Application inea' February s, i923. semi no. eiesc.
To all whom it may coment.
Be it known that I, CLARENCE D. Pm'ri, a
i citizen of the United States of America, and
-residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in InelosedElectric. Switches,- of which the following is a specification.
The main object is to provide a, simple,
practical construction in which vprotected fusesmay be readily installed or replacedinfaperfectl safe manner.
'Another o ject is 'to so construct such a* devicethat it may be readily assembled and wired. u o
Another object .is to'provide vparticularly simplejmeans for preventing access to the live parts of the switch even when the fuse lug sockets are exposed.
Another object is to provide simple and' practicalmeans for interloc '-'Ung a 'movable part-offtheswitch with a sli ing cover.. The accompanying .two :sheets of drawings show one form of construction embodying improvements' of my invention.
re 1 is`a plan view of a construction einbodyi'ng'improvements of my invention,
the interior parts being shown dotted. '0
Fia. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view showing the 'switch in the closed circuit posi- -'tion' an the cover slideclosed.
Fig. 3 is a similar sectionalview showing the switch in the open circuit position and the cover slide open.
Fig. i is a transverse sectional view.
Fi 5 isa peispective view of the slide and interlocking part.
Thebox or receptacle may be of any suitable form having a body 7 and a cover 8 which will 'usually have a hinge connection such as 9 and some form of catch or loclf` to hold the cover closed.
The switch proper is carried by a base 10 formed of insulating material. l rIhe stationary posts 11 suitably secured to the base su port the swinging blades 12, the movable ends of which are adapted to engage the clips 13. The circuit terminals 14 are secured to the clips 13. The opposite end of the base 15,is preferably much higher and providedfwith recesses for' the fuse lug sockets of any suitable form. In the orm shown these sockets Vhave threaded shells 16 connected by strips'l which extend through 'the base and are provided with circuit t'eri .minals 18. The-central socket contacts 19 connected by an insulating cross-bar 2.1 and.
adapted to be operated by the crank member 22 pivoted in the body of the .box and hailing an external handle 23. The cross-bar may be connected to the Aoperating member v22, iq any suitable .manner 4for instance by means of a bracket or 'arm 24.
' The base is provided with an insulating;
The base is somewhat narrower than th box so that channels 26 arefleft at' the sidesthrough which'eonductors may be ledto the circuit terminals-18 if desired.
A cover is providedwithan opening 27 topermit access to the fuse plu sockets. .This openi is normally closed y the slide '28 which 1s suitably guided in the cover,'. for i instance by means of a flanged member 29.
which forms in conjunction with the cover a' guideway or groove. The slide may beprovided with an operating knob or hi'inilley()y .1
for convenience, When the slide is"open .as shown in Fig. 3, access may be had tbtthe fuse plug soc ets for inserting. examining, or removing the fuse plugs. 1t will be noted, however, that the wall 25 entirely prevents access to the switch proper or the'circuit terminals. v Y
In order to prevent the slide from being opened when t e switch is in the closed circuit position, I have provided a member 31 which lis secured to the slide and has a hooklike member 32 which normally engages'the operating member 22 as shown in Figure 2. It will be seen from this iigure that with the switch inthe closed circuit position the hook 32 engaging the operating member 22 prevents the slide from being moved-lathe right. The member 31, however, is cutaway at 33 so as topermit the operating member to be swung to the left as shown in Fig. 2 for the purpose. of opening the switch. When the switch has been opened in the position shown in Fig. 3, the slide maybe pushed to the right so as to permit access to the fuse plug sockets through the opening 27. The member 31 is edge or shoulder 34 whic when the parts are in the position of Fig. 3 stands in the rovided with an lll) wa of the operating -member 22 and thusA mounted in 4said box including -fuse plu Opening a;
sockets accessiblethro'gh Said openin an movable blades in the other end of sai box,
an o rating member 'for said lblades and an i inter ocking bar carried by said shutter-havmg a hook engaging said operating Vmember to prevent the o ration of said shutter except the switch 1s fully open and having aV portion vfor engagingsaid member to prevent movement of said operating member except said shutter isclosed. y
2. In fan-inclosed switch, abox body and ycoverhavingvan o ning, a shutter for said movab e switch member in said box, an' operatin member therefor, a bar carriedby said s utter having'a hook engagin'g said operating member, said bar being constructed to permit the vmovement of sald operating member when. said shutter is closed, to permit movement of said shutter whenthe. switch is open, and to'prevent closing movement of the switch when the shutter member is open.
3. In an inclosed switch, a box body and cover, said cover'having an openm an insulating base mounted in said box bo y, a movable switch member mounted on one end of,

In an'inclosed switch, a box body, a cover therefor having an opening, an in- -'sulating block mounted in said body, a movable switch member carried by one end of said block, circuit terminalsmounted on 'said end of said block, fuse lug sockets in the op osite end of said bloc a projecting insulatmg wall carried by said block between 'said' fuse plug sockets and said .movable switch member, and circuit terminals car-A ried by said block between said movable switch member -and said wall;
f 5. As an article of manufacture, an ins'ulatin switch block, circuit terminals and switc clips mounted on one end of said block, fuse plug sockets mounted in the opi-v' posite end of said block, hinged switch members connected to said block between said fuse plug sockets and said clips, circuit terminals carried by 'said block between said hinged switch membe'1 s and said `fuse plug sockets and connected to the latter, means of connection between 'said fuse plug sockets and said hin ed switch members, and an insulatng wal projecting, fromA said block between said last mentioned circuit terminals and said fuse plug sockets.
6. In an inclosed switch,'a box having an opening, a shutter for said opening, a switch mounted in said box including fuse plu -sockets accessiblethrough-said openin an movable blades in the other end of sai box, an operating member for said blades, an insulating barrier between said blades,and
sockets and an interlocking member carried by said shutter having a hook engaging said operating member to prevent-theoperation of said shutter when the and having a portion for engagln 'said switchis closed I memberptoprevent movement otflsai -operf ating member -when said shutters open.
7. In an inclosed switch, a box .body 'andcover, said cover havingan openm an in- `.su1ating blockmounted in ysaid box body, a I
movable switch member and circuit termi-l nals mounted on-one end of said block, fuse contacts mounted'in the other end ofsaidy block in line with said opening and connectedrespectively to said movable switch u member and to one of said terminals, saidv block having an integral projecting wall located between said fuse contacts and said circuit terminals. 8. As an article of manufacture, an insulating switch block h i the other, circuit terminals and switch clips mounted on' the lower'end of said block, fusegher at .one end, than.
