Be it known that we,"(lHAnLns FVBEN- 'NION, Josnrn Grounnnotmn, and 1 A T UR BATEs, residing at Leicester, Leicestershire, England, have invented certain Improvements in Machines for Shaping Uppers Over Lasts, of which the following description, in connection'with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like reference characters on thedrawings indicating like parts in the several figures."
This invention relates to machines for use in the manufacture of boots andshoesfor shaping uppers over'lasts. In some of its features the invention has particular advantages as applied to pulling-over ma chines, and it is herein shown in its application to a well-known type of machine/the general organization oi which is shown and described in United States Letters Patent No. 1,029,387, granted on June 11,1912 upon an application of R. F. McFeely. It is to be understood, however, that in many'of its aspects the invention is-not limited to machines of the particular typeillustrated.
' An object of the invention is to provide for closer conformation of an upper to its last and more effective stretching of the upper than has been characteristic heretofore of power machines having a determinate cycle of operations. Experience has demonstrated that'for many kinds of uppers and differing styles of lasts a mere continu ous and progressive relative movement between the last and the upper gripping means is not always sufiicient to conform the upper closely to the last or to take the stretch fully out of the upper. It has accordingly been the practice in the operation, for example, of pulling-over machines of the type shown in-said prior patent, for the operator, after the machine has come to a stop with .the upper under tension, to move one or more of the gripper levers to vary the lateral or lengthwise tension of the upper, thus completing the stretching and conforming of the upper to-the last as observation shows to be necessary. The present invention, in one of its important aspects, contemplates an organization whereby the operator will be relieved entirely or for thexmos't part of the necessity of, performing such subsidiary operations.

As applied to a machine in which the grippers are operated yieldingly through springs which may assume difierent degrees of tension proportional to differences in resistance of different portions of the upper, the invention provides, as a further feature, novel means designed to prevent a balancing action between difierent springs with a consequent tendency to displace the upper on the last. Such means has particular advantages in an organization including supplemental gripper operating means as herein shown, wherein it is desirable to impart to different grippers supplemental movements of substantially equal extent without substantially altering the relation assumed by the different grippers in the initial upper pulling operation. In the illustrative machine the supplemental movements are conveniently imparted to the opposite side grippers from a single operating member through connections which are relatively movable in proportion to differences in the initial movements of the different grippers,
and as applied to such an organization the means whereby the operating connections for the grippers are arranged to compensate automatically for differences in the compression of the respective gripper springs. More particularly. in the construction shown the side gripper levers are connected by links to opposite arms of a. pivoted lever which is moved bodily to impart to the grippers their supplemental movements, and said lever arms are so arranged that their efi'ective lengths are altered in proportion to differences in compression of the different springs and in such manner as to compensate for such differences of compression. This arrangement, supplementing the normal friction of the different parts, serves to guard against such balancing action of the springs as might occur for example when the grippers are moved to relax the force of the pull on the upper.
Still another feature of the invention consists in novel means for effecting relative movement of different grippers for adjust ing the upper, the machine shown having manual means arranged to operate through. the supplemental operating connections for the side grippers to move said grippers simultaneously in opposite directions for ad justing the upper transversely. Advantageously in the construction shown the means which assists, as above explained. in preventing relative balancing movement between the opposite side grippers co-operates also with the manual adjusting means to assist in maintaining the grippers in adusted relation. Still further to assist in maintaining such relation of the grippers, the machine shown is provided with a friction device associated with the manual adjusting means and tending to prevent its displacement.
The above and other features of the in vention, including certain details of construction and combinations of parts, will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims.

