To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, BAYARD E. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the village of Oak Park, in the 5 county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improve` ments in a Vehicle Door Lock; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and` exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, Vand to thenumerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
"In the assembling of automobile bodies the doors. have the door locks mounted y therein before the doors are completely iinished and' before the same are hung. With the types of door locks usually used the inner handles or lhandle rods rojectthrough and above the top edges ofp the doors and consequently are quite often bent or damagled before the doors are completely finis` ed and hung` in place. It is therefore necessary to.remove part of the door upso that the same may be removed to permit the damaged handle to be repaired or replaced.` This Yinvention relates to an' improved type of a vehicle door lock wherein the inner handle is adapted to be removably inserted into operative position within a door lock after the door locky is completely `assembled and mounted in place within a lace in avehicle body, thereby preventing ending 'or damage to the handle and making it unnecessary to remove a lock when once in lplace to replace the handle.

Still another object of the invention is to provide a vehicle door lock of sim lied construction and reduced cost, sai lock having ai removable inner handle or lever, said lock furthermore adapted to be looked or unlocked from both sides of the door to permit retraction of the latch bolt and its wedge member by the operation of either ,an outer handle or the removable inner handle.
It is an important object of this invention to provide a vehicle door lock ofsiin` -ple and effective construction wherein a latch bolt looking cam is held against accidental movement by a friction spring, and
wherein the handle or lever for retracting the latch, bolt is adapted to be inserted into the lock after the lock has been completely assembled and secured' in place within a completed vehicle door.
Other and further important objects of this. invention will be apparent fromthe disclosures in the specification and the accompanying drawings.
The invention (in a preferred form) is illustrated in the drawings .and hereinafter more fully described.

The reference numeral 1 indicates a vehicle doorprovided on the inner side with a lock receiving recess and with openingsor recesses 2 and 3 communicating. with said recess, as illustrated in Figure 2.`

The lock disclosed in Figures 1 to 8 inclusive, comprises a mounting plate or back plate 4 one end of which is bent at an angle to afford a fiange 5 havin screw openings 6 and a latch bolt opening t erein. Secured in a stud or boss 7 `formed on the mounting plate .4 is the inner end of`a heavy coiled spring 8 the outer end of which projects upwardly and engages against a lever or arm \9 pivoted on a pin l() integrally formed on one side of the inner end of a slidable bar 11.

