POISON APPLIER.

Application filed August 23, 1923. Serial No. 659,025.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FLETCHER GLADSTONE AsBILL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Ridge Springs, in the county of Saluda and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Poison Appliers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a poison applier especially adapted for use in applying poison to cotton on other growing crops for the purpose of checking or destroying boll weevil or other arasites or undesirable insects.

The objectof theinvention is to provide a poison applier of this character which is of extremely simple and inexpensive construction and which is well balanced and susceptible of ready and easy handling so as to facilitate the application of poison to the vegetation.

A further object is to provide a device of 7 this character embodying a container for the poison and a holder therefor of such a character that the holder may be readily associated with the container so as to properly support and mount the same in such manner as to permit of ready distribution of the poison contained therein, the holder being susceptible of ready and convenient handling and operating to place the container under the complete control of the person applying or distributing the poison.

Other objects and advantages of the invention reside in certain novel features of the construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the'accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, and in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing the preferred embodiment of the invention;

Figure 2 is a perspective view of the holder disengaged from the container or bottle; and

Figure 3 is a view in section on line 3-3 of Figure 1.

Referring to the drawings wherein for the sake of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 1O designates generally the container for the poison which is preferably in the form of a bottle having a neck 11 provided with a rim .12 around its open end. The

poison which is preferably in the form of a solution adapted to destroy or kill the undesirable insects is placed in the bottle,

and in orderto control the discharge of the solution from the bottle a cork or plug 13 is placed in the opening of the neck of the bottle and is formed with a V-shaped slot 14: in its periphery which extends from one end of the cork tothe other and which permits a limited quantity of the poison to flow from the interior of the bottle through the cork or plug 18 onto the vegetation or plants. Aholder is provided for the container 10, and preferably includes a U-shaped frame, designated generally at 15 which is constructed ofresilient meta l and is madeup of a'body portion 16and side bars 17 the g body portion and sidebars being constituted of fiat bars" of metal. When the holder is assembled with the bottle, the side bars 17 extend longitudinally of the bottle and engage the same at'the opposite sides thereof. Preferably the portions 17 of the side bars 17 whichengage the bottle'are transversely curved so as to snugly fit thereagainst. The ends of the bars 17 remote from the body portion 16 are bent inwardly,

as at 18 so as to extendacross the top of the bottle and beyond the inwardly bent portions 18 these bars 'areextended parallel to the-portions 17 as indicated at 19, the por- 5 tions 19 fitting againstthe neck of the bottle. The outer extremities of the side bars '17 are deflected outwardly,,asat 20 so as to engage under the rim 12 on the neck of the bottle. A block ofwood or other suitable" material21 is secured to the body portion 16 so as to provide a handle on the holder.

.A spider or supporting device for the base, designated generally at 25,'is provided and includes two strips, designated at 21 and 22. The strip 21 has lugs 23 at its ends which are secured, as at 24, to the side bars 17. The strip 22 is secured, as at 26, to the strip 21, and is arranged so as to extend at right angles to the strip 21. At its ends the strip 22 is provided with lugs 27.

As above indicated the frame 15 is constructed of resilient metal so that before the bottle is associated therewith the side bars 17 slightly diverge from each other toward their free ends. This arrangement admits of the ready insertion of the bottle, the base of the bottle being placed on the spider or frame 25 and the bottle being swung or tilted in position in between the tle.

At this point it is to be noted that the bars 17 engage the outer periphery of the bottle at diametrically opposite points. While the bars 17 are held in engagement with the outer periphery of the bottle a cord or binding wire 30 is wrapped around the portions 19 and around the neck 11 of the bottle so as to hold the portions 19 snugly against the neck and maintain the bars 17 snugly fitted against the outer periphery of the bottle, the outwardly deflected portions 20 being engaged under the rim of the neck. Obviously other clamping means may be employed in conjunction with the neck engaging portions 19 for securing the holder onto the bottle.

I claim:

1. In a poison applier, a container for the poison comprising a bottle and a holder for the bottle comprising a. U-shaped frame having a body portion and side bars, the

side bars extending longitudinally of the bottle and engaging the outer periphery thereof at diametrically opposite points means for clamping the side bars into engagement with the periphery of the bottle, a spider secured to the side bars and engageable with thebase of the bottle, the side bars of the frame extending beyond the base of the bottle and the body portion thereof connecting the side bars at a point spaced from the base of the bottle and from the spider, and a block carried by the body portion to provide a. handle.

2. In a poison applier, a container for the poison comprising a bottle and a holder for the bottle comprising a U-shaped frame having a body portion and side bars, the side bars extending longitudinally of the bottle and engaging the outer periphery thereof at diametrically opposite points,the side bars being transversely curved so as to snugly fit against the outer periphery of the bottle, means for clamping the side bars into engagement with the periphery of the bottle, a spider secured to the side bars and engageable with the base of the bottle, the side bars of the frame extending beyond the base of the bottle and the body portion thereof connecting the side bars at a point spaced from the base of the bottle and from the spider.

3. In a poison applier, a container for the poison comprising a bottle and a holder for the bottle comprising a U-shaped frame having a. body portion and side bars, the side bars extending longitudinally of the bottle and engaging the outer periphery thereof at diametrically opposite points, means for clamping the side bars into engagement with the periphery of the bottle, and a spider secured to the side bars and engageable with the base of the bottle, the side bars of the frame extending beyond the base of the bottle and the body portion thereof con necting the side bars at a point spaced from the base of the bottle and from the spider.

4. A bottle holder of the character described including a U-shaped frame having a body portion providing a handle and side bars engageable' with the bottle and having their ends bent to engage the top'and neck of the bottle, and a spider carried by the side bars :and including a strip secured'to the side bars and a strip extending atright angles to the first-mentioned strip and having lugs engageable with the outer periph cry of the bottle adjacent the base thereof.

5. In a poison applier, acontainer for the I poison comprising a bottle and a holder for the bottle comprising a frame having a body portion and side bars, the side bars extending longitudinally of the bottle and engaging the outer periphery thereof, means for securing the side bars in engagement with the periphery of the bottle and a supporting device carried by the frame and engaging the base of the bottle, the side bars of the frame extending beyond thebase of the bottle and beyond the supporting device, the body portion of the frame connecting theside bars at a point spaced from the base of the bottle and from the supporting device to provide a handle.
