Description
UNITED STATES DANIEL SULLIVAN, OF BANGOR, MAINE.
IMPROVEMENT m FEED-WATER HEATERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No;
March To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL SULLIVAN, of Bangor, in the county of Penobsoot and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in FeedWVa-ter Heater and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, that will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 shows a section of my invention; Fig. 2, a birds-eye view of the chamber.
My invention consists of an improved feedwater heater, for heating the water intended for use in steam-boilers, by means of the exhaust steam from the engine. It differs from those now in use, by being more economical in cost of construction and in the space required in proportion to the amount of heating-surface.
Reference to the drawing will explain my invention.
A shows a cylinder, having a supply-pipe, b, for the admission of the cold water, and an exit-pipe, 0, through which it passes to the boiler when heated. Within this cylinder is an exhaust-chamber, d, having a water-space, s, between it and the cylinder A, on all sides and at the top. This chamber is filled with water-tubes e, crossing each other at right angles, economising space, and'strengthening the chamber at the same time. The tubes are open at their ends, allowing the water to circulate through them, and are inclined from the horizontal to facilitate this circulation. The chamber cl is divided into four parts by vertical partitions f g hi crossing each other at right angles, and pierced to allow the tubes 0 to pass through. The partitions divide the the chamber into four parts, j 70 Z m, one part, j, connecting with the exhaust-pipenfrom the 150,265, dated April 28, 1874; application filed e, 1873.
engine, and the part at being provided with an escape-pipe, 0, through which the steam passes out after having been through the chamber (7. The partition f has an opening at the top connecting with the part 7c,- 9 an opening at the bottom into part 1; and h an opening at the top connecting with part an.
The operation is as follows: The water enters at b, and fills the water-space s and tubes 0. Steam is admitted at a, passing into the part j of the exhaust-chamber (1 among the tubes e and over the top of the partition finto the part It; thence under partition 9 into part I, and over the top of partition it into part m, from which it escapes through pipe 0, having been retained in the chamber by means of the partitions until its heat is thoroughly utilized. The tubes 6 are preferably inclined to assist the circulation of the water, and the cylinder A may be so constructed as to be readily removed from the bottom-plate p for the purpose of reaching the chamber cl or tubes e for cleaning or repairing.
to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a water-heater, the combination of the cylinder A with the water-space s and interior cylinder or chamber d, provided with inclined tubes 0 crossing each other at right angles, and divided into four parts by partitions f g h i, also crossing each other at right angles, said tubes and partitions serving to brace said interior or steam chamber, and both cylinders, A and d, being provided with feed and escape pipes, as herein shown, for the described purposes. X
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 1st day of March, 1873.
DANIEL SULLIVAN.
