Be it known that I, GEQRGE WQRENZ, a citizen of the United States, residing in borough of Bronx, in the county of Bronx, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting Machines, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to typewriting machines equipped for typing successive forms printed in succession upon fan-fold webs, as set forth, for example, in the patent to Wernery and Smith, No. 1,132,055, dated March 16, 1915, or for use with loose superposed plies of work-web.' In Patent No. 1,358,033, granted to J. A. B. Smith, November 9, 1920, vthere is disclosed one of these fan-fold typewriting machines with equipment for using therein either one of two webs, the leading end of each web being attached to a platform or frame, and either of said frames being attaohable to the typewriter carriage, while the other frame with Vits attached web rests upon the desk ofthe typewriter.. Tn the foregoing machine, when it is desired to cease typing on one web and begin typing on the other, it is necessary to detach the frame that is in use, together with its web, and place the same upon the desk'or in a receptacle, and then pick up the other frame with its attached web and secure it to the carriage of the typewriting machine. One of theobjects of the present invention is to provideamachine in which Ythe change may be made from one fan-fold web. or set of plies to the other fan-fold web or set of plies with greater celerity and convenience, and an object is to avoid the awkwardness which is involved in detaching the frames from the Vmachine and depositing them upon the desk and: then re-attaching them. i According to the present improvements,
' both fan-fold webs or both (sets of superposed plies may be led part way into the machine, each web or set of plies forming a separate unit vor pack, and both units or packs may be attached separately to the carbon-carrier which is usually employed in these machines for the purpose of facilitatingythe relative shifting between the plies of work-web and the sheets of carbon. In other words, the carbon-carrier must havel its forward and backward movements that ordinarily accompanythe line-feeding rotation 'of the platen and therelative shifting 'movements of the carbons and work-web units, but during these forward and backward movements of the carbon-carrier' for the typing of one of the work sheet units, the other work-web unit is drawn forwardly and backwardly in idleness, being temporarily clipped to the carbon-carrier, and only'fone work-web unit at a time being fed around the platen to be typed upon. Accordingly, when the typing of one form upon one of the web units orfpacks is completed, and the carbons `forI said web are shifted, and the typed form 'is torn off, said web-unit may be withdrawn from the platen and clipped temporarily to the carbon-carrier, while the lotlier web-unit may be unclipped from the carbon-carrier` andpulled forwardly and passed down around the platenand up in front thereof for typing thereon; and, when the typing off-'a kform is completed, the carbons may be shifted back and the typed form-may be torn off, and
then the web unit or pack in question may be withdrawn from the platen and again clipped temporarily 'to the carbon-carrier. Then the first web unit or pack may be released from its temporary clip and drawn forward and passed Varound the platen to type another of` the forms thereon, andso on, the webs being used in alternation. Of course, each web may be kept in use as long as it is necessary in 'order to type a' succession of forms thereon before withdrawing it from ythe platen and advancingthe other web `into typing position. i