Since the features common to the machine herein shown and to prior machines of the illustrative type are shown and described in detail in prior patents including Patent No. 1,029,387 above mentioned, such featmcs will be described herein only in as far as is necessary for an understanding of the present invention.
Machines of this general type include in their organization a toe gripper 2 and opposite side grippers a connected respectively to an intermediate updraw lever G and to opposite side updraw levers 8, these levers at their rear ends having swiveled connections with blocks 10 slidingly mounted on tension rods 12 provided with. springs lei which bear downwardly on the blocks and are engaged at their upper ends by adjustable tension nuts 16 on the rods. The rod 12 for the toe gripper lever is tired to a vertically movable cam slide 18 and the rods 12 for the side gripper levers are fixed to a similar cam slide 20. these cam slides being operated by the usual upijlraw rams which are mounted on a cam shaft 22. ll will be understood that upon the starting of the machine, with a shoe presented with the margin of its upper extending within the open gripper jaws, the cam shaft :22 makes a partial revolution, imparting down ward movement to the cam slides 18 and 20 to close the grippers on the upper and then through the springs 14- to impart pulling movement yicldingly to the grippers. thereby effecting a relative.separation be tween the upper ends of? the cam slides and the blocl 10 proportional to the compression of the springs, as shown in Fig. 2. The rotation of the cam shaft is then ill stopped by the automatic action of theusual starting and stopping means, including a brake shoe 24 which engages the driving forepart, mounted respectively on a front' arm 28 and on opposite side arms 30, are operated to wipe the margin of the upper inwardly and to fasten it to the sole or insole, the toe and side grippers at the same time receiving their overdraw movements and being finally tripped to release the margin of the upper. The parts of the machine are then returned to their starting positions, the cam shaft coming to a stop at the end of a complete revolution.
For the purpose of imparting supplemental movements to the toe and side grippers after the machine has come to rest with the upper held under tension, in order to stretch the upper more effectively and to work it into better conformity to the contour of the last, the machine herein shown is provided with an auxiliary cam shaft 32 mounted on a bracket 34 secured on the rear of the head portion of the machine, this shaft in the construction shown being operated and controlled independently of the driving and controlling means for the main camshaft 22 by means to be hereinafter described. The rear ends of the side updraw levers 8 are connected by links 36 respectively to oppositely disposed arms 38 and 40 of a lever member which is pivoted at 42 on an operating lever 44, the lever 44 being pivoted in turn at 46 on the bracket 34 and having an upwardly extending arm provided with a roll 48 to co-operate with a cam 50 on the cam shaft 32. It will be evident by reference to Fig. 2 that the cam 50 is arranged, by engagement with the roll 48, to swing the lever 44 about its pivot 46 in the direction to pull upwardly on the links 36 and thus to swing the gripper levers 8 in the direction to relax the tension of the upper. Fast on the cam shaft 32 is also an edge cam 52 which is arranged to act on a lever 54 mounted on the pivot 46 and held against the cam by a spring 56, this lever carrying a pawl 58 for engagement with ratchet teeth 60 on the rearwardly extending arm of the lever 44 to swing the lever in the direction for imparting upper tensioning movement to the side grippers when the cam 52- swings the lever arm 54 downwardly. It will be noted by reference to Fig. 2 that the cam 52 is notched adjacent to its high portion and that in the normal stopping'position of the shaft 32*" a projection 62 on thelever'54' is positioned" in said'notc'h, the lever being held by its spring in its uppermost p'osition. For imparting to the toe gripper, similarly to the side grippers, movement alternately in the direction to increase the ten sion ofthe upper, there is mounted alsoon the pivot 74 lever arm 82 in position to be engaged by a cam 84 on the cam shaft 32, this lever being rigidly connected to an upwardly extending lever arm 86 provided with a pawl 88 for engagement with ratchet teeth 90 on the arm 7 6 to move this arm in the direction to depress the rear end of the gripper lever 6. A spring 92 connected to the arm 86 holds thearm 82 against its cam.
It will benoted that in the stopping position of the, shaft 32 the end of the arm 82 is seated in a notch formed in the cam'84 adjacentto its high portion, and in this 'posi tion of the parts the pawl 88 is held out of engagement with the ratchet" teeth 90 against the tension of its spring 94 by the action of a link 96 pivoted at 98 on'the bracket 34 and having a slot 100 to receive a pin 102 on an arm 104 of the pawl. It will be noted that the pawl 88, like the pawl 58 of the side gripper operating mechanism, is of double formation, that is, comprises two members with their ratchet engaging ends slightly displaced one from the other to render the pawl more precise in its action on the ratchet teeth. a
In the starting position of the machine the levers 44 and 7 6 are held, through their link connections to the gripper levers, in such position that the rolls 48 and 78 are spaced from their respective cams a sufficientdistance to allow for any normal movement of the gripper levers through the action of the cam slides 1.8 and 20 in the main upper pulling operation. The drawings show the machine with the parts positioned as they are in the period of rest at the end of the main upper pulling operation, the rolls 48 and 78 having been moved from their 'first positionjtoward their respective cams. f If the operator now actuates the starting means for the cam shaft 32,'the cam's'f O and SO are turned into position to engage "the "rolls 48 and 78 and through the lever and link connections described to move the toe and side grippers positively in the direction to relax the tension of the upper. As the cams continue their movement, they release the rolls and permit the updraw springs 14 again to act on the gripper levers to impart upper pulling movement yieldingly to the grippers. Finally the cams 52 and 84 arrive in position to act on the respective levers 54 and 82, and by the movement of these levers the pawls 58 and 88 are released to permit their springs to force them into engagement with the ratchet teeth 60 and 90 and are rendered operative on the ratchet teeth to impart to the lever and link mechanisn'is movements in the reverse direction from those effected by the cams 50 and to move the gripper levers positively in the direction to increase the tension of the upper. Supplemental movements are thus imparted to the gripper levers first positively in the direction to relax the tension of the upper and then in the direction to increase the tension, the movements in the latter direction being first yielding and then positive. It will be understood that the cams on the shaft 2 may be variously arranged for imparting movements in any desired sequence to the respective toe and side grippers, the cams in the construction shown being arranged to operate the different grippers substantially simultaneously for relaxing and for increasing the tension. It will also be understood that by adjusting the stop screw 64, and by adjusting the link 96 relatively to its pivotal mounting 98, the time of engagement of the different pawls with the respective ratchet teeth may be varied to increase or diminish the extent of positive pulling movement imparted to the grippers by the action of the pawls. The extent of relaxing movement 01'' the grippers effected by the cams 50 and 80 also may be varied by the adjustment of eccentric studs 106 and 108 on which the rolls 48 and 78 are respectively mounted. At the end of the revolution of the cam shaft 2 the members 54 and 82 are permitted by their cams to spring upwardly to render the screw 64 and the link 96 efiective to swing the pawls away from their ratchet teeth, thus releasing the grippers from the pawls to permit manual movements of the grippers, if desired, as well as to permit the gripper levers to be returned ultimately to starting position without interference of the pawls.
In the operation of the side gripper levers 8 the respective tension springs 14, as is Well understood, may be differently compressed, depending on differences in resistance as between the opposite side portions of the upper, and it is desirable that such difference of compression be maintained in the supplemental movements of the grippers in order that such movements may be substantially of the upper on the last by the balancingaction of the updraw springs. For this pur-- pose the lever arms 38 and 40 are so arrai'iged that a line comiecting the points of pivotal connection oi these arms with the links 36 passes above the axis of the pivot 42. a
result of this construction a variation in the ei'l'eetive lengths of the lever arms 38 and 40 alies place in proportion to any (ilitlerence in the extent of updraw movements of the opposite side levers 8. The lever arms 38 and 40 are so arranged that when the rair ends oil the side npdraw levers are in substantially the same horizontal plane \vi h their updraw springs under substantially the same stress the eliective lengths ol the arms are substantially equal. As a result. however, of a dillerence in the extent ol' the upper pulling movements of the levers S, with the resulting difference in compression of the respective springs14,the lever arm 38 or 40 which is connected to the updraw lever which is under the greater spring tension assumes a position in which its effective length is less than that of the other arm. as will be readily understood. In this manner a compensating action is provided for to insure against a balancing action of the side updraW springs during the supplemental gripper movements. it *ill be und rstood that when the grippers release the upper the springs 14 force the rear ends oi the gripper levers downwardly until the blocks 10 engage the cam slide 20, thus reestablishing the normal relation with respect to elite;- tive length of the arms 38 and 40.

