Description

ICE REMOVER Filed Feb. 25, 1924 I ,1. .16 INVENTOR WITNESS ATTORNEY Patented June 24, 1924.
NITED S A ES WIL AM o. SLOAN, or onmnnn'miw JERSEY.
"Ion nEMov'nRQ Application filed February 25, 1924. Serial K01 195405. 1
To all whom it may concern; I
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM C; SLonN, a citizen of the United States,"residing at Camden,-in the county of Camden and State of New J ersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ice Removers, of which the following is a specificationl This invention relates to improvements in devices for removing ice from trolley Wires and has for an object the provision of a novel and eflicient wire engaging member for this purpose, which will act to scrape the wire and to agitate the same sufficiently to remove the ice from the entire circumference of the Wire.
Another object of the invention is the provision of means for removably securing the wire engaging member and its operating means to the trolley arm, so that the same may be conveniently attached or removed;
With the above and other objectsin view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details ofconstruction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims,
In the drawings Figure 1 is an elevation showing the invention in use.
Figure 2 is an edge view of the same.
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a portion of the rim of the rotatable member.
Figure 5 is a detail perspective view of one of the scraper elements.
Referring to the drawings in detail where in like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 11) indicates a portion of the usual trolley arm which is carried by .a car and to which the trolley wheel is attached, while the trolley wire is indicated at 11 The invention which is designed to be removably secured to the arm 10 comprises a frame 12. This frame includes a base or platform 13 from which depends a plate 14, the lower edge of this plate being arranged at an incline with respect to the base and carrying substantially semi-circular clamps 15. These clamps are adapted to engage around the arm 10 and when so engaged will maintain the platform 13 subthe wire.
stanti'ally horizontal, suitable-means as "bolts 16' being provided for securing the clampto the arm. 7 i
The frame 12' further includes verticallydis posed spaced bearing standards 17-which rotatably support a shaft 18; This shaft has secured thereon a wheel '19 of suitable insulating material; This wheel isof novel construction and comprises a removable sectional metal'r'im 20 whichis provided with radially disposed' lugs '2l,-the sections of the rim being secured together and to the wheel 19 by screws or similar fastening devices 22.
The lugs 21 hav bolted or otherwise secured thereto scraper elements 23 which are adapted to engage the wire 11 and are so shaped as to scrape the ice from the wire. For this purpose the elements are substantially hook-shaped and are provided at their outer ends with outwardly received trans? versely curved cutting edges 24 which so gage a scraperalong the under :surface of In addition, these elements 23 impart a certain amount of agitation to the wire 11 so that as the ice is removed from the lower portion of the wire by a scraping action the remainder of the ice around the circumference of the wire will be shaken therefrom.
Also secured upon the shaft 18 is a sprocket wheel 25 which is connected by means of a chain 26 with a sprocket wheel 27 secured to the shaft of a motor 28, th latter being mounted upon the platform 13 within the frame 12.
Pivotally mounted upon the platform is an arm 29 which is urged upward to engage the trolley wire by means of a spring 30. This arm carries a trolley, wheel 31and supplies current for the, operation of the motor 28.
It will be apparent from the foregoing description and accompanying drawings that the invention provides an exceedingly simple and efficient device which may be removably secured to the trolley arm to effectually remove ice from the trolley wire.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention what is claimed is v U 1. An ic'e' remover for overhead'trolleys comprising in combination with the trolley arm of a car, a rotatable trolle Wire engaging member, means for rotating said memher, and means for rcmovably securin said member and its rotating means to sai arm.
2. An ice remover for overhead'trolleys comprising in combination with the trolley arm of a car, a rotatable trolley Wire engagmg member including spaced hook-shaped cutting elements, means for rotating said member andmeans for removably securing saidmem'b er and its rotating means to said arm. a
Sr-An ice, remover for overhead trolleys comprising in combination With the trolley arm of, a car, a motor supporting frame, means for removably securing theframe to said a'lfm3'St motor supported upon the frame a rotatable trolley vvire engaging member mounted upon the frame, means operatively connecting the motor and rotatable member, whereby the latter may be operated and means whereby current may be supplied to the motor from the trolley Wire. 1
4. An ice remover for overhead trolleys comprising in combination with the trolley WILLIAM C. 'SLOAN.
whereof I aflix my signature. 7
