To all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that I, ARTHUR R. KONSALIK, citizen of the 'UnitediStates, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin 'Skylights, of which the followingis a specification.
The object of my invention is a novel skylight for building structures such as theatres, factories'and the like; which. may be mechanically operated for ventilating purposes; and automatically operated in case of an emergency such 'as fire, so as to permit the escape '01": smoke and fumesj Another object of myinvention' is askylight of such construction" that it'may' be operated more easily and with less effort showing the means for the. simultaneous" operation of a plurality of skylights.

For the purpose of illustrating my invention I have shown in the accompanying drawings one form thereof .which at present preferred by me, since thesame has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be' understood that the various instrumental? ties of whichmy inventionconsists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to theprecise arrangement and organization of the 1nstru-.
mentalities as herein shown and described.
Referring now to the drawings, each skylight 1 consists of an inclined frame or amb structure 2, and a cover therefor made up oftwo wings 3 and 4 respectively, hingedly secured to the jamb by means of inclined pins or pintles 5, which are at such an angle to the horizontal plane. as to tend to open the skyli ht by a fraction of the weight of the cover only. This has the decided advantage over a horizontally. pivoted cover, in solar as only a fraction of the weight of the cover must be opposed in "closing the skylight; whereas in a horizontally pivoted cover the" full weight of the cover must be raised in order to bring the same into" closed position.
Attached to each wingof the cover is the flexible connection 6 which leads to the cable 7 which after passing around an idle pulley 8 located on thefside of the framework opposedrto the skylight/ is secured through the adjustable turn-knuckle 9 to the central ring 10. Through this ring 10 all the skylight covers are operated simultaneously by means of the single cable 11 which winds up on a drum, not shown, operated by means of'the worm 12 and gear 13 which may be situated somewhere along the wall of the buildingor at any other point so as to be easily accessible.
Between the cable '11 and ring 10 there is interposed a fusible link .14 for the purpose of automatically releasing all the skyll iight covers simultaneously in the event of The T member 15 of the jamb so overlaps and engages with the edges of the two wings 3 and 4 as to makea tight joint when the'covers are in a closed position, said T members being centrally positioned and receiving the juxtaposed inturned edges of the cover sections when the latter are closed as seen in Figure 5.
The pintles 5 are supported at their ends in bearings 16 and 17 located in the base member 18 and 'upper'member l9 respectively, saidbearings being so positioned relative to each other, as to throw the upper end of the pintle 5 out or" vertical align ment with'the lower end, thus inclining the same.
It will be noted that the mechanical operation of both closing and opening the skylights is made considerably easier by the angularly pivoted covers, while an equally rapid, automatic release of the covers is obtained through the fusible linkas in sky-. lights employing horizontally pivoted covers.
I am aware of the patent to Goldman No. 1,009,502 wherein the covers are shown as swinging downwardly on horizontal pintles, but my invention is differentiated therefrom'since my covers swing laterally upon inclined pintles, and in addition my covers are made in two parts or sections. which facilitates and eXpedites the automa' tic or manual operation thereof, and to none of the devices of the prior art do, I herein make my claim. r
I preferably locate the manually operated mechanism for the cable 11 comprising parts seen at the lower right hand portion of Fig.

I desire to also call especial attention to the feature of the sectional covers comprising wings 3 and 4 since it will be apparent that in the case of lateral movablewings such as I employ in case of fire, the firemen can shut one of the wings, as the wing 4, and allow the other wing, as 3, e 1in Fig. 5, to stand open, and through this open space he can insert his hose for the purpose of putting out the fire. These are practical features of very great importance in practice and are present in no other construction with which I am familiar. 7
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A. skylight construction of the character stated, comprising a supporting structure having a vertically disposed wall, a frame projected therefrom including a I downwardly sloping top and vertical-s ides,
the outer edges of which side s incline from the juncture of the frame with said wall upwardly and outwardly, pintles inclined upwardly and outwardly and arranged at the frame outer corners in parallelism with the said inclined edges, an outwardly opening laterally movable cover section carried by each pintle each cover section having an 1nner inwardly deflected flange, a central,
substantially T-shaped outwardly inclined a supporting structure having a frame provided with a top and vertical sides, whose outer edges incline upwardly and outwardly, oppositely located pintles inclined upwardly and outwardly and arranged at opposite outer corners of said frame, and having their top and bottom ends mounted therein, a laterally movable cover section carried by each pintle, said cover "sections having their inner edges provided with inwardly deflected terminalflanges, an outwardly and upwardly inclined T-shaped "member carried by said frame and posipassed over said pulley and securedto said ring, another connection leading from said ring, and a fusible link in said connection."
