OIL-HOLE CAP.
Application filed September 29,1923. Serial No. 665,587.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADAM 1V. iKAUFMAN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil- Hole Caps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
This invention relates to oil hole covers such, for instance, as covers for oil holes formed in timer casings.
Objects. of this invention are to provide a strong and simple type of oil hole cover in which the spring may be slipped in place after the rest of the parts have been assembled, in which the finishing, such as nickel plating polishing etc; of the device may take place before the spring is positioned as no marring of the device is produced by the aositionin of the s rin in which the riveting of the spring is avoided, in which the spring is not clamped beneath the sleeve which receives the spark advancing rod, and in which the utmost ease of assembling is secured.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary sectional view of the device showing the cover closed, such view corresponding to a section on the line 11 of Figure 3.

Figure 3 is a developed view partly broken away, on the line 33 of Figure 1, such view showing the arm laid out in a single plane.
The timer casing 1 is provided with an oil hole 2. On this casing an arm 3 is riveted or otherwise secured and is provided with a sleeve 4 adapted to receive the usual spark advancing rod for the timer. This arm 3 may be extended to provide a base 5 (see Figure 3) and this base i provided with an upstruck or flange portion 6 surrounding the oil hole 2 of the timer casing. The arm 3 is further provided with upstruck lugs having inwardly turned curved portions 7 which are spaced from the body portion of the arm, as may be clearly seen from Figures 1 and 2. The cover comprises a substantially circular member 8 which is adapted normally to be positioned over and in contact with the upstanding flanges 6. This circular member is provided with a manipulating upturned ear 9 to aid in opening and closing the device, and is further provided with an outwardly extending arm 10 pro vided with a reduced portion 13 adapted to be positioned between the lugs 7. This portion 13 is provided with laterally extending trunnions or ears 14 which are adapted to be received beneath the lugs 7, as illustrated in the drawings, and to pivotally support the cover. The end of the portion 13 is fiat, as indicated at 15, for a purpose as hereinafter to appear.
In assembling the device, the cover is positioned by slidingthe ears or trunnions 1t beneath the lugs 7. fiat spring 16 is slipped beneath the ears or trunnions 14 and is of such length as to contact with the. sleeve 4. It may be slightly bowed downwardly, as indicated at 17, and may be received in a corresponding notch formed in the body portion of the arm 3, asshown in Figures 1 and 2. This spring tends to assume its straight shape and therefore presses outwardly against the adjacent portion of the cover and thus forces the cover downwardly into yielding engagement with the flange 6. However, when the cover is lifted, as shown in Figure 2, the flat face 15 of such ears seats against the spring 16 and holds the cover in elevated position.
Obviously, the flange 6 may be upstruck from the timer casing 1 if desired.
, It is to be particularly noted that the spring 16 is not riveted in place nor is it secured beneath the sleeve 4. This spring may be slipped into position as the final operation and may follow the finishing such as the nickel plating, polishing or other similar work on the timer case. In other words, it does not mar any portion of the device when slipped into position, as it does not require any further machine work.
It will thus be seen that an oil hole cover has been provided which is of extremely simple construction, which may be most; cheaply made, which may be readily assembled, and which is effective in operation.
Although one form of the invention has been described in considerable detail, it is to be understood that the invention may be variously embodied and is, therefore, to be limited only as claimed.
I claim:
1. The combination of a timer casing provided with an oil hole having an outwardly projecting marginal flange, a cover adapted to contact with such flange and having an Thereafter a normally outwardly extending arm provided with laterally projecting ears, lugs projecting outwardly from said casing and located outwardly of said ears, and having curved portions to receive such ears, and a spring located below the outer end of said cover and held in position solely by its inherent resiliency.
2. The combination of a timer casing having an oil hole therethrough and having a marginal flange surrounding said oil hole and a cover having a portion adapted to contact with said flange and closing said oil hole, and havin laterally extending trunnions, curved ears projecting outwardly from said timer casing and positioned upon the outer side of said trunnions and a flat spring slipped in place beneath the outer end of said cover. 3. The combination of a timer casing provided with a cover having an oil hole therethrough, an arm secured to said cover and having an opening therethrough aligning with said oil hole and provided with a man ginal flange surrounding said opening, ears struck upwardly from said arm and having inturned portions, a cover adapted to rest upon said flange and having laterally extending trunnions adjacent its outer end, and a spring tending to straighten and slipped into position beneath the outer end of said cover.
l. The combination of a timer casing provided with an oil hole, an arm secured to such casing and having an aperture aligned with said oil hole, and having a marginal flange surrounding said aperture, said arm having outwardly struck inwardly extending ears, a sleeve secured to the outer end of said arm, a cover having a portion adapted to rest upon said flange under normal conditions and having an outwardly projecting arm provided with laterally extending trunnions adjacent its outer end, and a fiat spring positioned between such arm and the outer end of said cover and contacting at one end with said sleeve, said arm having a notch adapted to receive the other end of said spring.
