UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
JOHN THOMAS DAVIS, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HYDRANTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 150,296, dated April 28, 1874: application filed April 2, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN THOMAS DAVIS, of Washington city, in the District of Columbia, have invented a new and Improved Hydrant; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is aside elevation, and Fig. 2 a vertical section.
The invention is designed to provide novel means calculated to facilitate the operation and convenience of hydrants, while they are, also, effectually prevented from freezing in the severest temperature of the winter.
A represents a cylinder or chamber sunk in the well, and provided with a piston, B, whose rod 1) is connected with the hand-lever O. The latter is fulcrumed, preferably, on the top of the eductiontube D, having the discharge-spout or nozzle d. On this pipe is adjustably attached a guide-plate, E, held on the rod, at different elevations, by a clamp-screw, 0, while on the rod Z) is a fixed disk, F. 011 the rod 1), between the guide-plate E and disk 1 is located the spiral spring G. The latter, being stretched when the lever O is depressed and the piston 13 raised, will retract, and throw down the piston into place as soon as the exertion of force on the lever is remitted. II is a gravity-valve, having the subjacent slotted tube h and the upper head h, the latter working in a guide, I. As the piston rises, the valve is carried up until the slotted tube It re ceives, through the inlet side pipe J, a supply of water, which is then forced up through the educt-ion tube D, and discharged through spout or nozzle d. The chamber A is thus kept valways in a condition to receive the water that I claim as new is The combination, with valve H, of the leather or flexible ring K, secured about the head h, and serving as an auxiliary valve, at the time and in the manner specified.
