Be it known that I, J OHN WAGNER, of Ottawa, in the county of Putnam and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hounds for Wagons, of which the following is a specification:

This invention relates to a combined front hound and pole for wagons, which are designed to be intimately connected with each other, to enable the same to be manufactured and sold together as a new article of trade. The invention consists in constructing the front hound of a wagon of a single piece of wood, which is steamed and bent into shape to form the sides and curved rear portion and the front futchells or bifurcated branches, be-

tween which the pole is secured permanently by bolts, clips, or other fastening devices, the rear extremity of the pole being connected to the CllITQCl rear portion of the hound by a 'tenon and mortise, the sides of the hounds, or

that portion forming the futchells, being reenforced by means of metallic facing bands or plates, the front ends of which project beyond the futchells onto the pole, to which they are secured, for forming a secure joint at the teimination of the former.

The letter A designates the front hound of a wagon, which is constructed of a single piece of wood, either oak, ash, or hickory, that is steamed preparatory to being bent to facilitate the operation of bending the hound into shape. The hound comprises the side bars a, the rear curved portion 1), and the futchells or bifurcated branches 0, between which the pole 13 is secured. The pole is of the ordinary form, and extends from the futchells to the curved rear portion of the hound, to which it is secured by a tenon and mortise, or in any other preferred manner.

The pole and hound are designed to be permanently or intimately connected with each other at the time of manufacture, so as to enable the same to be sold together as a new article of trade, which requires no subsequent organization in order to apply the same to a wagon.

In order to re enforce a wooden hound formed according to my invention, I propose to attach to the sides of the same metallic facingplates, 0, secured to the hound by means of rivets or screws, and made long enough to project at their front ends beyond the futchells onto the pole, to which they are secured. The object of extending the facing-plates, as described, is to produce a perfect or tight joint at the termination of the futchells, and to protect the ends of the latter, as will be obvious.

The means employed for securing the poles to the futchells or bifurcated branches of the hounds are left to the skill of the mechanic; but, generally, fasteningbolts are passed transversely through the same, and the ordinary clamp or yoke may also be employed to hold the parts together.

I am aware that the front hound has heretofore been constructed from a single piece of material bent into suitable form, to which is connected the tongue or draft-pole; such 1 do not broadly claim.

I claim as my invention 1. The pole B, combined with the bent hounds A, and connected at its extreme end with the curved portion 1), and with the futchells c by the facing-plate (J, in the manner shown and described.

2. The hounds re-enforced by facing-plates which extend beyond the futchells onto the pole, as and for the purpose set forth.
