Description

w. 'w; 'TEAGUE EXPANS'IBLE FORM June 3 1924.
Filed Aug 20', 1923 INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented June 3, 1924.
UNE'EED STATES WEBSTER WELCH TEAGUE, OF MARION, INDIANA.
EXPANSIBLE FORM.
Application filed August 20, 1923. Serial No. 658,476.
To all "whom it may concern Be it known that I, il ni isrnn V. TEAGUE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marion, in the county of Grant and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Expansible Forms, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide an expansible form, or drum upon which fibrous material may be wound by the use of a suitable machine, for producing fibrous or paper receptacles or containers for products of various kinds.
A further object is to provide a form or drum comprising a plurality of semi-cylindrical elements adapted to be positioned for serving a form for a receptacle of a given size, with novel means for drawing these elements together and reducing: the size of the form, or the circumference of the cylinder, to facilitate removal from the receptacle after the latter has been built up by the winding movement of a plurality of sheets of fibrous material, suitable for the purpose.
A still further object is to provide one of the semi-cylindrical elements with transverse braces having shaft bearings formed therein, means for mounting the semi-cylindrical elements for movement with reference to each other, and adjustable devices for controlling such movement.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of elements described and claimed. it being understood that modifications may be made within the scope of the claims withoutdeparting from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an end view of the device; Figure 2 is a section on line 2.2 of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a longitudinal section through the semi-cylindrical elements, with the interior structure in plan.
The semi cylindrical elements of the form are designated 10 and 12. and element 10 is provided with rigidy mounted transverse braces 13 and 14 having hub portions 15 providing bearings for shaft 16. Each transverse brace includes an inwardly and laterally extending element 17 through which rivets are passed into element 10, and each brace also includes an offset 18 provided with a slot 19 engaged by a pin 20. The pins are rigid with reference to element 12 and project inwardly therefrom, and. the
slots limit the degree of expansion and contraction of the form.
Collars 21, 22 are carried by the shaft, adjacent to each brace, and in the position shown, being retained by set. screws 23, These collars are each threaded at 9st and receive one end of adjusting screw 25 having; a milled central disk portion 26, permitting of adjustment by hand. The opposite end of the screw is reversely threaded and enters a threaded bore 27 in socket member 28 projecting inwardly from element 12 and rigid therewith.
It will therefore be observed that element 12 is movable with reference to element 10 and the transverse braces, for the purpose of decreasing the circumference of the form after the winding operation incident to the formation of the receptacle or container. Ehe contracted form may be readily removed from the completed article. Particular emphasis is placed on the simplicity of the construction, the positive action, and the positive manner in which the form is maintained in an established position, the ele ments being absolutely rigid at any adjustment within the limit of the construction.
lVhat is claimed is 1. A .device of the class described, comprising a pair of semi-cylindrical elements, braces extending across one of said elements and rigid ther with. said braces including; shaft bearings, and means for adjustably mounting: the other of said semi-cylindrical elements with reference to that first named and with reference to said braces.
2. A device of the class described. com prising a pair of semi-cylindrical elements. bracesextending across one of said elements and rigid therewith. said braces including shaft bearings. means for adjustablv mounting the other of said semi-cylindrical elements with reference to that first named and with reference to said braces, and means for guiding and limiting movement of the second named semi-cylindrical element.
3. A device of the class described, comprising a pair of complementary form elements. a brace extending transversely and rigidly with reference to one of said elements, a shaft extending through the brace, a collar rigid on the shaft. and a reversely threaded device passing into the collar and having connection with the remaining element of the form.
4. A device of the class described, comprising a pair of form elements, transverse braces rigid with reference to one or said elements, said braces each including an 5 outer slotted portion, pins projecting from the inner side of the other form element and entering the slots, a shaft extending through the braces, collars rigid on the shaft, threaded socket members on the inner surface of that form element having the pin, and a reversely threaded adjusting device connecting each collar with one of the socket members for varying the relative position of the form elements, and the expansion and contraction of the form.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
