Be it known that 1, CHARLES S. BARON, residing at Tiflin, in the county of Seneca and State of Ohio, a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in' Jars for Sugar and the like, of which the following is a speci fication.
My invention relates to jars or holders for sugar and other comminuted or powdered food material, my object being to provide such an article with an automatically opened and closed discharge opening, which among other characteristics will consist of the smallest number of parts, will be reliable and efiicient in operation, and which, when the material is to be discharged or shaken from the jar outlet, will offer practically no obstruction to the outflow of material. My invention, accordingly, consists in the jar or holder having the construction described by or included within the scope or meaning of the appended claims.

The embodiment of my invention shown in the drawings comprises a jar, 10, of glass with a removable screw cap or cover, 11, of sheet metal which in an eccentric position and well to one side or edge has a discharge or pouring hole, 12, which on the exterior has a struck-up or out-turned rim or flange, 13, which forms a seat for a closing stopper 01' plug, 14, preferably of conical form, the large end oi the cone being. greater in diameter than the pouring hole,
and being on the outside of the top or cover, 11. The plug or stopper is attached to an arm, 15, of wire which in side view is substantially L-shape, such arm at its end remote from the plug being pivoted to the underside of the jar cap or cover at a substantial distance from the plug so that the plug will automatically swing to and from its seat in the pouring hole dependent on whether the jar is upright, as seen in Fig.

It will be seen that by reason of the location of the plug pivot, the plug, when the jar is in an inverted position for pouring, will gravitate away from the pouring hole and to a substantial distance away from the path of material flowing out therefrom so that not only will the flow of material not be obstructed, but the flowing material will not strike upon the plug "and be splashed or scattered about. The angle of the plug-carrying arm during pouring will lie snug against the side of the pouring hole and thus the arm will obstructthe pouring hole to a minimum. The pivotal connection between the plug-carrying arm and the jar cover is shown as a clip, 16, of sheet metal suitably attached to the jar cover by soldering or, as shown, by a rivet, 17, the wire arm being suitably bent to engage the eye of the clip, but, of course, the precise manner of pivotally connecting the arm to the cover is a matter in respect of which changes may be made without departure from my invention.
It will be seen that I do not require any extra part to supply the necessary weight to efieot the gravity movement of the plug, but the plug itself furnishes all the necessary weight.
When the jar is placed in an upright position the pouring opening is automatically closed without any thought 0r.ca-re on the part of the user and it is tightly closed so as to sanitarily protect the jar contents; and, of course, the opening of the pouring hole is likewise eflected without any attention or care on the part of the user when the is inverted for pouring or shaking out its contents. The weightofthe stopper is sufficient, due to its taper-ing form, upon its closing movement to dislodge and knock into the jar any particles of material that might tend to collect around the pouring opening and thus the device automatically will keep the pouring hole in-an open, clean, condition.
What I claim is:
1. An article of the class described having a pouring hole in its top, a stopper for. such hole located on the exterior of the top, and means pivotally supporting the stopper from within the cap and playing through the hole, the stopper and the portion of such means playing through the hole being in a position to one side of the hole when the hole being in a position to one side of the stopper uncovers the hole, the stopper itself hole when the stopper uncovers the hole,