operating in conjunction with the pins 25, serve to lock the structure formed by the plates 14 and 19 and the posts 16 to the base 11 of the'carbon-carrier.
To facilitate the backward movement of the carbon-carrier when withdrawing the carbons from a typed section of the worksheet unit or pack, there is mounted on the lower plate 14 the hand-lever 28, which extends toward the front of the machine where it isV accessible to the operator. Mounted on the rear of the work-'frame 7 are the transverse shafts 29 and 30, provided with paper- guides 31 and 32.
yIn operation a work-sheet unit or pack 33, made up of a plurality of yworksheets 33a, isl threaded into the machine over transverse shaft 29, between the carbonblades 15, after which the leading edge is bent back, and brought to a position in front of the lower edge of the plate 14, where it is fastened by the paper-clamp 21. Another Work-sheet unit or pack 34, made up of a plurality of work-sheets 34a, is threaded in a similar manner into the machine over the transverse shaft 30, between the carbon-blades 20, and the leading edge is bent back in a similar manner and brought to a point in front of the plate 1 9, where it is fastened in place by the paperclainp 22. Assuming that memoranda of two different sorts are to be typed .on the forms ed upon the work-sheet units or packs, that the first memorandum is of the sort in'- tended for the forms printed on the worksheet yunit or pack 33, the leading edge of that pack is released from its paper-clamp 21 and brought forward in the usual manner, and inserted underneath and around the platen. Upon completing the typing Vef the first memorandum on the work-sheet unit or pack 83, it may be supposed that `the operator finds the second memorandum to be one that is to be typed upon the form printed on the work-sheets-of the work-web unit or pack 34. Accordingly, the operator withdraws the work-sheet unit or pack-33 from the platen, bends the leading edge toward the rear of the machine in order to get it out of the way, and clips it in' position upon the plate 14 by means of the paper-clamp 21. The operator then releases the leading edge of the work-sheet unit or pack 84 Vfrom the paper-clamp 22, straightens it out, draws it forward, and inserts it underneath and around the platen and brings it to the typing position.
The part played bv the feed-roll mechanism ofthe machine in this insertion and withdrawal of work-sheet units'or packs is, of course, the obvious onel of releasing the rolls when the work-sheet units or 'packs are being inserted or withdrawn, and of placing them in engagement with the Workimprovements may be used Without others.v
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a typeyvriting machine having aVV platen, in combination .with feed-roll mechanism to feed a plurality of superposed packs of Work-sheets interleaved Withycarbons successively or alternately around said platen, a carbon-carrier provided With a plurality of carbon-holding means, each of Which in turn is provided with a plurality of carbon-holding blades, said carbon-holding means being mounted one above another and so positioned as to permit some of said work-sheets or packs of Work-sheets to remain interleaved with their respective car.- bons and partially threaded into said machine While one Work-sheet or pack of Worksheets is being fedy through the machine to be typed upon.

In a typevvriting machine having a platen, in combination with feed-roll mechanism to feed a plurality of Work-sheets or packs of work-sheets interleaved With carbons successively or alternately aroundsaid platen, a carbon-carrier provided With aplurality of carbon-holding means, each of said carbon-holding means comprising a base fitted with a plurality of carbon-holding blades, said carbon-holding means being superimposed over one another in position to permit somel of ksaid Work-sheets or packs of Work-sheets to remain interleaved With their respective carbons and partially threaded int-o said machine While one Worksheet or pack of Work-sheets is being fed through the machine to be typed upon, each of said carbon-holding means being provided With sheet-holding meansk to retain said partially threaded work-sheets y or packs of Work-sheets in inoperative position While said other1 Work-sheet or pack of Work-sheets is being fed through the machine to be typed upon, said sheet-holding means each comprising a pivoted clamping member mounted on said base ina position to fasten Worksheet or pack of Work-sheets between it and said base. t
In a typewriting machine having a platen, in Vcombination With feed-roll mechanism to feed a plurality of Work-sheets or packs of Work-sheets interleaved Withcarbons successively or alternately around said platen, a carbon-carrier provided With aplurality of carbon-holding means, each of said. carbon-holding means comprising a base fitted vvith a plurality of carbon-holding blades, Vsaid carbon-holding kmeans being superimposed over one another in position to permit some of said Work-sheets'or packs of rWork-sheets to Vremain interleaved With their` respective carbons and partially threaded into said machine While one Worksheet or pack of Work-sheets is being fed through the machine to be typed upon, eachy of said carbon-holding means being provided With sheet-holding means'to vretain said partially threaded Work-sheets or packs of Work-sheets in inoperative position While said other Work-sheet or pack of Work-sheets is being fed through the machine to be typed upon, said sheet-holding means each comprising Va vpivoted clamping member fastened to 'said carbon-holding means, said` clamping 4member being provided With a finger-piece With which it may be operated, andan yupturned'edge to guide it over aV icc work-sheet or pack of work-sheets and thereby 'clamp it to said'base.

In" a typ'eyvriting machine, in combination, Aa platen, feed-rolls to guide a plurality of Work-sheets -or packs yof ivorkf'sheets successively or alternately underneath and around said platen, and a carbon-carrier to which are secured a plurality of carbonsphezets in superposed groups, each group containing afsuiiicientnumber of' carbonsheets to provideeach of said Work-sheetsY or" packs of Work-sheets vvith the correct number of carbonsheets, said groups of carbon-sheets being one above theother, and so positioned as to permit said Work-sheets or packs of Work-sheets yto be kept permanently interleaved With said'carbon-sheets, and'so thatone of said Work-sheets or packs of Work-sheets maybe fed'through said machine 'and' be typed upon without removing entirely the others of"said"yvorksheets oi' packs ofWork-sheets fromV said machine.