transversely of the last either before or dur-- ing the operation of the cam shaft 82, as frequently desirable in order to position the upper correctly in relation to the last, the machine is provided witha hand lever 110 which is fixed on a lever arm 112 pivoted at 114 on the frame of. the machine, the arm 112 being connected by a link 116 to an arm 118 which is pivotally mounted at 42 on the lever 44 and is rigidly connected to lever arms 38 and 40. By movement of the hand lever 110 the operator may thus impart movement in one direction to one of the side grippers and a simultaneous movement in the opposite direction to the other gripper to shift the upper laterally, the direction of the shifting movement of the upper depending upon the direction of movement of the lever 110. It will be evident that by reason of the compensating arrangement above described, assisted by the normal friction of the parts, the side gripper levers tend to remain in the positions which they assume in response to the movement of the lever 110. As a further means for insuring against balancing action of the opposite side gripper springs, a friction block 120 is se-' cured to the lever arm 112 and is mounted for sliding movement in engagement with a bar 122 which is pivotally mounted on the head of the machine. It will be evident that differences in movement as between the opposite side levers 8 necessarily involve a movement of the lever 110 and an accompanying movement of the block 120' along the bar 122, and that the friction block by its action on the bar assists in maintaining the differential relation of the side gripper levers. It will also be evident that the ar rangement of the link 116 is such that movement of the lever 44 about its pivot 46 has substantially no effect upon the position of the hand lever 110.
The operating means for the cam shaft 32 comprises a horizontal driving shaft 124 mounted in bearings in the bracket 34 at one side of the machine, this shaft having a spiral gear 126 in engagement with a cooperating gear 128 on the shaft 32 to'drive the latter at a considerably lower rate of speedthan the shaft 124. The shaft 124 may be driven through any suitable clutch mechanism, the construction shown comprising a clutch constructed and operated substantially as shown and described in United States Letters Patent No. 1,124,620, granted on January 12, 1915, upon an application of A. E. Jerram. Briefly stated, this clutch comprises a driving pulley 130 having a clutch ring 132, and a co-operating clutch member 134 keyed to a hub on the shaft 124 and slidable lengthwise of the shaft. The clutch member 134 has at one end a clutch ring 136 to co-operate with the ring 132 on the pulley and, at its'other end a friction ring 138 arranged for engagement with a stationary brake member 140. Springs 142 tend to move the member 134 into clutching engagement with the pulley. Between its opposite endsthe member 134 is provided with a peripheral groove 144 in a plane oblique to the axis of the shaft 124, and seated in this groove are opposite ring segments 146 which are pivoted to the ends of a yoke member 148, the yoke member having a depending stem 150 journaled in a pendent lever 152 which is mounted on a horizontal pivot 154. The points of pivotal connection of the ring segments 146 with the yoke member 148 are slightly vbelow the axis of the shaft 124, and by reason ,of' this arrangement the yoke member 148 is not only oscil lated about the axis of its stem 150 by the turning movement of the clutch member 134, but is also oscillated lengthwise of the shaft 124 imparting swinging movement to the lever 152- about its pivot 154. As long as the. lever 152 is thus permitted to oscillate about its pivot the clutch member 134 is held by its springs in clutching engagement with the pulley, T 0 open the clutch and stop the rotation oftheshiaft 124 it is only neces} sary to stop the oscillatory movement of the lever 152 and to hold it in position to render the ring-segments effective inthe groove 144 to wedgethe member-134 away from the pulley and into engagement with the brake member.
For controllingth'e clutch'in the manner above described the machine is provided with a pair of toggle links 156 and158 con-v nected together by a pivot 160 andpivotally mounted respectively on a bracket arm 162 and on a depending portion of the lever 152. A spring 164 connected to a lugaon the link 156 serves to hold the links; normally in straightened position determined by' a stop screw 166. In this position of .the parts the brake is applied, as shown in Fig. 4, and the auxiliary cam-shaft 32 is idle. I As further means of control, to. insure that the shaft 32 shall make a complete revolution even though the operator may remove his'foot immediately from'the starting treadle, alink 170'is con nected at its upper end to an; eccentric'pin on the end of the shaft 32 and at its lower end has nuts 172arranged to bearupwardly under an extension ofthe toggle link 156. As soon as the shaft 32 starts to turn, upwardj movement is impartedto the link 170 and the nuts' 172- are thus rendered effective to hold the toggle in broken condition even though the operatorremoves his foot-from the treadle. As the shaft completes its revolution downward movement of the link 170 permits the toggle to resume its straightened condition-through the action-of the spring 174 and thus to stop the oscillation of the lever 152 and cause the openin'g o'f the clutch. Automatically operative means is thus provided to stop the auxiliary gripper operating means at the end; of a single revolution ofthe shaft 32 if the operator removes his foot from the treadle, If desired, however, the operator may hold the treadle depressed in such manne'r'as to main"- tain' the toggle-in. broken condition to-cause the cam shaft 32to make as many revolutions as'may be desired. Alternatively, of course, the operator may, after the shaft 32 has come to a stop, again actuate theclutch to causea repetition of the supplemental gripper movements. v v
Having described the invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
p 1. In a machine of the class described, the combination with means for gripping an upper on a last, and means for effecting relative movement of said gripping means and the last to pull the upper, of supplemental power driven means arranged to be started in operation after the upper has been pulled and constructed to effect a plurality of rela tive movements of said gripping means and the last in time relation for relaxing and increasing alternately the tension of the upper.
2. In a machine of the class described, the combination with means for gripping an upper on a last, and means for effecting relative movement of. said gripping means and the last to pull the upper, of independently operative power means for effecting subsequently additional relative movements of said gripping means and the last, said power means having a determinate cycle of movements for alternately relaxing and increas ing the force of the pull on the upper.
3. In a machine of the class described, the combination with means for gripping an upper on a last, and means for effecting relative movement of said gripping means and the last to pull the upper, of supplemental power operated means arranged for optional use after the upper has been pulled and having a determinate cycle of movements for relaxing and increasing alternately the tension of the upper.

