To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN TAMBERLIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented cert-ain Improvements in Inlaid- Linoleum Machinery, of which the following isa specification.
This invention relates to means for punching shapes from sheeted material and transferring spa-idv shapes to their desired position upon a backing fabric.
. The invention comprises means for punching sheets andV transferring the punched shapes to-y position for placing them in the design on a backing, vincluding -mechanism for lowering the templet or die plate with the shapes therein. upon the backing, pressing .the shapes from the templet upon the backing and raising the templet toeflect the desired clearance for permitting its withdrawal to its-initialposition to repeat the operations? The characteristic features of the invention are set out inthe following description and the accompanying `drawings in illustration thereof.

In the machine illustrated, the frame 1, ways 2, head 3 and bed 4 are fixed together and stationary. 40 A frame 5. provided with the rackbars 6,

A block 9, providedwith dies 10 with which the .templet .apertures are adapted to -register, carries a stripperplate 11 supported by springsj 12. and is .carried by rollers 13 which ride on cams 14. TheseA cams are fixed OnjOurnalled shafts 15 on which are secured meshing gears 16 Vthrough which the shafts with thecams .thereon are revolved and the reciprocation of the block 9 effected.

roller 18 and the plate 11, (in the lowered position of the block 9) by the link belts 19 passing over wheels 20, 21 and 22`and by grippers 23 and 24 connected to the link belts, in the operation of carrying the shapes in the templet 7 from the receiving position above the block 9 to the depositing position above the bed or table 4 having the pin band 25 and the backing fabric 25 thereon.
The frame 5 is reciprocated in synchronous relation with the reciprocation of the block 9 by the gear'wheels 26 which mesh with the racks 6. The wheels 26 are fixed on a revoluble shaft 27 which carries a gear wheel 28 that is rotated back and forth by an oscillatory gear segment 29, the latter being journalled by means of the bearing 30 and counterbalanced by the weight 31. rlhis segment is oscillated by a link 32 having one end pivotally connected therewith and the other end pivotally connected to a lever 33 which .is provided with the fulcrum 34 on the frame. The lever 33 is rocked by a link 34 having one end pivotallyconnected therewith and the other end pivotally connected with a lever 35 provided with the fulcrum 36. The counter-weight 37 ou one endof this lever holds the roller 38 on the other end thereof in contact with a 'cam 39 fixed to one of the shafts 15.
The belts 19 are driven by a sprocket wheel 40 fixed to the shaft 41, which carries wheels meshing with the wheels 26, and by the sprocket chain 42 fpassingover this wheel and a sprocket wheel 43f1xed to the wheel 21.
rThe frame 5 carries, parallel to the respective racks 6, the slidable cam bars 46 containing the slots 47Y through which the hangers or bolts 8 pass and the superposed cam bars 48 to which the bolts are connected adjustably by their nuts 8,the wedge cams 46 of the bars 46 having the wedge cams 48 of the bars 48 resting thereon while reciprocating the templet horizontally between the punching and depositing positions. y
Crank levers49, fulcrumed `on the bearings 50 carried, by lthe frame 5, 'have their downwardly extending arms 49 vpivoted to los bearings 50 and act to hold the cams 46 under the cams 48.
A reciprocating head 52, above the table 4, is provided with arms 58 having pins 53a extending laterally therefrom inV positions for being entered in the cams 49a on the forward movement of the frame 5 and for rocking the levers 49 against the 'action of the springs 51 upon the descent of the head 52. rllhis movement of the crank levers 49 shifts the bars 46 to disengage the' cams 46 thereon from the cams 48 and permit the bars 48 to descend smoothly as the inclined surfaces of the cams separate.
The templet 7 is, by the descent of the bars 48, lowered upon the burlap 25 and the shapes 17 carried therein are pressed therefrom upon the burlap by the registering dies 52` carried by the descending head 52.
The movements of the head 52 with the dies 52 thereon and the registration of the templet 7 with the dies are effected as follows:
Bars 53,1novable in vertical guides 54, connect the head 52 with a cross beam 55 which is moved vertically by a link 56 connected therewith and with a crank lever 57. This crank lever is rocked by a link 58 which connects it with a rock arm 59 journalled by means of a shaft 60. The arm 59 has fixed thereto an arm 61 provided with a roller 62adapted to make contact with a kcam 63 and an arm 64 provided with a roller 65 adapted to make contact with the cam 66,the cams being fixed on a journalled shaft 67.
