Description
UNITED STATES PATENT EEIOEo JOHN w. LOWE, OE ASHLAND, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 150,662, dated April 21,1674; application filed January 31, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. LOWE, of Ashland, in the county of Ashland and State of Ohio, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Flows; and'I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specication, and to the letters and gures of reference marked thereon.
This invention has relation to turn-plows, and it consists in the construction of a plowstandard, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
The following is a description of my improvements vIn the annexed drawings, A designates the plow-beam B, the handles; (l, the moldboard, D, the land-side bar, and E the plowpoint. The stan dard consists of a vertical portion, a, a forward inclined portion, al, and a rear curved portion, b, which latter is slotted and notched, for a purpose hereinafter ex.- plained. The front inclined portion al of the standard is beveled to a sharp edge, and constructed with a laterally-inclined wing, a2., which affords a firm bearing for the moldboard O just above the share F. The front edges ofthe mold-board and land-side are beveled to sharp edges, which are adjusted into a V-shaped groove, c, formed in the rear edge of the plow-point E. This brings the landside of the point E iiush with the land-side bar I), and allows me to secure this bar, the mold-board, and the point E rigidly together by bolts z' t', passed obliquely through them. I also extend the mold-board side of the point E well up and over the mold-board, and thus have a removable cutting-edge on the point E. The share F is secured beneath the moldboard, and its front beveled end is fitted into the groove c in the point c, as shown in Fig. 3. This share is provided with two rows of holes, which allow it to be adjusted as it is worn away. The front ends of the two handles B are beveled and secured together, and connected to the mold-board and standard by means of a pivot, d. In rear of this pivot l the right-hand handle B is secured to the slotted portion b of the standard by means of a beveled T-headed bolt, g, and a nut; and the left-han d handle B is secured to a slotted plate, b", which is bolted to the inner side of the mold-board by means of a T-headed bolt, gf, and a nut. The slots through which bolts g g pass are arcs vof circles concentric to the axis of the pivot d. Consequently, by loosening the said nuts the handles B B can be adjusted up or down to suit the height of the plowrnan. At the rear portion of the landside bar, and at or near its lower edge, I secure a iin or cutter, h, which will cnt under each succeeding sod, and keep the plow steady and down to its work. This cutter h will also aid the share in the performance of its duty, and is especially useful in land where there are many root-s. The curved extension b of the standard will serve as a brace for 'the rear portion of the land-side bar, to which the cutter h is secured, and sustain this bar against the lateral strain O11 it produced by the cutter. The colter G is secured to the beam A by means of a staple, p, and two lipped plates, a u, by removing one of which the colter can be detached from its beam, or adjusted higher or lower. The notches in the front edge of the colter prevent it from slipping'.
IVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by-Letters Patent, is-
A plow-standard composed of the vertical portion a., forward inclined portion al, having a laterallyinclined wing, a2, and the rear curved portion b, having Vslot and adjustingnotches, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my naine in the presence of two witnesses.
J. W. LOWE. Witnesses:
NV. H. MGMURRAY, W. C. WIDGEON.
