SHOE LAST.
Application filed November 2, 1922. Serial No. 598,513.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known` that I, JOSHUA KING N ORTHRUP, a citizen of the United States,
residing at Ellicottville, in the county of` Cattaraugus and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shoe Lasts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to lasts, but more particularly to a. sectional last whose heel part is detachable from its fore part.
One of the principal expenses in the manufacture of shoes is the cost of the lasts., one
last serving for a, comparatively few pairs of shoes, after which it is discarded for a new one. Still further expense is incurred in that it is necessary to make new lasts to accord with the styles as they change from season to season. At the present time, these lasts are made of one of our most valuable timbers of which the country is `fast being stripped. y
One of the chief objects of this invention is the construction of an inexpensive last which is considerably more durable than those hitherto in use, thereby effecting a marked saving in the cost of shoe manufacture. 1 v
A further object is to provide improved means for detachably locking the parts of the last together.
ln the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the improved last taken in the plane of line 1 1, Fig. 2. Figure 2 is a bottom plan view thereof. Figure 3 is a transverse section on line 3-3, Fig. 1. Figure 4 is an enlarged sectional view of the means for detachably holding the parts of the last together. Figure 5 is a horizontal section on line 5-5, Fig. 4.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The invention is illustrated in connection with a two-part last consisting of a heel part and a fore part l1 which are slidably and detaohabl connected along the substantially verticalyjoint-line 12.` The adjoining faces of these arts are provided with oppositely-facing oulders 13, 14 to insure t e top and bottom portions of the heel section being iiush with the corresponding portions of the fore part section when said parts are assembled. ITo hold the sectionsagainst pulling apart lengthwise, one of them is provided with a'dovetail tongue 15 which engages a corresponding groove 16 in the other part.
It will be noted. as shown in Figs. 1 and 'G0 4, that the joint-line 12 inclines or slants1 forwardly from' the bottom to the top of the last. This construction permits the necessary shortening action of the last to enable the heel part to be removed from the shoe without affecting the Ifore part. The last sections are preferably constructed of metal and l propose to make the heel -part 10 of cast steell and the fore part 11 of aluminum or like light metal or of hollow cast steel. The bot-tom of said fore part is preferably provided with a recess or socket 17 for receiving a renewable sole portion 18 of wood or similar material. The latter may be securely fastened to the lastsection by a screw 19 or other means. When this wooden sole portion becomes worn out from use, it is only necessary to substitute a new one for it, while the last-body itself can be used repeatedly, thus a'ording a saving of material and reducing the cost of the manufacture of shoes accordingly. B making the fore part of the lastof alumlnum, the same can be melted and recast into dierent shapes, to suit the changing styles of shoes, thus rendering it unnecessary to throw the last away. Practically no change in style is ever made in the heel of the shoe, so that that section can be used continuously with di'erently-shaped forepartv sections.
To hold thel parts of the last securely together and prevent any relative sliding movement thereof, a locking device iroctt as vided which is preferably constru follows:
The heel section 10 is provided with the usual jack-spindle socket 20 and arranged at substantially right angles thereto, and opening into the lower end of said socket is a hole 21 which extends to the front face -of said section. Arranged in this hole is a the latter being sleeve 22 and a bushing 23, located in front of the former and flush with the face of the heel section. The fore-part 11 is provided with a socket 24 in axial aline'- ment with the hole 21 and of the same diameter as the bore of the bushing 23. A springpressed locking bolt 25 is slidably mounted 'fin the socket 24 and is adapted to project into thebushin 23, its spring 26-normally holding said bo t in its locked or projected 'falle emleegeel space 3l eed el seul sockel', m lme with ly less allem position 'for preventing relollye vertical dis placement of the lest sections., es shown im Fig. l. (3o-operating with this locking lool@ end slidololy moumeol Wlllln the sleeve 22 eed falle bushing 23 is e releasing pin or bolt 2'? to'whieln is applied! o spying 28 normally tending to hold ifo im 'lits relmeeeol position.
A key 29 is employed for pl'ojectng-tlxe releasing; lmolxt end Wesseling the `locking looll; sueiemfly o permit the sepmelzion of alrne lest seeiioes, As shown im Fig. 5, (alle web 3U of this key is eem-shaped eml when imselited im elle jock-spindle sockelJ 20s oceuples formed im the lowesn the hole 2l, shown im Fig. The meximum elsmeen of elle key-Web meludmg llas shank is slightele dlsmelzel oi? spmlle soelge;e so @het ille ley een loe 'freely pessel lzluougll "l e iet-o llas opel lion. w' le unlocked posllom slloym key-Web extends lief@ 520 @ed neueste @be of elle 'x llos withdrew L lgseeese l claim es my lmyemion:
