BUMPER.
Application filed September 21, 1923. Serial No. 664,110.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CARL GEn'rz EIN, a subject of the King of Great Brltain, and resident-of the city of Toronto, county of York, Province of Ontario, in the Domimon of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bumpers, as described in the following specificatiolrand illustrated in the accompanying drawings,
that form part of the same.
The principal objects of this invention are to devise a structure which will be extremely resilient and will be capable of absorbing extraordinary shocks, affording extraordinary fitted.
A further object is to devise a strong and durable structure which may be produced at low cost.
The principal feature of the invention consists in supporting the bumper bar on vertically disposed toggles and arranging 'strong springs to hold the toggles extended and to receive and absorb the shocks of im act.

In the construction of bumper herein illustratedrigid bracket members 1 adapted to be secured to the frame of the car, are each formed with a vertical slot 2 arranged behind a cup-shaped portion 3. The forplan view of the unit shown 7 ward side of the slot is sloped upwardly and downwardly in a forward direction from the horizontal axis of the cup which presents a horizontal V-shaped bearing.
A pair of flat bars 4 and 5 are pivotally mounted on a bolt 6 extending transversely through the slotted portion of the bracket, said bolt cutting the axial line of the cup so that the edges of the bars rest upon the sloped surfaces 7 and 8 respectively of the slot. The bars project forwardly from the bracket and are of e ual length.
A cup member 12 of corresponding shape to the cup portion 3 of the bracketl, and formed with a similar vertical slot, embraces the forward ends of the bars 9 and 10 and is secured by the bolt11 which passes transversely therethrough on the axial line of the cup.
A toggle member is thus formed which will contract and expand freely.

In the use of the device, the toggle. membersare secured to the forward ends of the car frame and the springs hold the whole structure rigid and free from rattle. In the event of the bumper bars engaging an obstruction the springs will be compressed and the toggle bars pivoting on their pivotal connections will fold easily without resistance and immediately the pressure is removed the springs resume their normal shape and the toggles extend.
A device socon'structed is extremely flexible and will not bind in operationand will present an increasing resistance to any impact as the springs compress. It also presents a pleasing appearance on the front of a car. 1