In a machine of the class described, the combination with means for gripping an upper on a last, and means for effecting relative movement of said gripping means and the last to-pull the upper, of supplemental power operated means for ettecting subsequently a plurality of relative movements of said grippingmeans and the last in time relation for relaxing and increasing alternately the tension of the upper, and controlling means enabling the operator to determine the time interval between the first upper pulling operation. and the operation of said supplemental means.
In a machine of. the class described, the combination with means for gripping an upper on a last, and operating means for effect mg relative movement of said gripping means and the last to pull. the upper, of supplemental power operated means constructed and arranged to effect subsequently a plurality of positive relative movements of said gripping means and the last in time relation for relaxing and increasing alternately the tension of the upper. In a machine of the class described, the combination with means for gripping an upper on a last, and operating means for effect mg relative movement of said gripping means and the last to pull the upper, of supplemental power operated means arranged for operation after said first operating means has come to a stop and constructed to etlect a plurality of relative movements of said upper gripping means and the last in time relation for relaxing and increasing alternately the tension of the upper.
7. In a machine oithe class described, the combination with means for gripping upper on a last, and means for efiecting relative moven'ient of said gripping means and the last to pull the upper, of supplemental power operated means having a determinate cycle of operations to effect subsequently a positive relative movement of said gripping means and the last to relax the tension of the upper and then to cause reverse relative movement of the gripping means and the last to pull the upper first yieldingly and then positively.
8. In a machine of the class described, the combination with means for gripping an upper on a last, and means for effecting relative movement of said gripping means and the last to pull the upper, of supplemental power operated means arranged to be started in operation after the upper has been pulled and constructed to effect a positive relative movement of said gripping means and the la st to lQltlX the tension of the upper and then automatically to reverse the relative movement to increase the tension of the upper.

