UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GASSIUS M. OOOLIDGE, OF ANTVVERP, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN THE PROCESSES 0F TAKING PHOTOGRAPHIC PICTURES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,724, dated April 14, 1574; application filed January 12, 1874.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, O. M. COOLIDGE, of Antwerp, in the county of Jefferson and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Processes for Taking Photographs; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in a aprocess for taking a photograph or other picture of a persons head large on a miniature body, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents the head, and B the body of the person whose picture is to betaken. 0 represents a sketch or drawing of a miniature body of any desired form or shape, and with or without any additions. This sketch or drawing is held up in front of the person in proper position, so that when the picture is taken the head A will appear as forming part of or belonging to the miniature body, the large head and small body being taken at one time.
The drawing or other picture to be added to the head of the person or subject, must be upon such. thick material, such as wood or pasteboard, that it will not bend and destroy the effect of the picture. By my process the head and body are taken at one operation, and can be produced upon a small card, which will clearly show a large head and add thereto a body in any shape greatly reduced in size, and give an effect either comical or otherwise, as desired.
If the picture is to be taken from a live ob ject, the person can either stand or sit down. If taken from a picture of a prominent or other person, it is immaterial whether the pic ture or photograph be a full length standing, a sitting, or simply a head picture or photograph. In either case it is but necessary to apply the board or card with the reduced body to the person or subject at a point under the chin, as hereinbefore shown and described.
I am aware that aprocess for ornamentingthe circle or halo of a picture or photograph by the employment of a diaphragm provided'with a central opening, through which the person or subject is represented to the camera, when said opening is surrounded by ornament or embellishlnent for producing a portrait or picture with an ornamental or embellished border, is not new hence, I disclaim such as being any part of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The process described, of producing caricature photographic pictures by means of a board or card of stiff material having a min iature body or other design thereon, the same being held up close to the person or subject to be photographed, arranged so as to present a complete, although disproportioned, figure on the negative, as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 22d day of December, 1873.
