Application filed July 23,
To alt who? may cancer/"1- Be it known that I, Plume BRAUN, e. cit zen of the United States, and a resident Syracuse in the count of Humid-age and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Shirt-ironing iviachine of which the following is u specification.
This invention relates to shirt ironing machines and has for its object a particularly simple and efficient collar band holder, which a self-contained structure and llfy applied to pressing machine; and further which is narticularly applicable to pressing" machines having an upper pivoted pressing heed of the type shown in Patent No. LEW-4988i issued Jan. 8 31,1918 whcre y such machines can be used as shirt ironing machines.
The invention consists in the novel tea-- tures and in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this invention, reference is bad to the accompanying drawings, in which like cheracters designate correspondin arts in all the views.
%1 'ure l is a side elevation of a pressing machine embodyin my invention.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary face view of the upper pressing need.
. Figure 3 is a fragmentary face view of the lower bed or buck. v
Fignre is an enlarged plan Vle'V of the collar band holder, the contiguous portitm of the lower buck being also shown.
Figure 5 is a sectional view on line El--5 Fi ure figifire 6 is a detail view of a detached cleniping/ niember.
This shirt; ironing machine comprises gem erally at lower pressing bed or buck, an u per pressing llead movable toward and from the buck end carried by a support in the form of a lever pivoted between its ends to the frame of the machine and carrying the pressing head at its front end, the pressing' heed having an arcuate cutout at one end, and a collar bend holding means mounted. on the face of the lower buck and including operating members extending upwardly through the cutout when the pressing head is down, this collar band holding means being preferably a self-contained structure detachablymountable on the lower buck.
l designates the lower bed or buck, and2 3920. serial No, 398,508.
the upper pressing head, the lower buck bemounted upon a frame or table I), and the p 'essing head being cerricd at the front end of e support as a lever t pivoted at 5 between its ends on av horizontal tixis'to a standard 6 forming part of the frame and being connected at its rear end to operating mechanism including toggle links 7 and 8 end a treedle 9. Also a suitable counteu balancing weight 10 is mounted on the rear end of the lever. The upper and lower bucks l and 2 are suitably heated by steam or other heating medium conducted through the hollow interiors thereof.
Theupper pressing head 2 is formed with en nrcuete cutout 11 at one end and collar bend holding means is mounted on the upper face of; the lower buck in alincuient with its cutout.
12 designates the collar band holding unit. The collar band holding means or unit 1:9, comprises a base 13 mounted on the lower buck 1 and having an upwardly extending Part and clamping means supported by said pert coacting with the base tohold tnc coller band, said means projecting through the ercuete cutout ll of thepressing hood 9 when the pressing head is down.
The 18 is here shown provided with a stem 13 which extends through a hole lat in the lower buck and which tlfi'fidfitlflt its lower end to receive a nut 15. Also the base is formed with e. depend ing boss 16 from which the stem projects the boss 16 being arranged in the recess or countersink l in the lower buck. This boss it; formed with a guidew'ay for the purpose hereinafter described. The base 133 is here shown as provided. with an upwardly extending arm 18 and with an arcuate beveled edge face 19.
The clamping means cooperate with the base to hold the collar band, is carried by the arm 18 and movable vertically along the same, and ludes a member movable toward end loin an arcuate eigo face 19 of base to clamp a collar bond against the same. 4 i
lnthe illustrated form of my invention,
this means comprises a carriage or slide 20 movable in the guide 21 formed in the upwardly extending arm 18 of the base 12 and a clamping member 22 plvotally mounted on the slide and having an arcuate head 23 movable toward and from the arcuate riage and the clamping member 22, the
a aeoousaa edge face '19 of the as, the slide having an.up wardly extending handle and the clamping member 22 also having an up-. 1 wardly extending handle 24 opposed to the spring 26 having arms 29 and '30 at its opposite ends, the arm 29.being anchored to the carriage at 31 and the arm pressing against the outer face of the clamping member, thus the spring holds the clamping member in position and the clamping member pivots or fulcrums about the spring or about a point above the spring. The clamping means consisting of the head'23 and wardly and downwardly along the arm 18 and is also movable on its pivot toward and from the edge face of the base.
Additional means, as a screw 32 may be provided for holding the clamping member from displacement.
It will be seen that the operating mecha- I nism is a self-contained structure with the base, which base is attachable to the lower buck of the pressing machine and that the clamping members can be operated directly without the use of complicated and expensive operating mechanism; and further that the operating mechanism extends through the cutout of the upper pressing head of the' pressing machine.
' Thlsconstruction provides a particularly a simple and efiicient way of applying collar hand holders to platen type of pressing machines, in which the upper pressing head is carried by the pivoted lever or support. Heretofore, shirt ironing machines have required a different type of pressing machine from the usual pivoted type of garment pressing machine and the operating mechanism for the collar band holder is .com- I plicated and expensive.
he base is also provided with suitable expanding members 33, 34 having convergmg stems 35 movable in suitable guides in I I the base and operated by means of a slide 36 movable in the guide formed on the boss 16 and connected to the expanding members 33, 34, by rods 38 projecting from the head or block 39 carried by the slide 36. This invention, except that it is a self-contained structure with the collar hand holding means and operating mechanism therefor.