In a machine of the class described, the combination with means for gripping an up per on a last, of power driven operating means tor effecting relative movements ot said upper gripping means and the last in automatically determined sequence to pull the upper, then to relax the pull, and finally to subject the upper to a positive pull,
10. in a machine of the class described, the combination with means for gripping an upper on a last, of power driven operating means constructed and arranged to effect in auton'iatically determined sequence a yielding relative movement of said upper gripping means and the last to pull the upper, then a positive relative movement to relax the pull, and then a positive relative movement to pull the upper again.

In machine of the class described, the combination with means for gripping an upper on a last, and means for effecting relative movement of said gripping means and the last to pull the upper, of supplemental power operated means for effecting subsequently a plurality of relative movements 01. said gripping means and the last in time relation for relaxing and increasing alter nately the tension of the upper, and means for varying the extent of the relative move ments effected by said supplemental power means.

In a machine of the class described, the combination with means for gripping till an upper on a last, of power driven operating means including mechanism for effecting in time relation relative movements of said gripping means and the last to relax and increase alternately the tension or the upper, said mechanism being adjustable to vary independently the extent of said difi erent relative movements.

In a machine of the class described, the combination with'ineans for grippingan upper on a last, of power driven means for ett'ecting a plurality of relative 'movements of said upper gripping means and the last to pull the upper, and additional means for efrecting a relative tension relaxing movement of said gripping means and the'last in time relation to a pulling movement, said addition means being adjustable to vary the extent of said relaxing movement. 1

In a machine of the class described, the combination with means for gripping an upper on a last, of power driven operating means for effecting a plurality of relative movements of said gripping means and the last to pull the upper and to relax the tension alternately including mechanism for et' fecting a final pulling movement in time relation to a relaxing movement, said mechanism being adjustable to vary the extent of the final pulling movement independently of the extent of the relaxing movement. In a machine of the class described, the combination with power operated means automatically operative to pull an upper over a last and to cometo a stop with the upper held under tension, of additional power operated means arranged to lie-started in operation after the upper has been pulled and automatically operative to relax and increase alternately the tension of the upper and to come to a stop with the upper held under tension.

