To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLEs J. TRAVERS, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Port Washington, in the county of 022111- kee, and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in (hair Irons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
The invention relates to chair irons and more particularly to that type on which Paten-t No. 1,332,402, was granted on March 2, 1920, to Claus O. Krabol.
Among the various features of improvement is a modification of the clamps that grip the legs. These are provided with lugs depressed from the clamps and operating when the clamps are in interlocked position to prevent the fingers of the clamps which result from longitudinal slots, from being laterally deflected. These lugs are few in number, simple, easy to make, and have the primary object of giving great strength to the clamps, so that for a minimum' of weight of parts and an especial thinness of metal, a more durable clamping action on the legs is produced.
The invention also contemplates a modification of the bottom plate, whereby a plurality of bosses are produced by depressing the metal, the bosses being apertured and receiving the screws by which the plate is secured to the legs.
An object of the boss structure is strength, lateral movement of a leg with respect to the plate being prevented. The head of the screw being received in the bosses, a substantially smooth lower surface is produced, so that there are no projecting edges. Four ofthe bosses are adapted to be received between flanges of the clamps. This is efiective to prevent relative movement between the clamps and the plate, as this movement could not result unless the clamps rode up on the surface of the bosses.
Other objects of the improved structures are simplicity of parts, of which there is a minimum number. The spindle barrel common in the prior art isunnecessary in the novel construction, the screw on which the chair is supported being received by and rotatable among the clamps which are deformed in such manner that when interlocked, they provide What is substantially a cylinder. The clamps are cut away adjacent their top edge and the top plate is provided with a downwardly directed flange resting on the cut away edges. 2 The clamps rest upon the bottom plate so that the struc tu re is exceedingly simple.
With the above and other objects inview which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter described Figure 1 shows a plan view of the invention. I

Figure l is a horizontal section. Figures 5 and 6 are details of clamps. Bottom plate 10 is substantially of disk like shape, but apertured centrally and provided with radialarms 11, at theend of which are upwardly directed apertured bosses 12, thru which screws 13 are directed into legs 14 of the chair. The bottom plate is also provided with bosses 15, apertured for the reception of screws 16. Clamps 17-17"have slots 18 therein, so that fingers 19, 20 and 21 are produced. Clamps 22-22 are somewhat similar to clamp 17 but are provided with slots 23 and 24 in the lower part thereof, producing fingers 25, 26 and 27. Each of the clamps has a laterally directed flange 28. Clamps 17-17 are provided with lugs 2929', which are depressed from. the metal and clamps 22-22 are provided with lugs 3030. The clamps are assembled in the manner directed in the above identified patent, and fingers 19 and 21 contact with lugs 30-430 and are prevented, thereby, from outward movement. Fingers 25 and 27 are likewise prevented from out ward lateral movement by lugs 29-29. Thus an effective rigid structureis provided.
The clamps are provided with longitudinal central deformations 31 which are adapted to receive a .screw supporting the chair. The structure is designed to eliminate all need for a spindle barrel or hub, which in the prior art was provided to encase the screw.
It will be noted that flanges 28 contact with bosses 15. The bosses function therei ioregto prevent relative movement between bottom. plate 10 and the clamps, as such movement walla" necessitate the riding up cf iflanges 28 .on-bosses l5,
Clamps I'l -17, 22--22 are .cut away adjacent their top edges, and an annular flange 32 is downwardly directed from top plate 33-, and'contacts' with the curved central portions of the clamps. 1. The combination of a pair of parallel clamps, each of said clamps having a pair of slots therein whereby three fingers are formed on each of said clamps, second pair of oppositely disposed clamps each having a pair "of parallel slots therein, whereby three fingers are formed on each of said last mentioned clamps, said last mentioned-pair ofclamps being disposed at right angles to said first mentioned pair of clamps and litting in the slots of said first mentioned pair of clamps, said first mentioned pair or clamps fitting in the slots of said lastin'entioned pair of clamps, whereby all of said. clamps are in interlocked relationship, a pair of lugs 'on'ithe outer face of each of said clamps, adjacent the outer fingers of the other clamps, said lugs being outwardly disposed with respect to said fingers, and
immediately adjacent thereto and preventing out-ward movement of said fingers.
2. Ina chair iron, the combination of a plurality of interlocking clamps, each of said clamps being cut away centrally along its top edge and a top plate having a central opening therein and a central annular depending fiange resting on said clamps along their cut away portion.

In a chair iron, the combination of a plurality of interlocking clamps, each of said clamps being longitudinally deformed centrally and cut away oei'itrally to form a surface conforming to a central cylindrical bore alongv its top edge, and a top plate having a central annular depending flange contacting with the central cut away edges of said clamps;

The combination of a pair of oppositely disposed clamps, each having a pair of slots therein forming a central finger and an outer finger on each side of said central finger, a second pair of oppositely disposed clamps, each having .a pair of slots therein forming a'central finger and an outer finger on each side of said central finger, said secmd ,pair of clamps being received within the slots of said first mentioned pair of clamps and extending at right angles to said first mentioned pair of clamps, said first n'ientijoned pair or clamps lying in the slots of said second mentioned pair of clamps whereby all of said clamps are in interlocked relationship, a longitudinal tlange inwardly directed from the side edges of each of said clamps, a base plate, a plu rality of bosses thereon, each of said bosses being received between a pair of flanges on said clamps.
