Filled sem. .1923" 2 lshura-sham 2 Patented June 24, 1924.
EDWIN BOYG'E, 0F PINE BLUFF, ABK-ANSA AUTOMOBILE. SIGNAL.
Application filed September To all whom t may concer/n.:
Be it known that I, EDWIN Boron, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pine Bluff, in the county of Jefferson and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automobile Signals; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description 'of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in signals for automobiles and other vehicles, to indicate to pedestrians, crossing policemen, and drivers of otherV vehicles, what direction isto be taken by the machine.
The principal object of the invention is to provide improved means for detachably connecting the signal toits carrying and operating member, in such manner that a broken signal can be easily and quickly7 detached and a new one substituted, or a new bulb inserted.
Another object is to provide a device of the class described which, although rather simple and inexpensive, will be very desirable and will present an attractive appearance on amachine.
lith the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, the description being supplemented by the accompanying drawings.`
Fig. l is a side elevation of the invention showin front and rear signals upon an antonio ile, connected for simultaneous operation, by an arrangementV of cable and pulleys.
Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view as indicated by line 2 2 of Fig. l.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged Vside elevation partly in section.
Fig. 4 isan enlarged vertical sectional view. i
Figs. 5 and 6 are horizontal sectional views on lines 5%5 and of Fig. l.
F 7 is a side' elevation of the signal carrier.
Fig. 8 is a horizontal line 8-8 of Fig. 7.
In the drawings above briefly described, the numeral l designates a suitable bearing adapted to be secured in any desired manner to the cowl or other preferred part of an automobile. Passing rotatably through the bearing l, is a shaft 2 which is preferably sectional view on l, 1923. Serial No. 660,630.
of tubular form, to receive a socket member 3 for an electriclight bulb 4; which is within the signal 5, said signal being here -shown in the form of a globe of porcelain, glass or other'suitable material, said globe preferably having the contour of the human hand. with the index finger extended. l
The upper end of the shaft'2 is provided with an outstanding annular flange 6 which forms with` saidshaft, a carrier for the signal 5, said flange 6 being preferably provided with an upstanding annular flange 7 spaced inwardly from its edge for reception in a depending hollow neck 8 with which the signal 5 is provided, said signal being provided with an internal lug 9 for reception in an external recess l0 in the flange 7,
so that the carrier and signalY may rotate in e unison.
A retaining ring l1 surrounds the edge portion of the flange 6 and the adjacent end of the neck 8 and is provided on its lower edge, with an inwardly extending annular flange l2 which contacts with the lower side of said flange 6. The ring 8 is rotatable with respect to the carrier 2-6 and provisionl is made whereby rotation of this ring, together with axial movement of the neck 8, will -either connect the neck with the carrier or disconnect the same, as occasionl may require.
In the preferred form of construction, lthe neck 8'is provided with a plurality of circumferentially spaced external lugs 13 and the upper portion of ring ll is provided -with an internal groove 14 having entrance throats 14a, through which the lugs 13 may pass, so that turning ofthe ring 11 to the proper extent will position said lugs in said groove 13, thus firmly connecting the carrier andthe signal.
In order to hold the ring ll against accidental release and to also prevent jarring or rattling of the signal 5, I have provided a resilient transversely corrugated ring 15 which I -i'nterpose between the outer edge portion of the flange 6 and the adjacent edge of the neck 8. This'ring has a tendency'to force upwardly on the neck`n8, thus holding the lugs i12 tightly against the upper side of the groove 13 and holding the flange 12 of the ring l1 friotionally against the lower side of the flange 6.
While any suitable provision could be made for turning the shaft 2, to operate the signal 5, I prefer to secure a pulley 16 on the lower end of said shaft and to engage said pulley with an operating cable l? passing around suitable guides and operable by a suitable control t8 which inay well be located at the instrument board ot the inachine. l prefer that the cable 1'? shall operate a rear signal 19 which inay be connected with its operating shaft in the saine manner as above described, but the mount- .ing means for the rear signal shaft orins the `the details disclosed, they are preferably tol lowed, but within the scope ot the invention as claimed, numerous changes may be made.
l claiin r4 l. A device ot the 'class described'conr prising a signal carrier ot circular outline, a signal having a portion ot siniilar outline at one side oit said carrier, a retaining ring surrounding said carrier and the adH jacent portion 'ot the signal and having an inwardly extending flange contacting with the side ot' the oriner reinote troni the latter, said ring and signal having coa/citing connecting ineans engageable and releasable by relative axial and turning movements, and yielding means interposed between said signal and carrier and tending to torce theni away troni each other to trictionally hold said retaining ring and signal against relative turning.
2. A device ot the class described coin prising a signal carrier ot circular outline, a signal. having` a portion of siinilar outline at one side of said carrier, a retaining ri surrounding said carrier and the adjgacent portion of theV signal and having inwardly extending vflange contacting with the side ot the toriner remote troni the lat ter, said rino' and signalhaving` coacting connecting ineans engageable and releasable by relative axial and turning movements, and a resilient corrugated ring interposed between said signal and carrier and tending to torce thein away troni each other to trictionallyhold said retaining ringl and signal against relative turning,
3; A' device ot theY class described cornprising a signal carrier having a circular socket, signal having a circular portion reocltet, said socket and sigiA ceac ing connecting ineans eneable and releasable by relative axial and nioveinents,0 and a resilient corrie ri nterposed between and yieldably tacting with the soclret bottoni and the adjacent portion ot the signal to hold then against accidental relative turning.
t. A device of the class described c prising a structure as specified in claiin l; said carrier being rotatable, and enacting ineans on the' carrier and signal tor connecting thein lo turn as a single unit.
A device of the class described coinprising a rotatable signal carrier having 'i ular outline and having a circular tiange at one side spaced inwardly 'from its edge; said Vflange being provided. with a peripl eral recess, a signal having a circular .neck surrounding said flange and provided with an vinternal lug received in said recess to "f connect' the carrier and signal for rotation as a single unit, and ineans tor holding said signal and carrierin assembled relation.
G. A, device ot the class described coniprising a rotatable signal carrier having a circular outline and havin@ a circular 'Flange at cne side spaced inwardly troni its edge, said flange being provided with a peripheral recessIn a signal having a circular necla siu'roiniding said flange and provided with an internal lug received in said recess to connect the carrier and ,signa-l tor rotation as a single unit, the exterior ot said neck having circiunterentially spaced lugs, and a retaining ring surrounding said carrier and and having an inwardly extending engaging said carrier, said ring beorined with an internal groove receivv said spaced lugs and with entrance throats to said groove .7, As an article of manufacture, a signal lobe adapted to contain an electric bulbw globe having a o lovv neck adapted 5 ing socket, said neclr i h circuinterentially on its outer side tor Af.@agement with the socket,
8. n article of inanutacture as specitied in claim 7: together with an additional lug on the inner side of said neck, ter the purpose set forth. e
