ELECTRIC SWITCH.
Application filed March 26, 1920. Serial No. 868,961.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARvm H. NERO, a citizen of the United'States of America, and residing at New Britain, in the county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Switches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to toggle switches, and particularly to a switch of the type shown in my c0 ending application Ser. N 0. 351,661, filed anuary 15, 1920, the object of my invention being to improve the latter in certain details of construction hereinafter described or shown in the accompanying drawings, in which v Fig. 1 is a plan View of a switch in which my invention is embodied in one form;

In its main features the present switch is of the type shown in my application above referred to, and comprises an insulating body 10 of inverted cup shape apertured at 11 to permit the switc operating lever 12 to pass therethrough. The body 10 is closed at its open bottom by a detachable metal cover 13 having an insulatin lining 14, both secured to the insulating ody by the end bolts 15 passing ,therethroughand engaging a supporting yoke 16' by means of which the switch ma be mounted in an outlet box or the like. l ithin the switch chamber 17 are arranged the several switch terminals 18, secured in lposition by the several screws 19 assin t rough the top of the insulating b0 y and taking into taplped lugs on the bases of the terminals. T e terminals are electrically connected to the wire terminal bindin the latter, w ich pass down through the top of the body 10 and also engage in ta ped holes in the bases of the switch termina s. Metal plates 21 are preferably arscrews 20 by the stems of ranged beneath the heads of the binding screws 20 in the wiring recesses 22 in order to afford a better 'mechanical and electrical connection with the lead wires. 7
In the form here shown the supporting yoke 16 is extended the full length of the switch and is expanded at 23 midway of its length to overlie the to a of the insulating body 10 on opposite si es of the aperture 11 for the switch lever. At this point the yoke 16 is apertured at 24 and integral lugs 26 are struck down at the opposite margins of the aperture and pierced at 26 to re ceive the bearing in 27 on which the switch lever 12 is mount frame from the strains incident to the operation of the switch lever to which the frame is subjected in the construction shown in my application above mentioned. The switch frame is struck from sheet metal and bent to shape Its spaced side pieces 28 and 29 have offset lu 30 at their 11 per edges which lie against t e inner face 0 the top of the switch body and are secured in position by screws 31 passing therethrough and taking into tapped holes 32 in the lugs. Instead of using independent end. pieces, as in my prior construction, which are riveted to the side plates, I now form the end stops by means of lugs 33 integral with and extending at right angles to the side 28, and formin struts w ich space the sides 28 and 29 o the frame apart. As will be noted, the lugs are offset sufliciently to abut against the face of the opposite side 29 of the frame,

'As in my previous construction the slots 36 formed in the legs of therocker receive operating lugs 37 at the lower end of the lever 12. The switch s ring 38 hangs from the cross piece 39 at t e top of the rocker and engages a ton e 40 struck from the bridge piece 41 o the switch. bar. The switch spring 38 is sufliciently tensioned to hold the switch bar against the bearing lugs 32, thus enabling me to utilize notch bearings 43 in the ends of the bar. In order to of the parts, the

The metal struck from the end pieces 44: to form the bearing notch I3 is offset outward to form a tongue 47, which is utilized as a rivet to hold the contact wings 48 to the switch bar. The tongue 40 to which the lower end of the spring 88 is attached is formed by slitting the bridge piece 41 and offsetting the tongue 40 upwardly therefrom to facilitate the insertion of the end of -the spring. On opposite sides of the tongue 40 the bar is not only offset downward in opposition to the tongue 40, but also spread in opposite directions to aliord a generous opening for the eye of the end of the spring.
The modifications of construction above describedfacilitate the construction and assembly of the switch" parts without in any way impairing the operation of the switch. Detail variations of construction and shape of the parts will readily occur to those skilled in the art without departing from what I claim as my invention.
I claim- 1. In body,a supporting yoke therefor having an enlarged area intermediate its ends and apertured to accommodagea switch-operatan electric switch, an insulating aeeaeee mg lever, lugs oilset toward the insulating body at opposite sides of said aperture, in combination with a switch-operating lever passing through said aperture and having legs spaced to bear against and be guided by said lugs, together with means for pivoting said lever on said lugs.
2. In an electric switch, a one-piece switch frame struck from sheet metal and comprising spaced side plates joined by marginal bridge straps at one end and having offset securing lugs at the opposite end of the side plates, together with strut lugs integral with one of said side plates and extending from the side edges thereof to the opposed side late, in combination with oscillating memers pivoted on said plates, one of said oscillating members working between the bridge straps, and the other of said oscillat ing members wor 'ng between said oiiset strut lugs and having its travel limited thereby.
3. In an electric switch, a switch yoke havin 2. lug oiiset therefrom to form an open aring slot, together with a switch blade carried by said' yoke and secured thereto by said ofiset lug.