In a-typewriting machine, in combination, a platen, feed-rolls to guide a plurality of superposed packs of Work-sheets successively or alternately underneath and around said platen, and a carboncarrier comprising a base to Which are fastened a plurality of plates one above another and bearing carbon-holding blades to `which are lsecured carbon-sheetfs, each lof said plates containing a sufficient number of y'carloon-holding blades to provide each of said plurality'of superposed packs of Work-sheets With the correct number of'carbon-sheets, said plates'vvith their carbon-holdingblades beingso positioned as to permit said Work-sheets`or packs of VWork-sheets to be kept permanently interleaved `with said carbon-sheets, an'd'so that one of said work-sheets or 'packs of Work-sheetsv may be fed through said machine and be typed upon Without removing entirelythey others of said Work-sheets or packsof Work-sheets YfromA said machine.

V12. In a typewriting machine, a carboncarrier adapted to be moved forwardly and backwardly upon a work-presenting frame,
said carbon-carrier comprising a lower plate mounted directly upon said frame, and a middle plate secured to said lower plate by a plurality of studs and key-levers, andsup porting an upper plate by means of a -plurality of posts provided with reduced upper portions which lit into corresponding openings in said upper plate, said upper and middle plates each being provided with a plurality of carbon-holding blades between which may be inserted the work-sheets of two fan-folded webs or sets of plies in such a manner as to interleave, between said worksheets, carbon-sheets fastened to said carbonholding blades, each of said upper and mid dle plates being further provided with paper-clamping members so that the leading edge of one of the fan-folded Ywebs or sets of plies may be folded back and held in an inoperative position by its respective paperclamping member while the other of saidV fan-folded webs or sets of plies may be carried forwardV and threaded underneath and around the platen of said machine to a position to be typed upon, the inoperative fanfolded web or set of plies being carried forwardly and backwardly with said carboncarrier as the operative fan-folded Vweb or set of plies is being alternately stripped of its carbons or fed forward during the process of typing.

In a typewriting machine, a carboncarrier adapted to be moved forwardly and backwardly upon a work-presenting fra-me, said carbon-carrier comprising a lower plate mounted directly upon said fra-me, and a middle plate secured to said lower plate by a n plurality of studs and key-levers, and supporting an upper plate by means of a plurality of posts provided with reduced upper portions which fit into corresponding openings in said upper plate, said upper and middle plates each being provided with a plurality of carbon-holding blades between which may be inserted the work-sheets of two fan-folded webs or sets ofplies in such a manner as to interleave, between said worksheets, carbon-sheets fastened to said carbonholding blades, each of said upper and middle platesbeing further provided with paperclamping members so' that the leading edge of one of the fan-folded webs kor sets of plies may be folded back and held in an inoperative position by its respective paper-clamping member while the other of said fanfolded webs or sets of pliesinay be carried forward and lthreaded* underneath and Varound the platen of said machine to a posi- Vor ply supporting rods, fitted with paperguides, mounted on the rear of said workpresenting frame to keep the trailing ends of said fan-folded webs or sets of plies separate from one another and support them as they are being fed through said carbon-carrier.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a line-spacing revoluble platen, of a carrier in rear thereof, two sets of carbon-carrying blades, for carrying carbons interleaved between plies of workwebs, and a mount for each set, one mount being supported above the other upon said carrier, the lower work-web passing through the lower set of blades and beneath the upper mount.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a line-spacing revoluble platen, of a carrier in rear thereof, two sets of carbon-carrying blades, for carrying carbons interleaved between plies of workwebs, a mount for each set, one mount being supported above the otherY upon said carrier, the lower work-web passing through the lower set of blades and beneath the upper mount, said carrier being movable with the platen at the line-spacing operations, andv separate guides in rear of said carrier, one above the other, for leading the respective work-webs into the machine.

The combination with a line-spacing revoluble platen, of two independent sets of carbon-carrying blades in rear Vof said platen, and means for guiding work-webs into the machine to said carbon-carriers, through which they arethreaded preparatory to passing to the platen, each web with its carbon-carriers being usable while the n other web with its carbon-carriers are out of use, the web threaded .through one .of said carbon-carriers being below'the other set of carbon-carriers, and means being provided to stow in a position of disuse the leading .portion of either web with its carbons, preparatory to bringing into use the other web with its carbons. f '17.
