Application filed January To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES F. HoLYBnn, a citizen of the United States,..residing at Hotchkiss, in the countyof Delta and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ditchers, of whichthe following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in ditchers and it is an object of the? invention to provide. a device of this gen-.
general character embodying a lifting plow and vertically disposed cutting elements arranged at opposite sides of the plow to facilitate the working operation.
An additional object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this general character which can be employed to advantage in the cleaning out of laterals or the like.
Another objectof the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this general charactercomprising a lifting plow and a mold-board hinged thereto and adapted to be raised or lowered to regulate or control the delivery of the earth or the like relative to the bank of the ditch.

The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved ditcher whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensiveand otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed todescribe the same with reference to the acc0m-' panying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in top plan of a ditcher constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;

As disclosed'in the accompanying drawings, T denotes a tongue and secured as atl to the under surface of the rear portion of the tongue T is a rod 2 extending beyond the opposite sides of the tongue. The extremities of the r0d2 are suitably engaged with the elongated members 3spaced from the tongue T substantially in parallelism therewith. The forward portions of the members 3 are in conver ence as at 4 and terminate in theextensions 5 boltedyasat 6 or otherwise secured to the tongue T. The members 3 preferably comprise angle bars as is clearlyjillustrated in Figure 3 of the accompanying drawings.
Underlying the forward portions of the members 3 and held thereto by the clamps 7 are the transversely aligned sleeves 8 having their inner ends in spaced relation.
Insertible within the sleeves 8 from the outer ends thereof are the axles 9, said axles extending beyond the inner ends of the sleeves 8 and to which inner extended portions of the axles 9 are secured the collars 10 whereby the axles 9 are effectively main: tained in appliedposition, As herein disclosed the collars 10 snugly fill the space between the inner ends of the sleeves 8. e v
The outer end portions of the axles 9 are provided with-the'rock arms 11 terminating in the outstanding stub shafts .12 on which are mounted the supporting wheels W. The outer end portions of the axles 9 are also provided with upstanding rock arms 14; which are operatively connected through the .instrumentality of the links 15 with the upstanding levers16. The levers 16. are pivotally connected with the members 3 and each of said levers 16 is pro vided with a conventional latch mechanism 17'coacting with 'a rack 18 carried by a member 3. By proper manipulation of the levers 16 the wheels W may be vertically adjusted as the requirements of practioe may necessitate and such adjustment is of particular advantage in view of the fact that one of the wheels W may be adjusted independently of the other.

Secured to the under surface of the by the forward portion tongue T at a predetermined point in advance of the sleeves 8 are the'cross members 19 in superimposed relation and extending beyond opposite sides of the tongue. The extremities of the members 19 terminate in depending arms 20, the arms on each side of the tongue T being in spaced relation to receive therebetween the forward end portion of a plow beam B, said portion of the beam being held to the arms 20 by the bolt 21 selectively engaged through the openings 22 spaced in adirection lengthwise of the arms 20.
The rear portions of the beams B are continued by the depending arcuate shafts 23 which are secured at their extremities to the lifting plow P, said plow; having its entering edge pointed.
The beams B underlie the sleeves 8 and are held thereto by the clamping members 24:.
The angle of the plow 1? may be varied by the adjustment of the forward end portions of the beams B as afforded by the spaced openings 22 of the arms 20.
Extending outwardly from the rear edge of the plow P are thearms 25 Jprovided with openings 26 through which are adapted tobe inserted the hooks 27 carried of the mold-board M. This connection ofthe nio1d-board M with the arms 25 permits said board M to be raised or lowered as the necessities of practice may prefer and when the moldboard M is in applied position the same is substantially a continuity of the plow beam as is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
Extending outwardly from the rear end of i the mold-board M is an arm 28 with which is operatively engaged a link 29. The link 29 is also operatively engaged with the lever 30 carried by the rearp ortion of the tongue T. Associated with the lever 30 is a latch mechanism'31 coacting with the rack 32 carried by the tongue T whereby the board M may be held in its different vertically adj usted positions.

From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a ditcher constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the. principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I. do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim 1. In a machine of the character de scribed, a tongue, a cross member mounted beneath the tongue, a pair of rearwardly extending beams adjustably pivoted on said cross member and connected at their forward ends by a draft element, the rear ends of said beams extending downwardly and carrying a-plow, cranked axle sectionscarrying ground engaging wheels at one end and having their other ends disposed between said beams and the tongue and clamped to the former, rocker arms on said. axle section, and means connected with said rocker arms for rocking the axle sections independently.
2. In a machine of the character described, a guiding tongue, a cross member secured upon the underside thereof, a pair cured upon the underside thereof, a pair of rearwardly extending beams pivoted at their forward ends upon said cross member, a draft element connecting the forward extremities of the beams, the beams having their rear ends extending downwardly, a relatively stationary plow member secured upon saidlower ends of the beams,-ground engaging wheels mounted upon axle members independently adjustable for regulating the position of the plow with respect to the ground, a mold board hinged upon the rear edge of the plow and formed to dis charge laterally, and a link and lever mechanism mounted on the tongue and connected with the mold board for varying the position thereof.
4. In a machine of the character described, a guiding tongue, a cross member mounted on the underside thereof, beams pivoted on the cross member and connected at their forward ends by a draft element, a plow carried by the beams, sleeves clamped upon the beams and extending transversely beneath the tongue, axle sections of crank formation carrying ground engaging wheels at one end and having their other ends engaged rotatably within said sleeves, rocker arms on said axle sections, and a grip released lever mechanism connected with each rooker arm for changing the position of the associated axle section for regulating the depth of cut of the plow.