The slidable movement of the slide bar 11 is limited by the lug 12 striking the casin 14 at the ends of the lguide slot 13. The s ide bar has integrally formed on the outer end thereof a beveled wedge l5 which isslidable through the opening in the flange 5. The wedge 15 is adapted by the inward movement of the slide bar 11 .to move in a channel strap or saddle 16 rigidly secured on the outer surface of the mounting plate 4 and to the inside of the liange 5.` Said strap 16 af# fordsl a gui-de lfor the latching members of the lock. The strap 16 projectsfrom the mounting plate outwardly through an opening 17 in the 'casing 14.
'The Wedge members -11-15`are cut away. at the sides thereof to afford shoulders-18', adapted to contact the inner endsof lthe 'latch bolt is force action of the main spring 8 the hooked endflanges 19 integrally formedfv'on opposite margins ofa slidable stamped metal latch bolt 20. Integrally formed on the inner end of the latch bolt 2Q is an upwardly directed arm 21 to the upper end of which is integrally connected two parallel arms 22 and 23. The arm 22 is uppermost and has the ends thereof bent toward the mounting plate 44 to form lugs or projections 24 and 25. The
arm23 isdeflected at 26 to permit the same vto forma guide member slidable in a longii tudinal slot 27 provided in the casing 14.
The inner end of the arm 23 is bent toward the mounting plate 4 to form a lu'g or flange- 28. As illustrated in Figure 3 the lupper end of the pivoted arm or lever 9 contacts the ing of the door 1 from the exterior of a ve hicle, an'outer door handle 30 is provided. The outer handle 30 has a stem secured thereon, the inner squared end of which projects into a squared openin one end of a cast or forged og or roll back 32 supported between the mounting plate 4 and the casing 14. The free end of the roll back 32 is in contact with the flange 24 of the 31 formed in upper arm 22 of the latch bolt, so that when l the outer handle 30 is turned theroll back 32 forcesthe latch bolt 20 inwardly together with the wedge l5 since ythe shoulders 18 of the wedge bar 11 are in contact with the latch bolt flanges 19.
To open the door l from the interior of a vehicle, an'inner handle or lever 33 is provided. The inner handle or lever`33 is removable and may be inserted into the lock` after the same isf secured in place in the door 1 or before mountingof the' lock, as desired.
The lever '33 is formed of a flat metal bar deflected or bent at 34 andhaving integrally formed onthe inner end thereof a hook 35. The other or outer end of the lever 33 has a threaded screw or shank 36 integrally formed' thereon to removably receive threaded thereon a hand hold o; knob 37. Rigidlyr secured to the lower .inner corner of the mounting plate 4 is a pin or headed stud 38 011y which th'e'hook 35of the lever 33 is adapt- A ed to be fremovabl engaged. The lever 33 may be easily removed operating the outer handle 30 or by pressing against the projecting end-of the latch bolt w en the door is open. The recess or opening 3 in the door 1 permits the hook 35 of the lever` 33 to be moved into and out of engagement with the stationary stud 38which serves as a pivot point about which the lever operates when operated to retract the latch bolt. When the removable lever 33 is in place it is in contact with the flange 28 of' the latch bolt arm 23, as illustrated vin Figure 3.
A locking device is Vprovided to permit the latch bolt 20 to be locked in its projected position to prevent opening of the door by actuation of either the door handle 30 or the lever 33-37. For this purpose a third handle or thumb knob 39 is provided on the inner side of the door lock. The thumb knob 39 is rigidly secured on the projecting end of a stem or shank 40 ontl1e inner e'nd of which is integrally formed a head 41 dis osed between the mounting' plate 4 and t e casing 14. Integrally formed on the periphery of the shank head 41 is a tooth or a radial projection 42 which is adapted to engage in a notch 43 provided in a dog or cam 44. The locking cam 44 is pivotallymounted adjacent the mounting plate 4 on a pin 45 secured to said mounting plate and projecting into an opening in the casing 14. @oiled around the pin 45 is a conical auxiliary spring 46 the base rend of which friction.

Figures 9 and 10 illustrate a modlfied Aform of roll back whichl may be used in place of the cast or forged roll back 32.- The improved rollback is of resilient or spring construction `made of a steel stamping, one end of which is narrower than the other', and is bent to form a head 49. The base or wider end of the steel stamping is curled to form a spring 50 the end of .which is adapted to engage in a slot provided 1n the inner squared end of an outer handle shank 51. The curled spring base 50 of the roll back has the ends thereof projecting 1nt0 openings inthe mounting plate and 1n the casing plate between which the roll back 1s mounted.
, ble in a longitudinal slot 77 In the modified form of door lock illustrated in Figures 11 to 14 inclusive, ther reference numeral 52 indicates a ,back or mounting plate, one end of which is bent at an angle to form a flange 53 having an openingptherein to permit the latching members to project therethrough. Secured in a slotted stud 54 on the mounting plate 52 is the inner end of a coiled main spring 55 the outer end of which projects upwardly and is engaged against a lever or arm 56. The arm 56 is of stamped metal. metal arm is bent over on itself to form a head 57. The opposite end of the arm 56 is wider than the head end and is provided with a notch 58. The notched or bifurcated end of the arm 56 is engaged on apin or lug 59 struck from ametal stamping or slidable plate 60. Integrally formed on the inner end of the slidable plate 6() is a tongue which is bent to lie ilat against. the plate 60 to afford a guide block or lug 61 which projects' into and is slidable ina longitudinal guide slot 62 formed in a cover or casing 63. The casing 63 is secured to the mounting plate 52 to enclose the operating mechanismsof the lock. The casing 63 is provided with flanges or walls 64, 65 and 66 which bear against the mounting plate 52. The inward movement of the slide plate 60 is limited by the lug 61 striking the casing at the end of the gulde slot 62. The end of the stamped metal slide plate 60 is curved upwardly and'bent rearwardly vand downwardly to afford a resilient or spring wedge 67. The wedge 67 is slidable in the opening in the flange 53 and is furthermore adapted to move through a channel strapjor saddle 68 secured on the formed on the opposite margins of a stamped metal latch bolt 71'. Inte rally formed on the inner end of the latch olt 71 is an upwardly directed arm 72 to the upper end of which vis integrally connected two parallel arms 73 and 74. The arm 73 is uppermost 'and has-the ends thereof bent toward the mounting plate 52 to aord lugs or flanges 75 'and 7 6'. The arm 74 is deflected to permit the same to form a guide member slidarovided in the casing 63. The inner end oi) the arm 74 is bent to form a lug or flange 78. As illustrated in Figure 112 the head end 57 of the arm 56 contacts the flange 76 of the upper arm 73 to hold thelatchbolt inproyjected position. Y i

