Description

SAFETY LOCK Filed March 9. 1921 or it may be of any other shape, the shape depending upon the length of the off-set portions of the plungers h. The key is further so `designed that, when the lock is operated from one side, the key steps or rises c adjust the tumblers I), and the steps d act on the tumblers a. If the lock is to be adapted to be operated also from the other side, double the number ofkey steps must be provided, but in a reversed order for each additional ,group of tumblers, so that the additional key steps c (Fig. 6) act on the tumblers Z) (Fig. 4), and theV key steps f act on the tumblers a. With this form of lock further additional groups of tumblers, corresponding with the vtumbler groups a and Z9 in Fig. l, may be provided, in which case the key Vwould be corresponds ingly adapted to thatfshown in Fig/8.
A cylindrical key may be used, as shown in Fig. 7 in which' case the steps or notches are provided in grooves in the key stein.V yAs shown the steps c actuate the group of tumblers b and the steps d actuate the tumblers a. If the lock is to be operable from either side,`further steps or notches e, corresponding with the steps @,and steps f correspond- Ving with the steps d, but arranged ina reversed order, must be provided. The number of the tumblers in thisform of lock may be increased as in the first form shown in Figs. l to 3. Y Y
Further the plungers 71, may be constructed as shown in Fig.
In the forms of lock illustrated, as well asin all other locks belonging to the category in question, any ,desired number of tumblers may be provided, butthe'tumblers however, inthe case of locks which are adapted` to be operable from either side,
@must be in ygroups arranged symmetrically in relation to the central plane ofthe key. `The number and vshape of the'tu'mblers,y and of their plungers It or 7L, z' maybe varied as desired. and also the `amount of movement or order may be modified.
. As the tumblers may be arranged yopposite y to each other, above one another, behindy one anotheiyor side by side, or in several orfall these positions simultaneously, an increased security is obtained 4with .locks which can be locked from oneside only, such as for instance locks for strong boxes, moneyboxes,v v
trunks andthe like. In sucli cases the ar rangement of the` tumblersneed not be `syms metrical. Insuch locks, if for instance they lare provided (as in Figi) with four groups of tumblers I), 7J a and a, the tumbler groups Z) and b may consist of any suitable tumblers arranged in any desired order. Such locks, for instance those according to Fig. l, may comprise for example only some of these groups, e. g., the groups b and l1', or the groups a and a with any desired tuniblers in any desired order, the numerous various groups which are'possible being arranged at any desired distances apart, and consisting of any desired number of tuinblers, for instance of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or more tumblers. Any desired form of key may be used, the various tongues or sections of which, in the case of locks adapted to be operable from either side, being arranged symmetrically in relation to each other, although, in thefcase of locks which are operable from one side only,
the various tongues or sections may occupyl any desired position, and need only corre#V spond with theirv respective groups of tuinblers. The tumblers and plungers used in connection therewith may be ofk any desired shape, and be made in one ory more parts. What I claim, is:
l. Incombination, a lock of theypin' tum-1 bler type having rows of tumblers with their ber of rows of tumblers, substantially as set Y forth. Y
2. A lock of the pin tumbler type specified in claim l, wherein the rows of tumblers are arranged symmetrically' in relation to the central vertical plane of the keyway in such a manner that ainanipulation of all the tuinbl'ers by means of the same key vcan be effected from either side, of the lock, sub-y stantially asset forth.'
3. AY lock as of the pin tumbler type specified in' claim l, having two main rows of tumblers and in which eachwmain row is duplicated by similar tuinblers arranged in inforceinent row, substantiallyl as set forth.
Intestimony whereof I have hereuntoset my hand Vin the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
