UNITED STATES rREDEnrc K. HEYER, or STAMFORD, oo nnncrrour, ASSIGNOR T0 'rnnjrnnn & 'rowivn MANUFACTURING COMPANY,
OF STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT.
cYLIivnnR LOCK.
Application filed May 29,
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, FREDERIO K. HEYER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cylinder Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in cylinder. locks,-one object of "the invention being to so construct a cylinder lockthat the useof separate springs for the several tumblers shall be obviated and so that all the tumblers shall be pressed by the operation of spring means common to them all.
A further object is to so construct a cylinder lock of the pin tumbler type that all the tumblers and their drivers shall be maintained normally in locked position by the action of a single spring.
A further object is to so construct a pin tumbler lock that two sets of drivers and a single set of tumblers shall be employed, one set of drivers being located behind the tumblers and the other set being located in front of the tumblers at the side of the key-way opposite the tumblers, and to provide a single spring operable to apply pressure to both sets of drivers and the pin tumblers.
l/Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a front view ofa lock in which my improvements are embodied.
Figure 2 is a view in side elevation.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view.
Figure 4 is a rear view.
Figure 5 is a transverse sectional view.
Figure 6 is a longitudinal sectional view of the lock cylinder.
Figure 7 is a view in side elevation of the plug, and
Figure 8 is a transverse sectional View of the plug.
The cylinder of the lock is represented at 1 and the plug at 2. The cylinder is reduced in diameter exteriorly throughout its intermediate portion whereby rims or heads 34 are formed at its respective ends and 1923. Serial No. 642,252.
the intermediate portion of the'cylinder between said heads isprovided with diamet rically opposite longitudinal slots 5'6.
I A plurality of pin tumblers 7 are arranged to enter the plug and each of these tumblers is preferably made square in crosssection. and provided with approximately V-shaped key-engaging ends 8. A. plurality of drivers 9 are located behind the pin tumblers and are also square in cross-section. The engagingportions of the drivers 9 and tumblers 7 may, if desired, be rounded as clearly shown in Figures 3 and 5. Another set of drivers 10 islocated inthe cylinder at the side of the key opening of the plug opposite the tumblers.
A strip or bar 11 is loosely disposed in the slot 5 of the cylinder in alignment with the several drivers 9 and a similar strip or bar 12is loosely disposed in the slot 6 in alignment with the drivers 10. A coiled spring 13 encircles the cylinder between the heads or rims 3 and 4t and serves to apply 1 pressure to the two strips or bars 11 and 12 and hence to both sets of drivers and the "pin tumblers.
In order to facilitate the placing of the coil spring in position on the cylinder, the rim or head 4 maybe provided with a dia onal slot 14.
ith the use of my improvements, I am enabled to avoid the necessity of providing separate springs for the various drivers and tumblers and to apply pressure to all of the same by means. of a single spring,-
said spring bearing against the strips or with the several drivers, and a spring car.-
ried by the cylinder and operable to apply pressure to said strip and through the same to said drivers. I
2. In a cylinder lock, the combination Q a i 1,498,035
of a eylinder having an elongated slot and provided with heads at respective ends of said slot, a key plug mounted in the cylinder, tumblers movable in said plug, drivers to engage said tumblers, said drivers being in line with the elongated slot in the cylinder, a strip movable in said slot, and a spring encircling the cylinder and operable to apply pressure to said strip and the drivers. 1
3. In a cylinder lock, the combination of a cylinder having diametrically opposite longitudinal slots, a plug, tumblers movable in said plug, a set of drivers behind said tumblers, a set of drivers opposite the keyengaging ends of said tumblers, strips movable in the elongated slots of the cylinder and common respectively to the drivers of the two sets, and a spring encircling the cylinder and operable to apply pressure to both of said strips.
i. In a cylinder lock, the combination of a cylinder having an elongated slot, a plug,
pin tumblers, drivers for the pin tumblers, a strip movable in said elongated slot and in line with the several drivers, and a spring operable to apply pressure to said strip.
5.111 a cylinder lock, the combination with a cylinder and plug, of a plurality of tumblers, each angular in cross-section and having a reduced key-engaging end, a plurality of drivers for said tumblers, each of said drivers being angular in cross-section, and spring pressure means for said drivers.
6. In a cylinder lock, the combination of a cylinder having an elongated slot and provided at respective ends with a head, one of said heads having a transverse slot, a plug, tumblers, driving means for the tumblers, a strip movable in the elongated slot in the cylinder and cooperable with the tumbler driving means, and a spring insertable through the transverse slot in one of the cylinder heads and encircling the ylinder between said heads, said spring engaging said strip.
1 In testimony whereof, I have signed this x specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
