M. MIGKELSUN. Hay and Cotton Presses.
mi'inu Patented April 21 UNITED STATES" PATENT FFIO'E. I
MIOHEAL MIOKELSON, OF ASHLAND, OREGON, ASSIGNOR TO OBSON A. DAVIS, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN HAY AND COTTON PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,943, dated April 21,1874; application filed March 21,1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MIOHEAL MIOKELSON, of Ashland, in the county of Jackson and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Hay and Cotton Presses, of which the following is a specification: v
Figure 1 is a side view of my improved press,
parts being broken away to show the construcbars and stirrups or pawls by which the follower is operated, as hereinafter described.
The beam F, having follow-block G attached,
works vertically in slots in the narrow sides of the box or casing B, which is suitably secured in frame A. The lower parts I) of the casingare detachable, to allow removal of the bale. II is a bar, havin g teeth or notches formed in its inner edge and secured to the lower crossbar of the frame A. The bars H pass up through slots in the beam F, and are attached to the cross-beam E. I I are bars having notches or teeth formed in their outer edges, and also passing slots in the beams F and E. To the lower ends of the bars I are pivoted the levers J, whose inner ends are pivoted to the lower parts of the bars H. By this construction'the bars I will be moved up and down by operating the levers J. K L are two stirrups, which are pivoted to the end parts of the follow-beam F, between the bars H and I. One of the stirrups, as K, passes around the stationary bar H, so as to take hold of its teeth, and thus hold the follower against the back pressure of the material being baled. The other stirrup, L, passes around the movable bar I.
By this construction, as the bar I is raised by the upward movement of the lever J, the said bar I will slide up through the stirrup L and, as the bar I isdrawn downward by the downward movement of the lever J, its teeth catch upon the said stirrup L, and thus draw the follower down with it, compressing the material. The teeth of the bars H I should he graduated, being made larger at the upper end and gradually becoming smaller toward the lower end, so that the press may be worked with the greatest advantage of leverage where the greatest resistance is encountered. To the upper sides of the projecting ends of the follow-beam F are attached the ends of the ropes lVI,which pass over guide-pulleys N pivoted to the projecting ends of the cross-beam E. To the free ends of the ropes lVI may be attached weights to balance the follower, and thus support it, when raised to any desired point, or upon them may beformed loops to hook upon catches 0 attached to the lower part of the frame'A, to hold the follower suspended at any desired height. To the lower part of one of the side arms of the stirrups L is pivoted a short lever, P, the inner end of which is so formed as to strike against the other stirrup K, raising said stirrup K away from the teeth of the bar H. As the stirrup K is raised its lower part strikes again st the stop Q attached to the follow-beam F, and is stopped, which causes the said lever P to raise the stirrup L from the teeth of the bar I, in which position the lever, stirrup, and stop lock themselves so that the follower may be raised freely. or projection attached to or formed upon the innerend of the lever P strikes against a stop, It, attached to the frame-work of the press, which disengages the lever P and allows the stirrups K L to drop, ready to take hold of the teeth of the bars H I, when the lever J is again operated.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcut- The combination of the catch-lever P and stops Q It with the pawl-stirrups K L, the toothed bars H I, levers J J, and the followbeam and frame-work of the press, substantially as herein shown and described.
MIOHEAL MIGKELSON.
