UNITED STATES ATENT FFICE.
GEORGE \V. ZEIGLER, OF TIFFIN CITY, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWS.
To all whom 'zt may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. ZEIGLER, of Tiffin City, in the county of Seneca. and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Flows; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a landside elevation of plow. Fig. 2 is atop view. Fig. 3 is a sectional view, showing attachment and adjustment of share. Fig. 4 is an inverted view of plow.
Similar letters of reference in the several fig"- ures denote the same part.
My invention refers to the regulation of the depth of plowing by the movement of the colter-point vertically. It is designed to effect this actionindepemlentof both mold-board and share, so as not by its movement to change the form of those parts.
The nature of the invention consists in jointing the colter to the front of the landside, as will be described, so as to be movable about said front of laudside, and between it and the edge of mold-board and share, by lever action upon a. rear arm of the colter, as will be hereinafter setforth.
1n the drawings, A is the beam; B B, the handles; G, the mold-board; D, the share; E, the landside, and F the colter.
The share is. secured to a base-plate, a, of
mold-board by bolt 1), and is adjusted in position by set-screw c, as shown inFig. 3.
The landside Eis bolted to the base-plate a of the mold-board, a flange extending inward for that purpose, and is also secured to handle B by boltd. Thetrontextremity,e,ofthe landside is divided vertically, so as to lap upon the colter F, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, the end of the landside being rounded, and the outside of colter hollowed to receive said. front part. of landside. The bolt f, passed through landside and colter, connects the two by a firm lap-joint, the colter being capable of movement about said bolt.
The colter is constructed with an arm, g, extending rearward,as shown in Fig. 1, and has in its rear extremity an inclined slot, i, in which is inserted the arm at of the rock-shaft Z, turning in box a on the side of beam A by power applied to lever 19. This lever is held in position by notches on top of cross-bar h, between the handles B B. The side r of colter rests against the mold-board and share, and makes with them a close joint without being in any way secured to either.
From the above description it will readily be seen that by moving lever 17 toward handle B arm on of shaft 1 will be moved in slot 1', pressing against the upper face of said slot, turning the colter about bolt f by lifting arm g, and consequently depressing point q of the colter. The opposite movement lifts the point. This movement of the colter is altogether independent of both mold-board and share, and is e."- fected without altering the form of either.
The mold-board, colter, and share may be coustructedof anyot' the well-known materials used for this purpose, and the details of the other parts ot'the plow may be varied in many ways, so long as the invention here claimed is not affected by such alteration.
I am aware that Harrison Norton obtained a patent, dated October 9, 1855, by which he regulated the depth of the furrow by a movable plow-point acting upon the same principle as that shown in my specification. I do not claim, therefore, to have been the lirst to invent that method of accomplishing this object; but
What 1 do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Simplyan improvement upon the invention of Norton, such as is set forth in the foregoing s1')ecitication-thatis to say, by combining with landside and mold-board a colter, F, jointed to the landside, as described, and movable between landside and mold-board independent of the mold-board and share.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name before two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE WV. ZEIGLER.
Witnesses:
GEO. PATTEN, JOHN S. HOLLINGSHEAD.
