CARRIER FOR BRAIDING MACHINES.

To all 'whom t may concern.:
Be it known that I, JOHN P. KING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Provldence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carriers for Braiding Machines, of which the following is a specification. l
This invention relates to improvements 1n the construction of carriers for braiding machines, and has for its object to provide such a carrier which is particularly adapted for running at a high velocity, being of a very strong and durable constructlon and yet light in Weight, the operating parts of the carrier being mounted to properly control the let off of the yarn or thread while running at a high rate of speed. This case 1s a continuation in part of my former abandoned case, Serial No. 347 ,278, filed Dec. 26, 1919.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Figure 7 is a view of the rear of the carrier showing the supportin projection on the bottom weight as entermg the complemental slot in the base member to support the weight against the shock of engaging and throwing the stop mechanism.
With reference to the drawings, 10 designates the base portion of the carrier, which is provided wit a longitudinal rib 11, bored at l2 for the reception of a'spindle 13 on which is rotatably mounted a yarn package carrying spool 14.
Instead of forming the wei ht-standard integral with the base member preferably provide a standard 15 formed comparatively thin sheet metal into a combined tubular and trough shape, the back of the lower portion being open or in trough shape while the upper portion of the standard is in tubular shape.
The front wall of this upper tubular portion is slotted vertically as at 16 to permit the feed-controlling finger of the latch member 1T to slide vertically therein and this standard is slotted through its side wall as at 18 to permit `this latch finger when liIted out of its guide slot to be swung on the axis of its spindle 9 to permit the removal of the package, and the rear wall of this standard is provided with a narrow slot 19 to permit the passage of the reduced portion 20 of the finger to pass therethrough when it is desired to swing this portion to the rear to drop it through this slot for the purpose of removing the latch for inspection or repa1rs. v
In this upper tubular end of the standard I have preferably mounted a phosphor bronze or anti-friction bushing 20 which is bored Aat 21 to receive the upper end of the by folding spindle 9 and also to receive a spring 22 for exerting a downward tension on the latch, the upper end of this spring being secured to the reduced neck portion of the screw 23 whereby the spring may be readily removed by simply backing `out the screw. The body of this bushing member 20 is arranged to extend down into the tubular portion of the standard below its front slot to also provide a lower bearing 24 for the latch spindle 9, and the upper portionl of this bushing above the standard is provided with a laterally-extending head 25 in which a suitable thread guide 26 is mounted.
In order to rigidly attach this standard In order to further support the lower end of this standard I have provided an upward'- ly extending boss 31 on the base which projects into the lower end of the standard to firmly support it which is of advantage particularly when the bottom weight engages thestop motion.
'lhe lower portion of this standard member is provided with laterally-extending .guide flanges 32 on which is slidably mounted the bottom yarn tensioning weight 33. This weight is also preferably formed of sheet stock having laterally-extending wings 34 folded to provide inwardly-turned lips 35 to slidably engage the iianges 32 and to also engage and operate the usual stop motion when the yarn breaks, and the upper end of this weight is provided with an inwardly-turned tongue 36 to engage the latch spindle 9 and cause the latch to function when the weight is lifted sufficiently. The lower end of this Weight is provided with a downwardly-extending finger 37 adapted to extend into the notch 38 formed in the rear of the body portion for the purpose of firmly supporting the weight member upon receiving a shock of contact with the stop motion when this weight drops into stop position, and by this construction it will be seen that the shock of engagement with the stop motion is taken by the body member instead of by the standard member as would otherwise be the case.
In order to effect a quick return action of this bottom weight after having been lifted by the thread tension during the rapid running of the carrier, l have provided a spring 39, the upper end of which is connected to the hollow stud 4() in this weight which also serves as a guide eye for the thread, while the lower end of this spring is connected to the stud 41 fixed to the standard. l
ln this standard li have provided the usual guide eye 42 which cooperates with that in the weight to lift the latter into engagement with the latch causing it to function by the tensioning of the thread, but it is found in practice where the carrier runsv very rapidly and where the thread is led directly from the package through this guide |42 to the guide eye in the weight, that the sharp upward angle of the yarn when leading from the bottom of the package, has a tendency to lift the package and so prevent its proper functioning. Therefore in order to obviate this serious difficulty l have provided a laterally-extending arm 43 on the carrier standard supporting member in which is located a guide eye 44. 'llhis auxiliary guide eye is located in the standard and offset laterally therefrom towards the delivery side of the supply package thereby eifectually reducing the angle of pull and likewise the lifting ed'ect on the package as the yarn is rapidly drawn therefrom.

