Be it known that I, GHARLns-S. TOBIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Miami, in the county of Dads and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Phonographs,of which the following. is a specification.

My invention relates to phonographs or more: broadly talking-machines.

One object of my invention is the provision of a combined phonograph and lamp. Another objectis to provide a phonograph having an illumination signal which serves as an'indication that the recordis approach ingfthe end of its journey. It is also an obj ect of this-invention to provide means which simultaneously with the flashing of the illumination signal stops the movement; of the record. Still another object of my invention is the provision of a phonograph embodying the features above set forth and more fully detailed hereinafter, in an ornamental form simulating an animal, preferably a lion or elephant whereby an artistic article of furniture results.

My invention is illustrated in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation partially in section; Fig. 2 is a plan view and Fig. 3 is a detailed elevation of the mechanism in operative connection with the sound-reproducing means whereby as the record approaches the end of its journey, the proper contact is insured to flash the illuminantsignal and stop the record.

Referring to the drawing, 1 is the phonograph table provided with record-compartments 2 and 3. Mounted on the table 1 is a phonograph container 4 preferably simulating an animal. In the drawing the container simulates a lion but it is of course understood that it may assume other forms. The container 4 is provided with a door 5 hinged at 6 for easy access to the phono graph 7 which rests on angle irons 8 and 9. Suspended from container 4 is a bracket 10 held in place by a bolt 11 and carrying an illuminating signal 12 which illuminates the eyes 15 of the lion.

The phonograph? is provided with the usual actuating means and a record-holder 13, adapted to hold a record 14. The phonograph 7 is provided with a reproducer-arm 16 which has attached thereto a needleholder 17 carrying a sound reproducing needle 18. The vertical portion of the repro.ducer-armcarries a split circularrband 19 having extensions 20 .and 21 whereby the band by means of thumb screws 22 may be adjustable. Attached to the. band 19 is a movable contact-blade 23, the upper portion of which is covered by hard rubber 24. The contact-blade 23 is adaptechas the needle and the record approach the end of their journey to contact with the stationary contact-blade 25. When this occursthe illuminating signal 12 flashes indicating that the record is about to expire. As: the blade 23 contacts with the stationary contact-blade 25, thelever 2.6 pivoted at 27 isactuatedand throws the stop 29 carried by the arm 28 against the record. and automatically stops the same. Adjacent to the contact-blade- 3O whichis madeof hard rubber and. connectedto the arm 28 and post 28 isa spring Ill-which holds the stop in place. IvVhen the needl holder 16 is moved to start the phonograph again,-the lever 26 is released and the spring 31 draws the stop 29 away from the record 14. In addition to the automatic stop 29 the phonograph is provided with the usual stop lever 43, which permits the stopping of the record before the record is finished playing.

The wires 32 and 33 connected at one end with the signal 12 are in operative connection through battery 34 with the contactterminals of the contact-plate 30. By means of the switch 35, the signal 12 may be kept illuminated for a considerable period of time when the phonograph is not in use thereby acting as a lamp. The switch wire 36 taps wires 32 and 33. In order that the hollow. container 4 may be substantially hidden from view when the door 5 is opened, panels are provided. On one side of the phonograph 7 is a one-piece panel 37. On

the other side is a two-piece panel consisting of a lower member 38 and the upper member 39, the latter being hinged at 40. The upper panel member 39 is provided with panel knob 41. 42 is the panel stop.

The combined phonograph and lamp having the signal and stop arrangement set forth may be finished in any suitable color matching furniture suites thereby providing a phonograph which is very ornamental. It can be used as a dim-light projector in the parlor or music room during the night.

I claim:

1. In combination with a phonograph having a rotary platen and a swingingly mounted tone arm, means to simultaneously efli'ect braking of the platen and display of a light, said light constituting a signal and a platen illuminating means, and an element carried by the tone arm and swinging therewith to engage the first mentioned means and effect operation thereof.

2. In combination with a phonograph having a rotary platen and a swingingly mounted tone arm, a brake for said platen,

an open electric circuit including a signal lamp positioned to illuminate the platen when lit and a circuit closer engageable for closing movement by the brake upon application thereof, and an element carried by the tone arm and swinging therewith to engage and operate the brake and thereby effect simultaneous closing of the electric circuit to light the signal lamp and illumi- F nate the platen.

4:. In combination -with a phonograph having a rotary platen and a swingingly mounted tone arm, a brake for said platen having an arm extending therefrom constituting a movable circuit closing member, a pair of fixed circuit closer elements mounted in the path of the arm on the brake, a source of current supply and an electric lamp connected in series with the fixed circuit closer elements, said lamp constituting both a signal and a platen illuminating means, and an element carried by the tone arm and swinging therewith to engage and operate the brake and cause the arm on said brake to bridge the fixed circuit closer elements, the last mentioned element being adjustably mounted on the tone arm and arranged for fixing on said tone arm in adjusted position.
