LOUIS AUGUSTUS GREEN, OF GREER, SOUTH CAROLINA, ASSIGNOR OF THREE- TWENTIETHS TO HADEN VE HOWELL, OF GREEK, SOUTH CAROLINA.
ROAD SCRAPER OR GRADEB AND DITOHER.
Application filed August 2, 1923. Serial No. 655,225.
T 0 all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, LoUIs- Aucos'rnos GRnn-N, a citizen of the United States of America residing at Greer, in the county of Greenville and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road Scrapers or Graders and Ditchers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates road scrapers or graders and ditchers'.
The object of this invention is to facilitate the operation of the machine by providing the runner or slide with a plurality of aligned disks and the blade or share with double edges so that the machine may be overturned and retraced over the ground when reversed, whereby the blade or share will attain the same relative angle upon the return trip on that side of the road being worked.
Another object of the invention is to arrange a running board between the runner and share and a detachable handle for the share causing it to cut deeper or raise the share when it is desirable to dump the dirt.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the grader;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the grader overturned when compared with Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the grader.
The runner or slide preferably consists of two parallel bars 1 and 2 secured together in a spaced relation by suitable spaces 3-3. Rotatably journaled between the spaced bars are a plurality of disks 4 which tend to cut or furrow in the earth and to prevent skidding of the grader when in use. Secured to one end of the runner is a shaft bar 5.
The numeral 6 indicates the blade or share, pivoted as at 7 to the slab or runner 1 in the rear of the forward disk 4.
The inner vertical edge 8 of the share is directly in line with the disk 4 causing the share to work from an even edge. The share 6 has upper and lower similar edges 9 and 10. A handle 11 is secured to the extreme outer end of the share by which the share and runner may be turned over. By
' 9 means of the hinge connection the share may be adjusted as desired relatively to the runner, and to maintain the adjustment the inner side of the runner is provided with a centrally horizontally disposed keeper or catch bar 12 with a plurality of openings 13 to adjustably receive a coupling or adjusting bolt 14 inserted in the head of a connecting rod 15, pivoted at its opposite end by means of a bolt 16 to a horizontally dis posed catch bar 17 secured to the share 6 and provided with a plurality of openings 18 whereby the inner end of the connecting rod may be adjusted.
A foot board 19 is pivotally connected to the catch bar 17 by means of a bolt 20, the outer end of said foot board passing through a slot 21 in the connecting rod 15.
A detachable handle 22 having a reduced end 23 is attached to the share 6, serving as a means by which the share may be caused to out deeper in the dirt and dump as desired.
It will thus be seen that the machine may be readily overturned or reversed and when turned around may be worked back on the same side of the road with the share at the same relative angle whereby the dirt may be worked toward the crown of the road, and the wearing qualities of the machine be greatly increased.
I claim:
A road scraping, grading and ditching machine comprising a runner provided with a plurality of aligned disks, a double edged blade movably connected to the runner in the rear of the forward runner, catch bars provided with a plurality of openings arranged horizontally of and on the inner sides of the blade and runner, a connecting rod provided with a slot intermediate of its ends, and adjustably secured to the catch bars, a foot board having its forward end pivotally connected to the blade and its free end slidably received in the slot of the connecting rod, and a detachable handle re ceived in the openings in the catch bar of the blade.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
LOUIS AUGUSTUS GREEN.
