HAFT'CCUPMNGS,
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. lbg, dated April 28, 1874; application filed October 4, 1873.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD G. Snonrr, of Carthage, in the county of Jefferson and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Clamping Device for Cylindrical Surfaces, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l represents a front view of my improved clam ping device, and Fig. 2 a vertical transverse section of the saine, on the line c e, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to produce an improved device for clamping cylindrical surfaces, so that a rigid connection of the saine is formed, and their lengthwise sliding also prevented.
This invention will irst be fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
A, in the drawing, represents the axle-shaft or other body with cylindrical surface, on which the pulley-wheel or other object is to be firmly clamped or keyed. The cylindrical body B is cast with an eccentric recess, a., by placing a curved wedge or cam, C, in a sand or composition mold7 pouring the metal in direct contact with its outer surface, and forming thus a seat for the wedge or cam to slide on along the circumference of the recessed part.
The curved wedge C is of eccentricallybored shape, of less length than recess a', and is provided with grooves b', iitting into corresponding ribs b, of body D, to prevent the sliding' of the same on the shaft in longitudinal direetion. A wedge'shail'ied key, D, is driven in at the broader end of recess a, and forces the ved ge or cam C around the axle or shaft A,
seeming a rigid connection of the parts in' EDWARD G. SHORTT.