Further, it will also be noted that by slotting the standard through its side wall that the latch finger when lifted from its front guide slot may rest upon the edge of this side Wall during the removal and replenishingFof the exhausted package.
he foregoing description is directed solely towards the construction illustrated, but l desire it to be understood that l reserve the privilege of resorting to all the mechanical changes to which the device is susceptible, the invention being defined and limited only by the terms of the appended claims.
ll claim:
1. ln a braider carrier, a base member, a weight-carrying standard formed of sheet metal folded into trough shape for a portion of its length with weight-guiding flanges, means for securing said standard to said base, a spring pressed latch having a feed-controlling finger and said latch having sliding bearings in 4said standard both above and below said finger, and a weight slidable on said guide flanges to engage and cause said latch to function by the tension -of the thread.
2. A braider carrier comprising a base member having a weight standard formed of sheet metal folded into trough shape for a portion of its length with guide weight flanges, a standard supporting member on said base to which said standard is secured, a latch member in said standard, and a weight slidably mounted on said flanges to engage and cause said latch vto function.
3. A braider carrier comprising a base member having av standard, a weight and a latch slidably mounted on said standard, a thread guide in said weight, a thread guide in said standard to control the lifting action of said weight upon said latch as tension is applied on the thread, and a second fixed thread-guide located below that in the standard and through which the thread is first led from the package to minimize its lifting eect on the package.
4. A braider carrier comprising a base member having a standard, a weight and a latch slidably mounted on said standard,
a thread guide in said weight, a thread guide in said standard positioned to control the lifting action of said weight upon said latch as tension is applied on the thread, and a second fixed thread guide located below that in the standard and offset laterally towards the delivery side of the supply package to reduce' the lifting effect on the package as the yarn isdrawn therefrom.
5. .A braider carrier comprising a base member having a supply package spindle7 a tubular standard supported on said base, a
latch pivotally supported to swing laterally in said tubular standard from operative to inoperative position to permit the removal of the supply package from its spindle.
6. A braider carrier comprising a base member having a supply package spindle, a tubular standard slotted through its front and one side wall, a latch having a guide pin pivotally mounted in said standard and adapted to be swung from operative position into said side slot to rest upon the wall thereof and so be retained in position to permit the removal of the supply package from its spindle. y l
7. A braider carrier comprising a base member having ai supply package mounted thereon, a hollow Weight carrymg standard being slotted in its front, side and rear Walls, a package. feed controlling latch pivotally mounted in said standard and adapted to extend through and be guided in said front `Slot when in engagement with the package and to be lifted from said front slot, swung through said side slot and dropped through said rear slot to be removed from said standard.
8. A braider carrier comprising a latch fixed to a slidable guide pin, a spring above said latch assisting it to function, in combination with a cooperating bottom weight positioned to engage and lift said pin and latch, and a spring below said Weight exerting a downward tension'thereon causing it to function in unison with said latch n after having raised the same.
9. AA braider carrien comprising a base member having a Weight standard, a feedcontrol latch operatively mounted on said standard, a tension weight slidably mounted on said standard, and cooperating interlocking means on said weight and base arranged to engage each other when the weight drops to stop position to assist in supporting the weight against the lateral thrust of the stop motion and to be lifted from such engagement when the weight rises.
10. A braider carrier comprising a base member having a Weight standard, a feed control latch operatively mounted in said standard, a tension Weight slidably mounted on said standard and having an' extending portion adapted to engage a corresponding slot in said base to support said Weight against a lateral thrust of the stop motion when the weight drops to stop position.