In a machine of the class described, the combination with power operated means automatically operative to pull an upper over a last and to come to a stop with the upper held under tension, of additional pow-' er means arranged for operation after said first means has come'to a stop and having a determinate cycle of movements to relax and increase alternatelythe tension of the upper.

In a machine of the class described, the combination with grippers for engaging an upper at opposite sides ot a last, and operating means for moving said grippers to pull the upper, of supplemental power driven gripper operating means con structed to impartsubsequently to both said grippers simultaneously a positive movement to relax the tension of the upper and then automatically to reverse said movement to increase the tension.

In amachine of the class described, the combination with grippers for engaging an upper respectively at opposite sides of a last, and operating means for moving said grippers to pull the upper, of supplemental gripper operating means comprising a member connected to both said grippers, and power means having a de terminate cycle of operations to move said member successively in opposite directions for relaxing and increasing alternately the tension oi: the upper.

In a machine of the class described, the combination with grippers for engaging an upper respectively at opposite sides of a last, and operating means for moving said grippers to pull the upper, of supplemental gripper operating means comprising a pivotally mounted lever, power driven mechanism for moving said lever alternately in opposite directions, and connections between said lever and both side grippers for imparting movements to both grippers simultaneously to relax and increase alternately the tension of the upper.
57. In a machine of the class described, the combination with grippers for engaging an upper respectively at opposite sides of a last, and operating means for moving said grippers to pull the upper, of supplemental gripper operating means comprising a member connected to both said grippers a cam shaft, and cams on said shaft for moving said member successively in opposite directions to relax and increase alternately the tension of the upper.
58. In a machine of the class described, the combinnation with opposite side grippers, gripper levers, and operating means for moving said levers to pull an upper, of supplemental gripperoperating means comprising a pivotally mounted operating lever, link connections between said lever and the gripper levers, a cam for moving said operating lever in one direction for relaxing the tension of the upper, and pawl and ratchet mechanism automatically operative in time relation to said cam to move said lever in the opposite direction for increasing the tension of the upper.
59. In a machine of the class described, the combination with grippers for engaging an upper on a last, and power means automatically operative to impart upper pulling movement to said grippers and to come to a stop with the upper held under tension, of supplemental gripper operating means arranged to be controlled independently of said first means and having an automatically determined cycle of operations to impart to said grippers additional movements alternately in opposite directions for relaxing and increasing respectively the tension of the upper.
60. In a machine of the class described, the combination with grippers for engaging an upper on a last and operating means comprising a cam shatt for imparting upper pulling movement to said grippers, oil supplemental gripper operating vmeans comprising a power driven cam shaft arranged to-be controlled independently of said first named shaft for imparting to the grippers subsequently movements alternately in opposite directions for relaxing and increasing respectively the tension of the upper.

In a machine of the class described, the combination with grippers for engaging an upper on a last, and power means comprising a cam shaft for imparting upper pulling movement to said grippers, of supplemental gripper operating means comprising a power drive'n cam shaft extending in transverse relation to said first named shaft and having operating cams thereon, and connections to the different grippers arranged to be operated by said cams for imparting supplemental movements to said grippers.

In a machine of the class described, the combination with toe and side grippers, and rotatable power means for imparting upper pulling movement to said grippers, of supplemental gripper operating means comprising a cam for imparting to the toe gripper movement to alter the tension of the upper, and an additional cam for imparting to both side grippers in unison movement to alterthe tension.

In a machine of the class described, the combination with toe'and side grippers, and operating means for imparting upper pulling movement to said grippers, of supplemental gripper operating means comprising cams for imparting to the toe gripper movements alternately in opposite directions for relaxing and increasing respec tively the longitudinal tensionofthe upper, and-additional cams for imparting to the side grippers movements alternately in opposite directions for relaxing and increasing the transverse tension of the upper.

