GYMNAS'IIC APPARATUS.
Application filed August 20, 1921, Serial No. 493,987. Renewed June 16, 1924.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that we, IRA R. NELSON and FREDERICK WV LAMBIE, citizens of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gymnastic Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to gymnastic apparatuses for children and the main object is to provide a durable, practical and cheaply constructed device embodying a number of features adapted to be interchangeably and selectively used by the child using it. A
further object is to make" the device adjustablein such a manner that the child will by adjusting and interchanging the various parts develop his mind as well as his body. Still further objects will be disclosed in the course of the following specification and are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the device, showing it as arranged for holding a teetering board.
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the device, arranged for supporting a swing Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the device adjusted and arranged for the use of the parallel bars.
Fig. at is a modified detail of the upper end of the vertical frame.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 55 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail section on the line 66 in Fig. 5.
Fig. 7 is an enlarged detail section on the line 77 in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings by reference characters 8 designates a pair of transverse bars resting on the floor or ground and on which the device is mainly supported. Adjustably secured on the bars 8 is a pair of parallelly arranged side frames, each consisting of a long base bar 9, two upright members 10, supported in vertical position by angular braces 11 and 12, and a horizontal rail 13 secured on the tops of the members 10. The braces 11 are secured by bolts 14 at their lower ends to the extreme ends of the base bars 9, and extend far enough therebelow (see Figs. 1, 2 and 3) to rest on the ground, thus more firmly bracing the be moved to the holes 16 (see Fig. 2) so that the rails 13 can be secured in closer relative positions (see Fig. 3). In this event secured by bolts having wing nuts 21 to the side frames, when the latter are'in their outer positions, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Brackets 22, holding the members 19 and 20 together, are secured to the bar 20 by eye. bolts 23 in which are secured the upper ends ofa pair of chains 23. Each chain consists of an upper and a lowersection, being detachably connected by ahook 24c. lVhen so connected aseat 25 is provided at the lower ends of the chain, and the device is then in readiness for use as a swing? as shown in Fig. 2. hen so desired the lowersections of the chains 23 and the seat 25 are detached, leaving the upper chain section free to be secured, as shown in Fig. 4, to a pair of rings 26'. 'Two sets of cleats 27, having receiving slots 28 (see Fig. 6), are secured on the inner sides of the uprights 19. Around bar 28 is adapted to rest horizontally in either of said sets of cleats, and when in the lower position is adapted to support and act as a fulcrum for a teeter board 29, the latter having blocks 30 to prevent it from slipping. With the teeter board 29 and chains 23 entirely removed the bar 28 may be inserted, in the upper set of cleats, as suggested by dotted lines in Fig. 2, thus providing a rigid turning pole, on which anumber of gymnastic feats may be performed. A trapeze bar may also be provided by attaching a bar in the lower ends of the upper chain sections,
or by inserting it in the rings 26.
the bolts 17 of the moved side frame must 7 With the high frame'removed and the side frames closed in, as shown in Fig. 3, the device provides a set of parallel bars or rails 13, on which also a large number of exercises may be taken.
It will thus be obvious that a device of this construction will not only require but very little room, but will be portable and may be used either in a house or yard. Furthermore, its many adjustments and interchangeable features will enable a child to amuse himself for hours and at the same time provide exercises of almost any nature. 7
It is understood that suitable modifications may be made in the design and structure of this device, provided, however, that such modifications come Within the spirit and scope oi the appended claims- Having now therefore fully shown and described our invention What We claim; to be new and desire to protect by United States Letters Patent is:
1. An apparatus of the class described comprising, a pair of transverse base men-rbers, side frames, secured't'o saidbasemembers, said side frames having parallel bars at their upper ends averti'cal frame-secured to said side frameaand consisting of apair of uprights and a cross "beam "connecting their upper ends. V
2. An apparatus of the class described comprising, a pair of transverse base members, side frames, supported on "said base members, said side frames having parallel bars at their upper ends, angular braces adapted to-brace the side frames a ainst the base Vm'einb'ers, bolts securing said side frames and braces to the members, said base member's havingholes adapted to accommodate said bolts When the side frames are adjustedpati) various positions.
3. An apparatus'of the class described comprising, a pair of transverse base memjbers, side frames, secured to said base members, said side frames having parallel bars at their upper ends a vertical frame consistingofa pair of uprights connected at their upper ends by a crossbeam, said uprights being secured at their lower extremities to the lower ends of the side frames and at higher points to said parallel bars.
t. An apparatus of the class described comprising, transverse base members, side frames secured to the base members, said side frames consisting of uprights, parallel bars and lowerlongitudinal bars, and inclined bracing .members connecting said uprights With'SELl'd base members and longitudinal bars.
5. An apparatus of the class described "comprising, a pair of transverse base anemhejrs, side frames secured to the base 111611 here, said side "frames consisting of uprights. parallel bars and "lower longitudinal bars, inclined 'bracingurnembers connecting said uprights with said base-members and longitudinal bars. saidbr-acing members all restingwith theirlower ends onthe floor.
In testimony'whereof We aiiix our signa- 'tures.
