for applying caps to bottles, though it is not limited thereto. l
My primary object is to provide a simplified construction of device of the character above stated which may be manufactured economically, and will operate to a highdef` gree of satisfaction.
Referring to the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a capping device constructed in accordance with my invention. Figure `2 is a similar view of the device viewing it .from the right hand side of Fig. 1; and liigure 3, a section taken at the line 3;-3 on Fig. 1y and viewed in the direction of the arrows.
The particular illustrated embodiment of my invention involves a base member, represented at 1, which is preferably formed of sheet metal to afford the plate-like section 5 at which the device is adapted to bear upon the support to which the capper would be applied, thepl'ate portion 5 being provided at one edge with an upstauding rib 6 and at its edges angularly disposed. thereto` with upwardly-extending side portions 7 having flanges 8 which extend directly alcove the rib 6, the portions 6 and 7 cooperating with each other to providey a durable construction of base. The device also comprises an upright represented generally at 9 and provided alongits inner edge with teeth 1() constituting a rack.y The upright 9 is shown as formed of a pair of similar bars 11 presenting at their upper ends the tlat portions 12 which tlatwise oppose each other and at which the bars are secured together as through the medium of the `rivets 13, the teeth 10 being formed in the edges of the double bar construction thus provided. Below the flattened portions 12, the bars 1 1 diverge outwardh7 at ,the portions indicated at 14, their lower extremities. represented at 15, being substantially"parallel and located Awithin the space between the side portiona-`7e1s7 which latter they atwae opiiose as shown. rThe upright 9 is shown as riveted, at the lower extremitiesof its portions 15,'to the sidemember 7, as represented at 16, which may afford a pivotal mounting for theupright 9 if desired, and is rigidly secured to the side members, at points above the rivets 16, as by bolt devices 17. It may be here stated that the particular construction of the base plate, the upright and the means connecting these parts together, are not material to my present invention.

rlhe raclr 10 cooperates with a gear segment, represented at 23, which is shown as carried on the end of a hand-operated lever 24, this gear segment being located between the side walls 19 and pivotally connected therewith, as through the means of the pivot represented at 25 and which may be a rivet or any other suitable pivoting means,the teeth-of the segment 23 meshing with the rack 10. Y In this connection it` may be stated that the parts described are so constructed and arranged that by swinging the lever 24 in clockwise direction to a certain position from. that shown in Fig. 1, ythe teeth of the segment. 23 will be out of mesh with the rack teeth 10, permit-ting the slide 18 to be adliusted on the rack to any desired position, or removed therefrom' if desired. i
The slider 18 is provided with a bottleclosure-engaging portion iprovided, in the particular arrangement shown, for receiving a metal cap to be applied and securedv to the mouth of a bottle. `It will .be noted that by constructing the slide as shown and above described, the minimum number of fastening devices is required, which"reduces` to the minimum theicost of producing the device, while causing the latter to present the desired strength and the desired functioning'.
Another feature of the construction described is that of so 'proportioning the various parts thereof that regardless of the position to which the slide 18 may be depressed on the"upright, the slide will not become wedged thereupon, as the lower edge of the slide 18 does not, in any position thereof while the gear segment 28 is .in mesh with the rack 10, lower to the point where the deflected portions 14 join the flat portions 11.

2. In a bottle-closure-applying device, the combination of a rack-bar, a slide on said bar and provided with a. 'bottle-closure-en-- gaging part, and a toothed member pivotefl on said slide and engaging the teethof said bar, said slide being formed with side-walls spaced apart and an end wall connecting said side-walls at one end of said slide, and at its end-wall portion straddling 'said rack-bar, said side-walls being deflected in wardly between their lateral edges substantially throughout their height to forma guide channel in which said bafr veXtends, said side walls at their points of deflection extending opposite the 'face of the teeth of said rack-bar, and said toothed member being located between said side-walls with its toothed portion of less thicknessthan the thickest portion of said rack bar.v
3. ln a bottle-closure-applying device, the combination of arack-bar, a slide on said bar and provided with a `bottle-closure-engaging part, and a toothed member pivoted on said slide and engaging the teeth ot' said bar, said slide being formed with side walls spaced apart and an end wall' connecting said side-walls at one end of' said slide, and at its end-wall portion straddling said rack-bar, said side-walls being deflected inwardly between their lateral edges rsubstantially throughout their height to form a guide channel in which said bar extends, said side walls at their points ot dcflection extending opposite the face of the teeth of said rack-bar. the side-walls at the opposite edge oil said slide being spaced closer together, and said toothed member being of less thickness than said` rack-bar and located between said lastereferred-to portions of said side-walls.
4. In a bottle-closure-applyingYdevice, the combination of a rack-bar. a slide on said bar and provided with a bottle-closure-engaging part, and a toothed member pivoted on said slide and engaging the teeth of said bar, said slide being formed with side-walls spaced apart Vand an'end wall connecting said side-walls at one end of said slide, and at its end-wall portion straddling said rackbar, said side-walls being deflected inwardly between their lateral edges substantially throughout their height to form a guide channel in which saidbar extends, said side bar and said toothed member being located between said side-walls with its toothed portion of less thickness than the thickest portion of said rack-bar, said pivoting means having portions preventing said side-walls from spreading.

In a bottle-closeure-applying device, the combination of a rack-bar, a slide on said bar and provided with a bottle-closureengaging part, a toothed member pivoted on said slide and engaging the teeth ot said bar, said slide being formed with. sidewalls spaced apart and an end wall connecting said side-walls at one end of said slide, and at its end-wall portion straddling said rack-bar, said side-walls being deiiected inwardly between their lateral edges to form a guide channel in which said bar extends, and said toothed member being located between said side-walls with its toothed portion of less thickness than the thickest portion of said rack-bar, said deflected portions being located at opposite sides of said toothed member and tlatwise opposing the opposite sides of the latter and also opposing the face of the teeth thereon, said pivoting means having portions preventing said side-walls from spreading, said bottle-closure-engaging part being separate from said side-walls, and means connecting said part to said side-walls and preventing spreading of the latter.
6. In a bottle-closnre-applying device, the combination of a rack-bar, a slide on said bar and provided with a bottle-closnre-engaging part, a toothed member pivoted on` said slide and engaging the teeth of said bar, said slide being formed with side-walls spaced apart and an end wall connecting said side-walls at one end of said slide, and at its end-wall portion straddling said rack-bar, said sidewalls being deflected inwardly between their lateral edges substantially throughout theirheight to form a guide channel in which said bar extends, said side walls at their points of deiiection extending opposite the face of the teeth ot said rack-bar, and said pivoting means hav# ing portions preventing said side walls from spreading, said bottle-closure-engaging part being separate from said side walls, and
means connecting said partto said side walls and preventing spreading of the latter.
7. lin a bottle-closure-applying device, the combination of a rack-bar, a slide on said bar provided with laterally-extending lugs, a bottle closure engaging member' bearing against said lugs, means engaging said lugs and member tor fastening said member to said lugs, and a toothed member pivoted on said slide above said first-named member and engaging the teeth of said bar, said slide being formed with side-walls spaced apart and ,an end wall connecting said side-walls at one end of said slide, and at its end-wall portion straddling said rack-bar, said sidewalls being deiected inwardly between their lateral edges to form a guide channel in which said bar extends, andsaid toothed member being located between said side-walls with itstoothed pori tion ot less thickness than the thickest portion'of said rack-bar, said deflected portions being located at opposite sides of said toothed member and tiatwise opposing the opposite sides ot' the latter and also opposing the tace oit the teeth thereon.
8. ln a bottle-closure-applying device,