In a machine of the class described, the combination with toe and side grippers, gripper levers, and operating means for impartingupper pulling'movement to said levers, of, supplemental operating means comprising pivotally mounted levers one of which is connected to the toe gripper lever and the other to both the side gripper levers, and power driven means for imparting to said operating levers movements alternately in opposite directions for relaxing and increasing respectively the tension of the upper. w

In a machine of the class. described, the combinatioirwith upper engaging grip pers, and operating means for said grippers including springs arranged ,to be differently stressed in proportion to diiferences in the extent of movementof thedifferent grippers, of supplemental gripper operating meanls comprising connections to the grippers for moving them subsequently to relax the force of the pull on the upper,said connections being arranged to compensate automatically for differences in the stresses j of the respective springs to assist in preventingabalancing, action between the springs when thepull is jrelaxed. and operating means for said grippers including springsv arranged to be differently stressed in proportion to differences in the extent of movement of, the diflerent grip pers, of supplemental gripper operating means comprising an operating memberlan operating connections between said member and-the respectivegrippers, said connections beingrelatively movable in the upper pulling operation and arranged to compensate automatically for differences in the stresses of the respective springs to assist in preventing a balancing action between said springs in the operation of the supplemental means.
70. In a machine of the class described, the combination with opposite side grippers, and operating means for said grippers including springs arranged to be differently stressed in proportion to differences inthe extent of movement of the different grippers, of supplemental gripper. operating means comprising an operating member and oper ating connections between said member and the respective grippers, said connections comprising lever arms for the diiierent respective grippers connected together and arranged to be moved in the upper pulling operation to positions in which the lever arm corresponding to the gripper spring which is under the greater stress is of a less effective length than the lever arm connected to the other gripper.
71. In a machine of the class described, the combination with opposite side grippers, gripper levers, and operating means including springs arranged to be ditierently stressed in proportion to differences in the extent of movement of the dijll'erent grip pers, of supplemental gripper operating means comprising an operating member having a lever thereon provided i yith opposite- 1y extending arms, and lililiS connecting said arms respectively to the dil'l' erent gripper levers to operate them, said lever arms being arranged to assume positions of dillerent effective length proportional to differences in the tension of the respective springs to counteract the tendency of said springs to assume a balanced relation in the operation of the supplemental means.
72. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a gripper, and means for operating it to pull an upper, of supplemental power driven gripper operating means comprising an operating member and an operating connection between said mem her and the gripper, and manual means arranged to operate through said connection to impart to the gripper also a movement to adjust the upper on the last.
73. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a plurality of grip pers, and means for operating said grippers to pull an upper, of supplemental power driven gripper operating means comprising connections through which to move the grippers subsequently to vary the tension of the upper, and manual means arranged to operate through said connections for imparting to the grippers also movements for adjusting the upper on the last.

In a machine of the class described, the combination with opposite side grippers, and means for operating said grippers to pull an upper, of supplemental power driven gripper operating means comprising connections through which to move the grippers subsequently to vary the tension of the upper, and manual means arranged to operate through said connections to impart to the opposite side grippers also movements simultaneously in opposite directions "for shifting the upper transversely of the last.

In a machine of the class described, the combination with opposite side grippers, and means for operating said grippers to pull an upper, of supplemental power driven gripper operating means comprising a movable operating member, operating connections between said member and the respective grippers arranged to permit movement oi the grippers relatively to each other, and manual means arranged to operate through said connections to move the opposite side grippers also simultaneously in opposite directions for adjusting the upper.

In a machine of the class described, the combination with opposite side grippers, gripper levers, and means for operating said levers to pull an upper, of supplemental power driven gripper operating means comprising a movable operating member, a lever pivoted on said member and having oppositely extending arms, links connecting said arms respectively to the difterent gripper levers to operate them through the movement of said member, and manual means connected to said pivoted lever for turning it to impart to the side grippers also movements for adjusting the upper on the last.
77. In a machine of the class described, the combination with opposite side grippers and gri iiper levers, of gripper operating means comprising a movable operating member, a lever pivotally mounted on said member and having oppositely extending arms, links connecting said arms respectively to the difl'erent gripper levers to operate them through the movement of'said member, a third arm connected to said oppositely extending arms, and a hand lever connected to said third arm for imparting to the opposite side grippers also movements simultaneously in opposite directions for adjusting the upper.
78. In a machine of the class described, the combination with opposite side grippers, of gripper operating means comprising a movable operating member, a lever pivotally mounted on said member and having oppositely extending arms, links connecting said arms respectively to the different grippers to operate them through the movement of said member, a manually operated member connected to said lever for turning it to move the side grippers also simultaneously in opposite directions for adjusting the upper, and a friction device associated with said manual member to assist in retaining the grippers in adjusted position.
79. in a machine of the class described, the combination with a plurality of grippers, and gripper operating means including springs arranged to be differently stressed in proportion to differences in the extent of movement of the different grip pers, of supplemental gripper operating means comprising connections to said grippers arranged to compensate automatically for di'li'erences in. stress of the dilierent springs to assist in preventing balancing ad tion of said springs, and additional means arranged to operate through said connectlons to move the grippers also relatively for adjusting the upper.

