WALTER REGINALD HORSFIELD, OF BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR TO IIIDR- remit LAND & IIKEPEY LIMITED, OF BIRMINGHAIVI, ENGLAND.
LOOSE-LEAF BOOK.
Application filed May 28, 1923.
To all whom it concern:
Be it known that I, IVALTEP. REGINALD Honsrrnnn, a British subject, residing at Kalamazoo Works, Northfield, in the city of Birmingham, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Relating to Loose-Leaf Books, of which. the following is a specification.
This invention relates to loose leaf books of the type in which thongs or the like passing through the rear portions of the leaves are used for securing the same to the covers, the thong tightening and releasing mechanism being located in one of the covers.
The object of the invention is to simplify the construction and facilitate the manu-' facture and storage of such books and their component parts, and also enable the parts to be conveniently renewed.
The invention comprises the arrangement of the thong tightening and releasing mechanism in a frame, carrier or container situated within one of the covers.
The invention also comprises the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described.
In the two accompanying sheets of explanatory drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view showing in the open position a portion of a book constructed in accordance with this inven tion.
Figure 2 is a sectional side elevation, and Figure 3 a plan illustrating the construction in detail.
Figures 4 and 5 are respectively similar views to Figures 2 and 3 showing a modified construction.
Referring to Figures 1 to 3, I employ the following principal elements, namely, a pair of covers a, b, a pair of clamping bars, 0, (Z, binding thongs c, and mechanism (herein termed securing mechanism) for tightening and releasing the thongs. At one end the thongs are hingedly connected by a pin to the rear edge of the cover 6, and the hinge elements 9 on that cover are formed with rounded outer surfaces which can abut and roll on the outer side of the adjacent clamping bar d. After passing through the bars the other ends of the thongs are secured to a movable cross bar it in the securing mechanism. The latter is of the well known type in which the required Serial No. 642,091.
motion of the cross bar is produced by means of a screw 2' passing through a nut on the said bar. Preferably a stiff and relatively short compressionscrew is used, and
one end of the stem on which the screw is formed may be extended and bent to form an operating crank handle j. The securing mechanism above described is mounted within a carrier, frame or container 7: which is preferably of sheet metal and may be reinforced where required to provide the required rigidity. Also the carrier or the like is preferably constructed to enclose totally the securing mechanism. One edge (Z) of the carrier is rounded either throughout its length, or at projecting portions of the same to abut and roll on the other clamping bar a, and on the same edge, or in any other convenient position provision is made for effecting a hinge connection with the other cover by pins m. This cover is made hollow on its inner side or is formed with a recess to accommodate the independent securing mechanism. If desired a. clip or catch may be provided on the inner side of the cover for attaching to it the carrier of the securing mechanism. When it is required to operate the mechanism the adjacent cover is swung back clear of the carrierso thatthe handle can be manipulated (as shown by dotted lines in Figure 2). 7
In a book as above described there are no hinge connections. between the covers and clamping bars. The essential parts of the binder consisting of the covers, the clampin bars, and the securing mechanism an thongs, are complete in themselves. The same securing mechanism and thongs can be fitted to clamping bars and covers of different sizes, and any of the parts can be readily replaced or renewed at any time.
Referring to the modified construction shown in Figures 4; and 5, the thongs e pass through slots in the rear or inneredge of the cover Z) and are secured by pins n inserted through metal caps 0 secured to the thongs. The pins lie in recesses in the cover and abut against the adjacent ends of the recesses when the thongs are under tension. In this construction there are no hinge connections between the thongs and the cover I) and the edge of the latter rolls on the adjacent clamping bar d. Also the inner or rear edge of the other cover 0 rolls on its clamping bar 0 without any hinge connection with the same. The thongs pass through slots in the said edge, and the container A? for the securing mechanism is surrounded by the edges of the cover recess in which it lies, the container being hinged to the cover by pins m. The rounded edgeof the container near the rear edge of the book abuts against and can roll on the adjacent edge of the container recess in the cover.
Having thus desoribedmy invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In loose leaf books, the combination comprising a pair ofcovers, a pair of clamping bars situated between the rear edges of the covers, thongs attached to one of the covers, a cross bar secured to the thongs, a screw engaging the cross bar, and a carrier for the screw and cross bar hingedly connected with the other cover, substantially as described.
2. In loose leaf books, the combination comprising a pair of covers, a pair of clamping bars situated between the rear edges of the covers, thongs attached to one of the covers, a cross bar secured to the thongs, a screw engaging the cross bar, a carrier containing the screw and cross bar,- and a hinge connection between the carrier and the other cover, the latter being recessed on its inner side to accommodate the carrier, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
IVALTER REGINALD HORSFIELD.