Weights 68, depending from cords 69 connected with the cross bar 55 and passing over the sheaves 70, hold the head 52 elevated normally, when the roller 62 is held in engagement with the cam 68 by the intermediate mechanism described. When, however, the Vhigh point of the cam 68 strikes this roller 62, the arm 59 is actuated and acts through the intermediate mechanism to depress the head 52 and cause the dies 52 to forcey the shapes from the templet 7 and upon the backing 25. Thereupon, the head 52 is elevated to withdraw the dies 52A fromthe templet 7, by the action of the weights 68, supplemented by a quick action due to the engagement of the high point of the cam 66 with the roller 65 which has been thrown into the path of such point.
Tapered pins 71, movable vertically in the bearing 72, are adapted to pass through apertures 7 of the templet 7 to register and hold the same in position with respect to the `dies 52. These pins are reciprocated vertically by the crank levers 73 which are rocked by a rod 74 for this purpose. The rod 74 is operated by a lever 75 connectedtherewith and provided with a roller 76 which engages a cam 77 on the shaft 67,l
whereby the operations of the pins and of the die are synchronized.
In the operation of the machine, the sheeted linoleum composition is drawn by the grippers 23 and 24 over the stripper plate 11 carried by the die block 9, and the elevation of suoli block cuts from the Sheet material tesserae of desired form which are forced into apertures of similar contour` in the template 7. The frame 5 carrying the tesserae filled template is then moved along the tracks 2 into position above the backing fabric 25 on the pin band 25, the template being held clear of the backing fabric during this movement by the engagement of the wedges 46 under the wedges 48. The template is accurately positioned above the backing fabric by the engagement of the tapered pins 71 in the apertures 7. The head 52 is depressed to rock the lever 49 and disengage the wedge 46 from the wedge 48', which permits the template 7 to descend into engagement with the backing fabric 25. The further downward movement of the head 52 causes the dies 52 carried thereby to press the tesserae from the template upon the backing fabric. The rise of the head 52 permits the spring 51 to shift the slide 46 and elevate the template, which is then translated by the frame 5 back into position above the die block 9 and plate 11 over which a fresh sheet of linoleum has meanwhile been drawn by the grippers 23 and 24.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. In an inlaid linoleoum machine, the combination with sheet punching 'mechanism comprising a templet and cooperating dies; shape setting mechanism comprising a bed adapted for supporting a backing fabric and devices adapted for forcing shapes from said templet against said fabric, and mechanism for reciprocating said templet between positions in which it registers with said dies and devices respectively, of means for raising said templet relative-ly to said bed.
2. In a machine for making inlaid linoleum, the combination with a bed adapted for holding a backing fabric, and a templet adapted for positioning shapes upon said fabric, of means for moving said templet to and from said fabric, said means comprising a vertically movabledevice by which said templet is supported, a horizontally movable device by which said vertically movable device is raised and lowered, and automatically operating mechanism for shifting said horizontally movable device.
3. In a machine for making inlaid linoleum, the combination with a stationary bed adapted for holding a backing fabric, a templet for positioning shapes upon said fabric, and templet supporting means comprising a carriage and hangers movable relatively thereto, of mechanism for raising and lowering said templet, said mechanism comprising cams connected with said hangers, a slide provided with cams adapted for engaging said cams first named, a reciprocating head having means for forcing shapes from said templet upon said fabric and means whereby said head moves said slide.

In a machine for making inlaid linoleum, the combination with a bed adapted for holding a backing fabric, a templet for carrying shapes to and positioning them upon said fabric, a reciprocating carriage, templet supporting means comprising a vertically movable device and hangers depending therefrom for supporting said templet, a reciprocating slide disposed between said carriage and device, cams whereby said slide raises and lowers said device, a reciprocating head having means for forcing shapes from said templet upon said backing and means whereby said head reciprocates said slide.
5. In a machine for making inlaid linoleum, the combination with a st-ationary bed and a reciprocating head, a reciprocating carriage, a slide bar provided with camsmovable on said carriage, a vertically movable bar provided with vcams adapted to, be engaged by said cams first named, hangers suspended from said vertically movable bar, a templet suspended by said hangers, a lever pivotally connected with said carriage and said slide, means whereby said head operates said lever to move said slide to lower said vertically movable bar and said templet carried thereby.
