TURNER, or TITTsBUIteH, rnNnsYLvAm j oAsTIive Ton FEEDERS Fort ING T MOLDS.
Application filed'February 9, 1924. Serial No. 691,736. 7
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that BLOOMFIELD H. How- ARD and ERNEST J. TURNER, citizens of the United States, residing, respectively, at Washington, District of Columbia, and Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Castings for Feeders for Ingot Molds, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in castings for feeders for ingot molds.
The object of our invention isto provide a casting for forming ingot mold feedersmade of plastic material by forcing the plastic material under pressure through a passa e formed in the casting to form a comp ete feeder of a shape to correspond with that shown in the application of even date.
Another object of our invention isto provide a casting in which the outer walls of the passage are'bellied outwardly forming outwardly extending supporting ribs for the feeder and the inner walls of said passage of a different contour whereby a feeder is formed by a single operation.
A further object of our invention is to provide a specially shaped casting adapted to form a correspondingly shaped feeder and having said arrangement hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the lower end of the cylinder showing our improved casting applied to the lower end thereof, the upper part being broken away.
Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view of Figure 1. v
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view similar to Figure 2 showing a slightly modified form of casting. I
Referring now to the drawings 1 represents the cylinder which as shown is provided at its lower end with an outwardly extending flange 2 to which is bolted the flange 3 of the outer member 4: of the casting. This outer member of the casting .is provided with a passage therethrough, the four walls 5, 6, 7 and 8 being bellied outwardly as clearly shown in Figure 2 of the drawings and connected by the four outwardly short curved walls 9, 10, 11 and 12. The upper ends of the walls 5, 6, 7 8, 9, 10,
11 and 12 are beveled as indicated at 13 for purpose hereinafter more fully described.
The cylinder 1 carries at the center a downwardly extending cylindrical member 14 which is internally screw-threaded and into which is screwed the bolt 15 which clamps an inner member 16 of the casting thereto in a horizontal alinement with the casting 4 as shown. This inner member of the casting has four straight walls 17 18, 19 and 20 which have their upper ends beveled as indicated at 21. walls 21 and 13 of the two members of. the casting form a'passage having a flared upper end whereby the plastic material is compressed in its passage through the space between the inner and outer members of the casting.
In Figure 3 we have show approximate.
ly the same arrangement as that shown in Figure 2, except that the bellied walls 24, 25, 26 and 27 are oval instead of round and ofa less width than the bellied walls 5,6, 7 and 8 of Figure 2 and the curved walls 28, 29, 30 and 31 are of a greater length than'the walls 9, 10, 11 and 12 of Figure 2. The central member 32 of the casting is of a circular form and. has its upper end beveled as indicated at 33. The upper ends of the walls of the outer member 4 are beveled as indicated at 34 to form the flared upper end for the purpose stated in respect to Figures 1 and 2.
Having thus fully described our invention What we claim is 7 1. A castingfor feeders for ingot molds comprising an outer member having outwardly bellied walls and an inner member having outer walls of a different contour.
' 2. A casting for feeders for ingot molds comprising an outer member having in wardlybellied, oppositely arranged walls and-an inner member having walls of a different contour.
3. A casting for feeders for ingot molds comprising an outer member having four oppositely arranged outwardly bellied walls and an inner member having outer walls of a different contour. l
4. A casting for feeders for ingot molds comprising an outer member having four outwardly bellied, oppositely arrangedwalls connected by four short outwardly curved The beveled walls.
walls arranged in a diflerent arc'of a circle and an inner member-having outer walls of a difierent contour.
5. A casting for feeders for ingot molds comprising an outer member having four outwardly bellied, oppositely arranged walls and an inner member having four straight 6. A casting for feeders for ingot molds BLOOMFIELD H. HOWARD. ERNEST TURNER.
