UNIT D stares PATENT oaaica.
GEORGE E. STEPHENS, OF SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGl\TOR OF ONE-HALF TO EUGENE TWEED, OFSAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA.
ATTACHMENT FOR HEADLIGHTS.
Application filed February 28 1923. Serial No. 621,887.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. STEPHENS, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Headlights, of which the following is a specification? This invention relates to motor vehicle headlamps and has particular applicatlon to an attachment therefor, designed to add'to the attractiveness and 'ornamentality of the headlamps, but being primarily intended as a medium by means of which the driver of the vehicle is informed when either of the headlamps is casually extinguished.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detailed description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of. parts as claimed.
In the drawings forming part of this application like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and
. wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a headlamp showing the attachment associated therewith. s
Figure 2 is a sectional view through the lamp and attachment. 5
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the attachment.
Referring to the drawin in detail 10 indicates the body of the hea lamp such as are used on automobiles and in which body is arranged a reflector 11 having associated therewith an electric light bulb 12, the reflector is spaced an appreciable distance from the body 10 of the lamp and the attachment shown in Figure 3 is connected with said body.
The body is provided with an opening for the reception of the attachment, which consists of a cup shaped member 13 one end of which is closed by a transparent element 14. This element is preferably in the nature of a glass lens which is suitably colored so that the light rays from the lamp will not in any way affect the vision of the driver. In addition to being suitably colored for this purpose the lens 14 is provided with a monogram or design of any suitable character which-adds to the attractiveness and ornamentality of the headlamps proper. When the attachment is associated with the lamp, the light rays are directed against the lens 14 through an opening 15 in the reflector l1, and inasmuch as the attachment is arranged so that it can be readily seen b'ythe driver of the vehicle, as a means for notifying the driver that one or the other of the headlamps is extinguished.
The body portion of the attachment is passed through an opening in the lamp casing as illustrated, and held associated therewith in any suitable-manner. This body portion is preferably threaded as at 17 and has associated therewith a lock nut 18. When the nut is tightened, the flange 19 surrounding the lens 14 bears against the outer surface of the casing as illustrated.
It is of course to be understood that while the attachment is shown and referred to as a cup shaped member, it may be varied in shape and size, and otherwisev dealt with to increase its ornamental features without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Whi c it is believed that from the foregoing description, the nature and advan tages of the invention will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to what is herein shown and described and that such changes may be re sorted to when desired as fall within the sctipe of what is claimed.
aving thus described the invention, I
claim:
As an article of manufacture, a headlamp attachment comprising a hollow tubular member exterior] threaded and adapted to be passed through an opening formed in a lamp casing, an annular flan e formed on one end of said member and adapted to contact the outer surface of the casing, a nut threaded and adapted to be tightened thereon until it bears against the inner surface of said casing, whereby the tubular member is held detachably associated with the lamp casing, and a transparent disk arranged within the tubular member and lying substantially in a plane with the lamp casing.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
GEORGE E. STEPHENS.
it is specially advantageous