and operating means including springs arranged to be differently stressed in proportion to differences in the extent of movement of the different grippers, of supplemental gripper operating means comprising connections to said grippers arranged to compensate automatically for differences in stress of the different springs to assist in preventing balancing action of said springs, manual means arranged to operate through said connections to impart to the opposite side grippers movements simultaneously in opposite directions for adjusting the upper, and a friction device associated with said manual means to assist in preventing balancing action of the gripper springs.

In a machine of the class described, the combination with opposite side grippers, gripper levers, and operating means including springs arranged to be differently stressed in proportion to differences in the extent of movement of the different grippers, of supplemental power driven gripper operating means comprising a movable operating member, a lever pivotally mounted on said member and having oppositely extending arms connected respectively to the different gripper levers to operate them through the movement of said member, said arms being arranged to assume positions of different effective length to compensate fordifferences in the stresses of the different springs, and manual means for also turning said lever to move the opposite side grippers simultaneously in opposite directions for ad justing the upper transversely of the last.

In a machine of the class described, the combination with means for gripping an upper on a last, and operating means for effecting relative movement of said gripping means and the last to pull the upper, of supplemental operating means having a determinate cycle of power movements for relaxing and, increasing alternately the tension of the upper, and controlling mechanism to cause saidsupplemental operating means to repeat its cycle of'movementsl 84. In a machine of the class described, the combination with grippers and means for operating them to pull an upper over a last, of supplemental operating means for said grippers comprising a cam shaft and cam means thereon for moving the grippers alternately in opposite directions to relax and then to increase the tension of the upper, a clutch through which said cam shaft is operated, a member connected to the cam shaft for actuating said clutch to stop said shaft at a determinate point, and manual means for rendering said member inoperative and thereby causing the cam shaft to continue in operation.

In a machine of the class described, the combination with means for gripping an upper on a last, of power operated means for effecting a series of relative movements of said upper gripping means and the last in determinate order to pull and to relax the tension of the upper alternately, and controlling mechanism to enable the operator to vary the number of said relative movements.

In a machine of the class described, the combination with means for gripping an upper on a last, and power means automatically operative to effect a number of relative movements of said upper gripping means and the last and to come to a stop with the up er held under, tension, of con trolling mee to enable the operatei to vary the number of said relative movements.
89. In a machlne of the class described,
the combination with means for gripping an upper on a last, of power operated means having a determinate cycle of movements to operate said upper gripping means, and controlling mechanism constructed to enable the operator to determine for each shoe a number of repetitions of said cycle of movements while the gripping means maintains its hold on the upper.

In a machine of the class described, the combination with upper gripping means, power means having a determinate cycle of movements to operate said upper-gripping means, and overlaying and fastening means arranged to operate subsequently on the up per, of controlling mechanism constructed to enable'the operator to cause a repetition of the cycle of movements of said power. means to operate said gripping means a plurality of times while it maintains its hold on the upper and prior to the operation of the overlaying and fastening means.
91. In a machine of the class described, the combination with power means automatically operative to pull an upper over a last and to come toa stop with the upper held under tension, and means automatically operative upon a subsequent starting of the machine to overlay and fasten the upper, of supplemental power means automatically operative at the will of the operator in the interval between said upper pulling operation and the overlaying and fastening operations to vary determinately the tension of the upper and to come to a stop with the upper under tension, and controlling mechanism to enable the operator to vary the number of operations of said supplemental means upon the upper.
92. In a machine of the class described, the combination with power means automatically operative to pull an upper over a last and to come to a stop with the upper held under tension, and means automatically operative upon a subsequent starting of the machine to overlay and fasten the upper, of supplemental power means arranged for operation in the interval between said upper pulling operation and the overlaying and fastening operations and having a determinate cycle of movements to relax and increase alternately the tension of the upper, and controlling mechanism to enable the operator to determine for each shoea number of repetitions of the cycle of movements of said supplemental means.
