UNITED sTATEs GEORGE L. CHAMBERLAIN, 0E CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
ELECTRICAL coNNEcTioN.
Application led August 14, 1922. Serial No. 581,622.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, GEORGE L. CHAMBER- LATN, 'a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electrical Connections, of which the followin 1s a specification.
y invention relates to improvements in electrical connections especially adapted for use in conjunction with electrical transformers or similar electrical appliances and has for its object the provision of suitable electrical connections of this character by means of which said electrica-l appliance may be readily removed from an electric circuit and the circuit restored to operation.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanyi-ng drawings forming a part.of this specification, and in which,
Fig. 1, is a section of electrical connections embodying the invention shown as employed in combination .with a transformer, said section being taken substan- -tially on line 1-1 of E ig. 2,
' Fig. 2, is a section taken on line 2--2 of 1, and ig. 3, is an enlarged detail section showing the primary leads rto the transformer disconnected therefrom and connected with each other to restore the circuit after the removal of the transformer.
The preferred form of vconstruction as illustrated in the drawings, comprises a suitable box or casing 4`having a transformer 5 of usual construction: mounted therein in' the` usual manner. The transformer 5 is provided with any usual or desired form or arrangement of secondary leads ,or Wires 6. So much of the construction disclosed in the drawing isold and'well known and a usual one for the purpose, the present invention relating particularly to the primary connections for the transformer t0 be presently described.
The transformer 5 is also provided with the usual wires. 7 and 8 connected with the primary winding thereof in the usual fway. The wire 7 leads to and is electrically connected with a metallic socket mem-ber 9 mounted at, the inner, end of a tube 10 leading into the casi-ng 4 as shown. The tube 10 is provided with a tubular lining 10 of insulating material and the socket member 9 is arranged as shown at the inner end of the tube 10 to insulate the same from the casing 4. The corresponding primar lead 11 for supplying current to the trans ormer has the extreme end of its conductor formed into a split pin 12 adapted and arranged to be inserted in the socket member 9 and form a good electrical connection therewith. A suitable coupling 13 is provided for connecting the outer casing 11 of the lead 11 with the tube 10 as shown.
The other wire 8'leads to and is electrically connected with a split pin 14 arranged as shown at the inner end of the corresponding tube 15 having a lining 15 ofA insulating material. The other primary lead 16 is provided with a socket member 17 permanently secured to the extreme end 18 of the conductor thereof, the socket member 17 being' adapted and arranged to snugly fit either the pin 14 or the pin 12.
' A' suitable coupling` 13 is also arranged for this connection.- By this arrangement it will be observed that should the transformer" 5 get out of order or the removal therefrom the circuit be otherwise desired, the same may be readily disconnected from the leads 11 and 16 and said leads readily connected to each other as illustrated in Fig. 3 and whereby the transformer or other electrical appliance will be removed from ,the main or primary circuit and such circuit readily restored. After the connection is thus made between the leads 11 and 16 suitable insulation will usually be placed around the joint thus affected, although not necessarily so. The specific form .and arrangement of parts constitutes a simple and effective one for the purpose.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention .into effect, this is capable of variation and modilicationwithout departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what IV claim as new and desire -t secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with an electrical appliance, of complementary electrical connections for supplyin current thereto; and current leads provi ed with corresponding complementary connections engageable ethe'r with said appliance connections or with each other, said current leads being free to be connected either to said appliance or to each other, substantially as described.
2. rlhe combination with an electrical appliance, of complementary slip .joint electrical connections for supplying current thereto; and current'leads provided with corresponding complementary slip joint connections engagea le either with said a pliance connections or with each otherlsa1d current leads being free to be connected either to said appliance or to each other, subp stantially as described.
3. rlhe combination of a casing; an electrical appliance enclosed in said casing; complementary electrical connections mounted on said casing for supplying current tosaid electrical. appliance; and current leads provided with corresponding complementary. connections engageable either with said =casing connections or with each other, said current leads being free to be connected either to said appliance or to each other, substantially, as described.
4. The combination with a casing; an electrical appliance within said casing; tubes leading into said casing; complementary slip joint electrical connections mounted in said tubes and electrically connected with said appliance; and current leads provided with corresponding complementary slip joint connections engageable either with the connections in said tubes or Aname to this specification in the Lacasse with each other, substantially as described.
5. The combination of a casing; an` electrical appliance within said casing; two tubes leading into said casing; a socket mounted at the inner end of one of said tubes; a complementary pin mounted at the inner end of one of sald tubes; 'electrical connections between said socket and pin and said electrical appliance; and leads provided socket and pin to the primary winding of' said transformer; a lead insertable in one of said tubes and provided with a pin insertable in the socket therein; and another lead 'provided with a socket insertable in the other tube and engageable -with the pin therein orwith the pin on said other lead, p
substantially as described.
In testimony vshereof l have signed my presence of two 'subscribing witnesses.
