Be it known that I, HIRAM N. VIL'soN, a citizen oi? the United States, residing at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State 5 of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Tire Valves; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in l the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. ,n j l The present invention relates to safety-or j high pressure escape valves for pneumatic tires, and aims to provide a valve construction of novel and improvedformation and structure for attachment to the usual valve stem of a pneumatic tire, and adjustable yto permit of the escape of air above a predetermined pressure, should the pressurel of the air increase due to an increasepin temperature, or the like, thereby avoiding the excessive pressure on the tire casing and possible blow-outs. v Y
Another object is therprovision of such a device comprising a novel combination and arrangement of parts, and which is simple and inexpensive in construction, as well as practical and eliicient in use.
Vith the foregoing and other objects in view, which will be apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed, `it being understood that changes can bemade' within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated inthe accompanying drawing, wherein- Y Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the device ap- The device comprises a barrel or tubularl casing 7 having a threaded socket 8 at one 50 valve stem 10 of a pneumatic tire',',and said barrel or casing ha'sa threaded `socket 11 at its other end into which a bushing or plug 12 is threaded. The plug 12 has a longitudinal central bore 13 through which a rod plied to the valve stem, with the dust cap in end to screw onto the tip 9 of an ordinaryv jects into the socket is adapted to abut the valve member 16 within the stem 10, for pushing the usual valve open.
The barrel 7V has an inner cylindrical bore 1T between the reduced portion 15 and socket 11, with escape apertures or ports 18, and a yvalve member 19 of leather, rubber or other suitable compressible material is titted on ythe rod lawithin the bore 17,l to have anv air tight tit with said rod and the barrel,y and to slide within the barrel like a (piston. The valve member 19 is disposed between a pair of metalor similar washers 2O and 21, and
a stop pin 22 is carried bythe rod 14k for the contact of the `washer 21, to `limit the movement ol: the valve member` toward that endl oi" the rod 14 which `abuts against the valve ymember 16. A coiled expansion spring 23 surrounds the rod ,1a and is confined between the washer and plug 12, said plugV having a recess 24 receiving the spring and formingy a shoulder 25 against which the spring bears. The valve' member 19 and washers 20 and 21 are slidable on the rod 14, in the barrel 7, and said rod is also slidable through said valve member and washers when slid in the plug 12.
The outer end of the plug 12 has a diametrical groove or notch 27 to receive a T- head26 on the outer end of therod 24:, and cams 2 8 on which the head 26 can ride when said head and rodV are turned at an angle with the groove 27. The' cams 28. have notches 29 into which the head 26 can seat, when the head is turned to pull the rod 14 outwardly, as .seen in Fig. 3.
The plug 12 is adjusted within the barrel or casing 7 to apply the desired tension to the spring 23 to resist the outward movement of the valve member 19, which is located in-V wardly of the portsy 18 as seen in Fig. 2. VVli'en the barrel7 is threaded on the stem 10, the rod 111 will abut against and move the valve member 16, sov that the valve member in thel stem 10 is opened, for the ilow of air outwardly into the barrel against the valve member 19.vv The` spring 23 will riesilstothe outward movement of the valve member or piston 19 by the air pressure from within the tire, but when the pressure increases above a predetermined amount, for which the plug 12 has been adjusted, the valve member 19 is forced outwardly sui'iiciently so that the air can escape through the ports 18. The outward movement of the rod 14 is limited, by the dust cap 80, to prevent the valve mem ber 16 from closing when the valve member 19 is forced outwardly. Moreover, the valve member 19 reaches the ports 18, and permits the escape of air, before the rod 14 can move suiiiciently to permit the valve member 16 to close, the pin 22 contacting with the valve member 19 and preventing the rod 14 fiom moving further than the valve member 19. Consequently, although the valve meinber 19 can move outwardly for the escape of air through the ports 18, the same movement of the rod 14 will not enable the valve member 16 to close, even though the outward movement of the rod 14 is not limited by the cap 30. l/V hen the pressure is relieved, the spring 23 will return the valve member 19 to prevent further escape of air. This will avoid excessive pressure, and possible blowing-out of the tire. l/Vhen the air pressure is suiiiciently low, or when the plug 12 is removed from the barrel 7, the valve member 19 can seat against the pin or stop 17 under the tension of the spring 28, thereby preventing the separation of the parts 12, 14, 19
land 23. The dust cap 8O which is threaded on the stem 10 can be screwed into place to bring its outer closed end against the head 26 of the rod 14 to prevent the outward movement of said rod with the valve memt ber 19, which, 1f it occurred, would be apt to permit the valve member 16 in the stem 10 to close and prevent the escape of the eX- cessive pressure. When it is desired toi render the device inoperative, and to permit the valve member 16 to remain closed, the head 26 of the rod 14 is turned on the cams 28, thereby drawing the rod outwardly to `rod slidably mounted in said barrel for holding open a valve member in said stem, said barrel having an air escape port, a valve member in the barrel movable outwardly for the escape of air through said port, spring means for resisting the outward movement of the secondnamed valve member and for moving said secondnamed valve member in-y valve member, and means for holding said rod in outwardly retracted position when slid outwardly away from the iirstnamed valve member with the secondnamed valve member moved outwardly by said stop against said spring means.
2. A safety tire valve comprising abarrel for attachment to a barrel stem of a pneumatic tire, a plug adjustably connected to the outer end of said barrel, a rod slidable in said plug and movable inwardly for holding open a valve member in said stem, Vthe barrel having an air escape port, a valve member movable outwardly in the barrel to permit the escape of air through said port, spring means between said plug and secondnamed valve member to resist the outward movement of the secondnamed valve member and to move said valve member inwardly, and a stop carried by said rod for limiting the movement of the seeondnamed valve member away from the plug so that the spring means yielding moves said rod inwardly to open the firstnamed valve member, said rod and plug having cooperable portions to limit the inward movement of said rod and to hold said rod in outwardly retracted position when slid outwardly away from the firstnamed valve member with the secondnamed valve member moved outwardly by the stop against said spring means.
3. A safety tire valve comprising a barrel having means at one end for attachment to plug adjustably connected to the other end of the barrel, a rod extending slidably and rotatably through said plug for opening a valve member in said stem, a valve member slidable in the barrel on said rod to said port for the escape of air, a stop on the rod for limiting the movement of the lastnamed valve member away from the plug', spring means between the lastnamed valve member and plug for resisting the movement of said valve member to said port and foryieldingly moving said rod in the direction to open the `firstnamed valve member when t-he last named valve member engages said stop, the outer end of said rod'having a portion to bear against the outer end of said plug, and the outer end of the plug having a cam for the engagement of said portion of the rod when turned, to pull the rod outwardly and release the irstnamed valve member.
