UNITED STATES PATENT ()rrron.
CYRUS D. GORDON, OF FOND DU LAC, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO J HENRY MGNEEL, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPARK-EXTINGUISHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,742, dated April 14, 1874; application filed February 28, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CYRUS D. GORDON, of Fond du Lac, in the county of Fond du Lac and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Spark-Extinguishers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a representation of a top view of my spark-extinguisher. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view.
This invention has relation to spark-extinguishers and draft-producers for the smokestacks of stationary and .portable furnaces. It consists in the novel combination of a propellin g-wheel, fan-wheel, and fixed radial arms,
and in an adjustable sleeve, in combination with an exhaust-pipe and a propelling-wheel, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawings, A designates a smoke-stack, and B the upper end of a pipe leading from the exhaust-port of an engine, and arranged centrally in the smoke-stack, in which position this exhaust-pipe may be held by means of radial rods 0. (Shown in Fig. 2.) On the upper end of this pipe B a sleeve, C, is applied, which is vertically adjustable, for
a purpose hereinafter explained. C designates a propeller-wheel, which is composed of a number of feathered blades securedto a central vertical shaft, D, and rotated by the force of the exhaust steam impinging against itsblades. At a suitable distance above the propellerwheel C, and secured to the shaft D, is a hub, E, from which radiate a number of arms, (I, carrying on their ends feathered blades a, which arms at are endwise adjustable by means of set-screws b, tapped into the said hub E'. The diameter of this fan-wheel F can thus be increased or diminished, as circumstances may require. The upper end of the shaft D has its bearing in the hub g ofseveral radial blades, G, the outer ends of which are secured to the stack A. The broad sides of these blades stand vertically, and they are arranged in such relation to the fan-blades a that the upwardlyflying sparks are forcibly directed against them, and not only extinguished, but reduced to powder. These blades G ,also check the whirling motion given to the smoke, and direct it upward in a straight course. The sleeve C on the upper end of the exhaust-pipe B is vertically adjustable, as above stated, and it can be fixed at any desired point of adjustment by a set-screw or other suitable contrivance. This feature of my invention is very important-for instance, in a slow-running engine, or with an engine carrying low steam, the said sleeve must be raised above the highest point of the propellin g-wheel C, for the purpose of concentrating all the force of the escaping exhaust steam upon the propellingwheel C.
By lowering the sleeve C the propellingwheel is relieved from the great force of the steam, and the speed of the fan-wheel can be regulated to the work which it is required to perform.
l/Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the propeller-wheel C, the fan -wheel F, and the fixed radial blades G, as and for the purpose mentioned.
2. The adjustable sleeve C, combinedwith the propelling wheel C and exhaust pipe B, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
CYRUS D. GORDON.
