Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,770, dated April 14, 1874'; application led n September 11, 1873. v
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN MAY, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Chio, have in vented a new and useful Window-Screen, of which the following is a specification:
The nature and objects of this invention are as follows My invention consists essentially of ya canvas or other screen adapted to be of the same, the screen being partly raised.-

A may represent the sill, B B' the jambs, and C the lintel, of a window-frame. Projecting interiorly from the jambs, near their upper part, are two brackets, D D', preferably of metal, which brackets have curbs or flanges d. These brackets receive the ends of a wooden rail, E, to which the upper end of the screen or blind F is suitably tacked. Cords or wires G G', whose lower ends are seA cured to eyes H H', attached to the sill or to the lower part of the jambs, and whose upper ends are secured to rings I I', that depend from the said rail near the ends thereof, are rove through loops or rings J, that project from the screen. Cords K K', attached to the two lowest loops, are carried upward through the rings I I', thence through a ring, L, depending from the middle of the rail, and thence descend, so as to be capable of bein g easily reached by the operator, and of being secured to a hook, M, that projects from the sill.
The operation of my screen is as follows: On the approach of warm weather, it being' desired to apply the screen, the same is suspended in its place within the window-frame by Simply resting its rail E in the curbed brackets D D'. The guide-cords G G' are then rove through the loops J and attached by their respective ends to the eyes H H' and rings I I', and the cords K K' being attached and rove, as above explained, the device is ready for use.
Vhen desired to act with its full effect, the elevating-cords K K' are simply liberated or sufficiently slackened to permit the curtain to drop to its full extent, and to thus completely shield the window from the suns rays.
Vhen desired to be partially or wholly raised, the cords K K' are drawn down for that purpose, and are secured to the hook M.
I claim as new and of my invention- The rail E, removably secured to the curbed brackets D D' on the jambs B B', and supporting the screen F, center guide L, and side guides I I', in combination with the guidecords G G', attached below to the eyes H H', and above-to the side guides I I', and with the cords K K' passing through the center guide L and the side guides I I', and attached to the screen, all constructed and operating as set forth.
