other and geared to a motor in a manner' whereby the drills are rapidly rotated in opposite directions, the invention providing for simplicity in construction and compactness in the arrangement of the component parts.
In carrying out the invention, the drills are operated by means of an air motor which is equipped with an exhaust chamber designed to receive and store the water from the motor exhaust, and allowing the air tol escape through the chamber.
@ther objects and advantages will appear when the following detailed description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawings forming part of this application, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views and wherein:
Figure 1 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view, showing the relative arrangement and mounting of the drill spindles.
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 2--2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a similar .view taken on line 3 3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a longitudinal sectlonal view through the drill.
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on line 5 5 of Figure 4;. I
Figure 6 is a sectional view taken on the line 6-6 of Figure 4. y.
Figure 7 is a detail view of one shaft and spindle.
Figure .8 is a detall v1ew of one pf the gears designed to mesh with said p1n1on.y
Figure 9 is a viewsimilar to Figure 8 showing the other gear which is adapted to surround the gear shown in Figure 8.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 10 indicates a jacket or tubular casing in which are arranged the drill spindles and the mechanism for operating the drills, and this jacket may be of any suitable dimensions without departing from the spirit of the invention. In accordance with the present invention, use is made of two drills indicated at 11' and 12 respectively, these drills being arranged one beneath the other and yoperate in the hole or opening in the grund at the same time. The drill 11 is supported by a spindle 13 which passes up into the jacket 10, while the drill 12 is supported by a spindle 14 which is arranged within the spindle 13 of the drill 11. The spindle 14 revolves within the spindle 13, while the latter mentioned spindle revolves in a tubular bearing 15. rThreaded onto the lower end of the jacket 10 is a couplin 16, which is threadedly associated with t e enlarged extremity 17 -of the tubular bearing 15, and in this manner the/bearing is connected with the jacket 10. The spindle 14 is provided with a hole` 18 to allow for the flow of water to the drill points. A pipe 18 is adapted for thispurpose and -is shown in full and dotted lines in Figure 4 of the drawing. The up er end of the tubular bearing 15 is threa ed into a coveror casing 19 which is utilized to house the gears to be presently described, and through the instrumentality of which the' drills directions at a considerably high speed. The spindle '13 is secured to a cup-shaped gear 20, the teeth of which are arranged on the inside, while the spindle 14 which is arranged within the spindle 13 is keyed to a smaller gear, the teeth of which are arranged on the outside, this gear being indicated at 21. Interposedbetween the gears 20 and 21 is a pinion 22 carried by a shaft 23 which is journaled inxa bearing .24 form.- ing part of the cover or casing 19. The jacket 10 which contains the construction just described, is fastened in any suitable manner to the drill stem 25 as at 26.
The shaft 23 is suitably connected to an air motor indicated generally at 27, the o erating Huid being connected from an air compressor (not shown) to the motor through the pipe 28. The pipe 28 passes through an exhaust chamber 29 which is adapted to receive and store the water from fthe motor exhaust, an exhaust pipe 30 extending from the motor and terminating within the chamber 29 for this purpose. Surrounding the supply p1pe28 d eater- 11 and 12 are rotated in opposite' ing the chamber 29 is a secondary exhaust pipe 31 which leads to the air compressor above referred to. The jacket which houses all of the mechanism is positioned Within the well casing or the like indicatedvat 32.
In practice, the motor is started, incident to which the drills 11 and 12 are rapidly rotated in opposite directions, the operating uid being-conveyed to the motor through the pipe 28, while the water from the eX- haust of the motor is deposited in the chamber 29 by means of the pipe 30, while the exhaust pipe leads from the chamber to the air compressor as above stated. The drill is not only very elicient in operation, but the yconstruction and arrangement of the component parts are also very simple and compactly arranged.
While it is believed that from the foregoing description the nature land advantages -of the invention will bereadily apparent, I
one within the other, a tubular bearing for the outermost spindle, said bearing being arranged within and connected to said jacket, a gear on each of said spindles, a pinion arranged between and meshing with said gears, a motor for rotating said pinion whereby the drills and spindlesare rapidly rotated in opposite directions.
2. A drill of the character described comprising a 'acket, a pair of superposed drills arranged eneath said jacket, spindles supporting said drills and arranged one within the other, a tubular bearing for the outermost spindle, said bearing being arranged within the jacket and having an enlarged extremity disposed beneath one end of the jacket, a coupling sleeve threadedly connected with said extremity and the adjacent end of said jacket, a gear on each spindle, a pinion arranged between and meshing with said gears whereby the spindles and drills are rapidly rotatedin opposite directions, a i
casing covering said gears and pinion and connected with the adjacent extremity of said bearing, and a motor arranged within said jacket and operatively associated with said pinion for the purpose specilied.
In testimony whereof I alix my signature.