` For opening a vehicle door from the interior of the vehicle, an inner handle or lever 82 is provided. The lever 82 is ,removable and may be inserted into theI lock either'before or after the same has been mounted in place on a vehicle door. The lever 82 is formed of a curved flat metal bar, the inner end of which is provided with a notch 83 or is hook shaped to permit the lever` to be Aremovably engaged on a pin or ated to engage against a corner headed stud 84. The stud-84 is rigidly se cured on the lower inner corneiof the mounting plate 52. To hold the notched inner end engaged on the stud 84 a plate spring 85 is secured at one end to the .inner surface of the casing flange 65 while the free end of the spring engages against the curved edge of the lever 82. The upper or outer portion of the lever 82 is twisted at 86 and bent to afford a U-shaped head 87 having thread apertures therein. Removably threaded through the apertures of the lever head 87 is the threaded shank 88 on the outer end of'which a handle or hand hold is secured.
AA locking device is provided to permit the latch bolt 71 to be locked inv its pro jected position to prevent opening of the door by actuation of either the outer handle or the lever 82. A notched cam 89 is pivotally mounted on a pin 90 secured to the mounting plate 52. `The locking cam is adapted to be actuated by a tooth 91 formed on a shank 92. The shank '92 projects through the mounting plate 52 and is adaptedto be operated from the interior of a vehicle by a thumb knob similar to the construction shown in'Figure v5. `The cam 89 is notched to permit the 'same when operlatch bolt 71. j

I In the modified formof the door lock illustratedin Figures 11 to 14, the operation of the lock is substantially the same as that hereinbefore described. In this case however the arm 56, the roll back 80-81, and the wedgev are made of stamped metal instead of cast or forged metal thereby pro-v yvidinga vehicle'door lock of less expensive construction. The lever 82 may be inserted into the lock after the lock is mounted in place with a vehicle door. The lever is insorted intothe lock between the mounting Y latch bolt plate 52 and the latch bolt arm 7.4. The

