To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that WeflV'ILiJAM T. HALM and TYKO E. HELLBERG, citizens of the Republic of Finland, of Syracu'se,.in' the county of Onondaga, inthe State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sleds, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to sleds for coasting purposes.
Oneobject of the invention is to accommodate a passenger, and an operator, the operator at all times having free use of one of the limbs for the purpose of propelling the sled when necessary.
A further object is .to provide the sled with an improved brake, and a controlling handle therefor, so positioned as to be ac cessible of the operator.
A still further object is the production of a sled of the character described, which is simple in construction, efficient in operation, and consists of a minimum number of parts.
With these and other objects in view, this invention consists of certain novel con struction, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved device.
Figure 2 is a rear elevation of the same.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal section of a portion of the same.
Referring to the parts by reference numerals 10 designates the runners, the same being turned up at the front and have extending rearwardly thereof scat braces 11. Connecting the runners at. the front end is a cross piece 12. Posts 13 are provided the same being connected to the runners at approximately intermediate the length thereof by the plates 14, which are secured to the sides of the wedge shaped lower ends 15 of the posts 13 and in turn connected to the runners 10.
It is to be noted that the posts 13 which form the back of the chair provided with this device are disposed at a suitable inclination. A brace 16 connects the posts 13 at the upper ends thereof and a second brace 17 is provided adjacent the-upper ends. A second pair of posts 18 are carried by the runners 10 forward of the connecting point of assess: is earths Selenaer asa the portions 20 for the braces 11. The said portions 20 having at their rear ends angularly disposed pieces 21 which are connected to the posts 13 by any suitable means. Arm rests 22 are provided and the same each carrying an eye 23 which are adapted to receive suitable spring catches which are secured to a strip 24 to be used in connection with the chair when the occupant thereof is a child. A suitable foot rest 25 is carried by the post 18 and supporting rods 26 are provided on the braces 11 for an obvious purpose.
A brake means is provided with this device, the same comprising substantially inverted V-shaped operating frame comprising a handle 27 at the upper end thereof, curved arms 28 extending from the end of said handle and terminating in portions 29 which are slidable in the eyes 30 carried by the posts 13. It is to be noted that the curved arms 28 of the frame above referred to pass through suitable slots formed in the brace 17 to retain the handle 27 of the frame in close proximity with the uppermost brace 16. Ground engaging dogs 31 are pivotally carried by the posts 13 adjacent the lower ends thereof, and suitable rods 32 connect the portions 29 of the operating frame with the dogs 31 whereby upward movement of the operating frame will move the dogs 31 to engagement with the ground for the described purpose.
In operation it is obvious that passengers can be carried and the operator assumes a position to the rear of the post 13 with his left foot positioned on the foot rest 33 secured to one of the runners 10 and therefore the right limb is free to be used in propelling the sled. Obviously the operator will grip the upper brace 16 which will also act as a handle, and when it is wished to apply the brake, all that is necessary is to move the operating handle 27 of the frame upwardly to swing the dogs 31 to engage the ground.
It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of this invention without departing from the material parts thereof. It is 7 therefore not wished to confine the invention to the exact Zform herein shown and described, but it openings in said brace and terminating in 20 is wished it {include all suc Eipijbprlj parallel extending pieces passing through come Within the scope claimed. saideffesbarried by said posts and connect- What We claim is: ing rods on said parallelly extending pieces 5 A sled inc'ludingia'pair'ofspaced runners and in connection with saidground engagand posts carried thereby, a brake m @113 ing members as and for the purpose set 25 therefor, including a; pair of ground engagforth.
