To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, lVVILLIABI H. Mo- GRATH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Roselle Park, in the county of Union i and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Boiler, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a continuous boiler or still and aims to provide a device of this class wherein the products of -combustion are thoroughly utilized to produce the desired effect. It further provides for means whereby circulation through the system is greatly increased. Further objects will present themselves as the description proceeds, it being within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility ofthat class of devices to which the present invention belongs. It being further understood that slight changes in the precise embodiment of the device may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any Vof the advank tages thereof.

Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, the numeral 1 designates an upper drum, the same being supported in any desirable manner on the walls 2 of the furnace 3. A lower drum indicated generally by the numeral 4 is located directly over the re box of the furnace and is coextensive with the tank. The lower drum 4 is divided into a pluralityof separate-compartments 5, each compartment being provided with a longitudinally extended baffle plate 6. series or group of tubes 9 and 10 are connected to the headers 7 and 8 respectively. These tubes extend upwardly adjacent the upper drum, each group being connected to an upper header 11 and 12. Each of the headers 11 and 12 is connected to the upper drum 1 through the medium of a vapor tube 13, the vapor tubes being connected to a coil 14 located in the bottom of the Lipper drum at a point below the normal liquid level in the upper drum, the coil having perforations 15 throughout its entire length.
Liquid enters the system through an inlet pipe 16 connected to the first header 11, and passes downwardly through the first group of tubes into the lower drum, where, by reason of the deflecting plate, it is forced to How to the lower portion of the lower drum where it is heated, and rises on the other side of the defiecting plate 6 through the tubes 1() to the header 12.
In boiling oil, vapor generated by the rise in temperature as the liquid passes' through the lower drum, is conducted through the pipe 13 to the coil 14, passes out the perforations 15, the lightest vapor passing through the liquid in the upper drum 1, the heavier fractions being condensed back into liquid form and are recirculated through the system. A pipe 17 connected to the upper drum 1, above the liquid level, conducts the vapor from the upper drum.
(jirculation of the liquid is continued from the header 12 through a pipe 18 to another of the headers 11. Having lost some of its heat, the liquid falls to the lower drum, is re-heated and rises on the other side through the tubes 10 and so continues to circulate, alternately rising and falling on opposite sides of the lower drum, to the end of the system.
Any desired number of circulating units as just described may be connected to form the system, and in thisy description, only one unit has been referred to specifically, it being understood that throughout the specification and drawings, the numeral 8 indicates the group of tubes through which liquid is returned to the lower drum, and the numeral 10 designates the tubes through which the heated liquid rises to the upper header.
Extending longitudinally through the heating chamber above the lower drum, is
a baille plate 18 which forms theback Wall of an insulatedv compartment 19 forr each group of tubes 9. The walls of these compartments are asbestos lined as shown at 20 and completely enclose the group of .a pipe 23 and from the upper drum back to the first header 11 through overflow ports .211 formed in the side of the tank, so that continuous recirculation of the unvaporized portion of the liquid is provided for, together with the flow of fresh liquid from the pipe 16.
A transverse battle wall 25 extends across .the heating chamber near the rear of the said chamber and directs t-he products of combustionto the upper portion of the combustion chamber, where it passes over the top of the wall 25 at one side of the upper 4drum and down on the side of the lower drum, passing through an opening 26 in a wall 27 under the lower drum to the other side from whence the residue passes through an opening 28 in the rear wall of the furnace to the stack.
It will be noted that by reason of t-he casing for the compartments 19, the products xof combustion'are forced to follow a tor- -tuous passage from the furnace over the f baffle 18, down the other side of the baliie and under a battle 30, then to the top of the baffle 18 and so continues.
It will be understood of course that clean out openings, man holes and like appurtenances incidental to the proper construction of a boiler will be located wherever required.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is :f
l. A device of the class described com- `prising .a lower drum; an upper drum, headers on opposite sides of the upper drum; tubes connecting the headers with the lower drum; connections between the headers, the connections on one side of the upper drum alternating with the connections on the opypositeside of the upper drum; and means whereby the headers are connected to the upper drum.
2. A device of the class described comprising a lower drum, an upper drum; terminal and intermediate headers on opposite sides Vof the upper drum; tubes connecting thel headers with the lower drum; connections between the headers, the connections on one side of the upper drum alternating with the connections on opposite sides of the upper an inlet for one terminal header is adjacent to one end of the upper drum, an outlet for one terminal header which 'is adjacent to the other end of the upper drum and vapor outlets for the headers, the vapor outlets discharging into the upper drum.

A device of the class set forth in claim 2 and further characterized by the fact that the terminal headers adjacent opposite ends of the upper drum are in communication with the upper drum to permit liquid to pass from one of the terminal headers into the upper drum and from the upper drum into the other terminal header.

5. A device of the character described comprising a lower drum; an upper drum; headers on opposite sides of the upper drum; tubes connecting the headers with the lower drum; connections between the headers, the
drum, which connections on one side of thc upper drumy alternating with the connections on the opposite side of the upper drum; a depending baffle in the lower drum and constituting means for preventing a direct cross-flow from the tubes on one side of the lower drum to the tubes on the other side of the lower drum, and means whereby the headers are connect-ed to the upper drum.
6. A device of the class described comprising a lower drum and an upper drum; headers on opposite sides of the upper drum; tubes connecting the headers with the lower drum; connections between the headers, the connections on one side of the upper drum alternating with the connections on the opposite side of the upper drum; a coil in the upper drum, the coil having outlets to the upper drum below the level of liquid in the upper drum, and vapor outlets connecting the headers with the coil.

A device of the class described comprisinga lower drum; an upper drum; terminal and intermediate headers onv opposite sides of the upper drum; headers on opposite sides of the lower drum, tubes connecting the headers on the upper drum with the headers on the lower drum; connections on the headers on the upper drum, the connections on one side of the upper drum altern ating with the connections on the opposite side of the upper drum; an inlet for one terminal header which is adjacent to one end of the upper drum, an outlet for one terminal header which is adjacent to the other end of the-upper drum and vapor outlets for the headers, the outlets discharging into the upper drum.
8. A device of the character described comprising a lower drum; an upper drum; headers on opposite sides of the upper drum;
tubes connecting the headers with the lower drum, thetubes on `one side constituting an inlet from the header to the lower drum and the tubes on the other side constituting an outlet from the lower drum to the header; and a casing surrounding the inlet tubes of the lower drum.
9. A device of the class described comprising a lower drum; an upper drum located above the lower drum; a combustion chamber under the lower drum, a longitudinal baiie plate between the lower drum and the upper drum and coeXtensive therewith, a transverse baille plate adjacent one end of the lower drum and upper drum; headers on opposite sides of the upper drum; tubes connecting the headers with the lower drum; connections between the headers; the connections on one side of the upper drum alternating with the connections on the opposite side of the upper drum, casings for alternate sets of tubes, the casings also alternating on opposite sides of the upper drum, whereby a circuitous passage is provided for the products of combustion, and vapor outlets for the headers, the Vapor outlets discharging into the upper drum.