outer side of the door by operating the outer handle not shown but provided on the outer f end of the handle shaft 79. 'Ihe notch 83 'of the lever 82 is engaged on the stud 84 and the spring 85 acts to hold the notched inner end of the lever in contact with said pivot stud 84. When the la-tch bolt is released the spring 5 5 acts to project the latchlbolt and move the latch bolt Bange 78 intol contact with the lever. The handle on the upper end of the shanky 8 8 facilitates operation of the lever from the inner side of the door. The spring construction of the lever head 87 locks the lower end of the shank 88 in an adjusted position with respect to the lever.
By producing the majority of the operating parts of the door lock of steel stampings instead of cast or-forged metal, a lock of compact Aand inexpensive construction is provided.
`The novel arrangement whereby the inner handle or lever of the lock Vmay be inserted into the lock either before or after mounting of thesame in a vehicle door permits one type of lock to be used in prac tically any style of open or closed vehicle body constructions. The lever or inner hanlock is installed. Attention is directed to the fact that the inner'handle or klever may ybe'removed oriinserted into the lock'when the same is unmounted or when the same is mounted in a door and completely covered by upholstering. The removing of the upholstering to uncover thel lock is not necessary when a lever is to be mounted in place.
I am aware that numerous details 0f conf struction may be varied through a widey range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not (patent granted, otherpurpose limiting the wise than necessitate by the prior art.
I claim as my invention: e
1. A vehicle door lock comprisinga latch bolt, a wedge member, an arm pivotally mounted on saidl wedge member and engaging said latch bolt, a spring engaging said arm for'impelling said latch bolt and said wedge member outwardly into latching position, a handle for retracting the latch bolt andwedge member againstl the action of said spring, and a lever adapted to be removably inserted into said lock when the latch bolt is 'retracted to afford a means for operating the latch bolt and said wedge independently of said handle. l
` 2.'A door lock comprising a latch bolt, a wedge thereon having relative movement therewith, an arm pivoted on said wedge v'and contacting said latch bolt, a spring engaging said arm for 'impelling said latch bolt and said wedge outwardly vinto latching position, and a ylever adapted to be removably projected into said lock to engage said latch bolt to permit retraction ofthe latch bolt'and ,said` wedge when the lever is operated. y
3; A door lock comprising a casing, a latch bolt therein, a wedge vco-acting with said latch bolt, an arm pivoted on said wedge, a spring contacting saidi arm for projectin the latch bolt and said wed 'e into lato ing position, a roll back in said casing contacting saidlatch bolt, a handle for operating the roll back to cause retraction of the latch bolt and said wedge from one side of the door, a stud in said lock, and a lever ladapted to be projected into said lock to removably engage said stud, said lever adapted tobe operated from the other side of the door to permit retraction ofthe latch bolt 4andV said Wedge independently of said handle.
4. A door lock comprising a latch bolt, a wedge associated therewith, an arm pivoted on said wedge and engaging said bolt, means contacting said arm for impelling the latch bolt and then the wedgeoutwardly into latching position, handles operable independently of each other for redle may be threaded and bent to form vto suit the particular type of door on which thev tracting the latchv bolt and the wedge from opposite sides of the door against the resistance of said means, and a locking mechanism in said lock adapted to lbe actiiated tion with a movable bolt,l means for pro.-
jecting said bolt into latching position, a resilient mechanism for retracting the 'bolt from one side of the door, and a handle adapted to be removably projected into the lock into an operating position engaged with said bolt to permit retraction of the bolt from the other side of the door independently of said resilient mechanism.
6. A -lock comprising a stamped slidable latch, a stamped metal wedge slidably engaged therewith, a stamped metal arm pivoted on said wedge and contacting said latch, a spring en aging said arm to hold the bolt and sai wedge projected into latching position, a spring'supported metal roll back in said lock contacting said latch, a handle forl operating the roll back to cause retraction of the latch and said wedge, and a lever adapted to be removably projected into. said lock tol engage said latch to permit retraction ofthe latch and saidv wedge independently of the operation of said roll back and handle.
7. A lock comprising a stamped metal latch bolt, a stamped metal wedge slidablj7 enga ed therewit means for operating Asaid olt andl wedge so that they will have a' relative movement with respect to one another, and a roll back in said lock oom- Yprising a resilient portion andan integral head for retracting the bolt and'wedge.
8. A lock comprising "a stamped metal latch bolt, a stamped metal wedge associated therewith, means for holding said bolt and wedge in projected latching position, a stamped metal roll back in said lock comprising a coil spring1 integral head, and a han e connected with portion and an'y said roll backspring portion, said handle adapted to-be operated to operate said roll back to cause retraction of said bolt and wedge.
9. A lock comprising a stamped metal latch bolt, a stamped-metal wed e slidable thereon, a projection struck 5 rom said metal latch. bolt, a stamped metal wedge slidable thereon, a stamped metal arm pivoted on said wedge and contacting said latch bolt, a spring `contacting said arm v for holding said latch bolt and wedge inl projected latching position, a stamped metal roll back in said lock comprising a coiled spring base and a head integral therewith and contacting said latch bolt, a handleV connected with said roll back spring base adapted to be operated to cause re traction of the latch bolt and said wedge, and a lever removably engaged in said lock and contacting said latch bolt, said lever adapted to be operated to cause retraction of the latch bolt and said wedge independently of said handle. a
