E. M. GRUEN CLASP FOR SANITARY BELTS lFiled Sept 15 ATTORNEYS Patented J une 17, 1924.
UNITED STATES EDGAR M. GRUB-N, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CLASP FOR SANITARY BELTS.
Application led September 15, 1923. Serial No. 662,901.
To all whom t may con-cem.'
Be it known that l, EDGAR M. GRUEN, a citizen ot the United States, and resident of the borough of the Bronx, in the county of Bronx, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clasps for Sanitary Belts7 of which the 'following is a specification.
.The main object of this invention is to provide an etlective clasp ot simple con-- struction readily operable to clasp the reduced end of a sanitary pad or napkin.
A further object of the invention is to provide a claspv that may be quickly operf atedto release the pad by an outward pull on the end of the pad.
A clasp constructed in accordance with this invention while especially adapted for the use herein indicated., may be used for many purposes, for instance, as a garment supporter and for other like uses. l
The invention is designed particularly for use with the well known KoteX pads, but of course, it is lcapable of use with any form of pad or napkin having soit or reduced ends adapted to be grasped firmly f between the clasp members.
In the drawing:
Fig. l is a front view of the device showing one end of a pad V.secured thereto;
Fig. 2, a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 a perspective view of the clasp open and detached from the holding'belt; Fig. 4 a view similar to Fig. 3 showing clasp in closed or gripping position;
Fig. 5 a. vertical longitudinal sectional view of the clasp in open or released position, and taken approximately on the line 5 5 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 6 a vertical sectional view similar to Fig. 2, showing the manner of releasing the clasp by an outward pull on the ends of the clasped fabric element;
7 a transverse sectional view taken on theV line 7-7 7of Fig. 2;
Fig. 8 a transverse sectional view taken on the line 8?-8 of Fig. 6; and
9 a transverse sectional view taken on fthe line 9 9 of Fig. 6.
Referring to the various parts by numerals, 1 designates the lower portion of a belt of any desired form. To this belt is,
secured a i depending fabric tape 2' to the lewer` end of {whichkthe' clasp is' connected. 1The clas'piconsists of a body`A part 3 and a tubular clamping slide 4 mounted on the body part and arranged to move longitudinally up and down thereon.
The body part of the clasp is formed of a comparatively narrow plate of sheet metal having a slot 5 near its upper end to receive the tape 2, said slot having a-lower contracted part 6 adapted to receive a look-. ing tongue formed on the upper endof the clamping slide, as will be described hereinafter. .-1 suitable distance Jfrom itsflower or .tree end the plate 3 is formed with. a mouth 7 which is in the form of a transverse slot extending inwardly and trans-` versely ot the plate 3 from the lefthand edge, as shown clearly in F`ig..3.Y This slotr separates the clasp head 8 from the body ot' the plate'.` said head being connected to. the plate 3 by a resilient neck 9 at theright hand edge of the plate, the inner edge olfA said neck forming the inner wall of the mouth?. @ne of the functionsl of thisv resilient neck is to permit the head to yield or flex laterally when the clamping slide is forced into or out of clamping position, as will be described. A portion of the .plate 3, along the upper margin of the mouth 7 is bent forwardly to form a stop Harige 110, said iiange extending transversely of the plate 3. This flange is cut away and rounded at its outer or lett hand corner 11 to permit the clamping slide to swing later-v ally with the head 3. The side .edges .of the head are formed with forwardly extending longitudinal flanges 12 and 13. The flange 13 extends alongthe outeror right hand edge of the neck 9 to strengthen the neck and prevent it being bent or deformed either forward or rearward. These flanges form a channel in which the material to be clamped may be conveniently arranged and also serve as guides for the clamping slide. The upper edge olf the head 8, which forms the lower margin of the mouth 7, is serrated or toothed, as shown. to securely hold the: fabric clamped over the head. The head 8 is dished or bulged forwardly between the.
flanges l2 and 13 to forni thehollowor concave back part 14C and the convex for:-.
The clamping slide is open ended and A tubular and `slides.readily longitudinally ol the plate 3 and over tlieflanges 12 and 13. tis et `'suflieientlength tosulistaiitially enclose saidflanges and the head The upper edge ofthe forward wallof the slide isspiovided. with an upwardly extending loekingtongue 19'wliose free end is bent inwarfflly. toerigage aiidiide on the forward face of 'the plate 3' above the mouth T. The looking tongue V1 9 is adapted to ent-er the part-.16 otthefslot. 5to hold .the slide in its V.released position. as shown in Figs. 3 and e.

As the tongue 1S) is forced over the ridge 17 the head will be slightly twisted about the neck 9. The stop llange Il). when ellgaged by the tongue 19. limits the downward or elanipiiig' movement of the slide l.
rl`he lotex pad or other vfabritI :irtiele` isreleased from the clasp by moriug the Clamping slide up on the plate 3. This may he done readily by pulling outwardly on tlieends of the fabric, as illustrated iii Fig. 6.. The outward pull of the fabi-ie results in an upward `thrust on the slide vl. 'the upward movement of the slide causes the tongue lil lo rite over the loeling ridge 1T and the slid-e and the head S will be twisted laterally precisely as when foreing the slide into elainlgiing position. Figs lf. 3 and 9 illustrate the lateral twisting oi the slide and the head duringthe nioremeiit oi' the tongue 19 over the ridge 1T both in the clamping and in the releasing movement ot the slide.
When the slide is in its released position` with the tongue 19 in the part Gol slot 5. the
lower edge of the slide =will rest on the stop flange, as shown in Fig.
