as i e M MOTOR PLOW WORKING ON THE FIXED CABLE SYSTEM.
Application filed December 4, 1923.
This invention relates to that type of motor plow which is adapted to haulitself along a cable anchored at the headlands, wherein one length of the cable is wound in upon a drum while the other length ispayed off from a second drum during each bout and in which the tractor frame is mounted on running and steering wheels and carries two sets of plow shares situated at opposite ends thereof adapted to be alternately lowered into and raised out of the operative position; our object being to provide motor plows of the type specified with means whereby the slack or paying off rope may be held clear of the plow shares in work.
According to our invention, two arms or poles are pivoted to the tractor frame, one at each end thereof, and the said pivoted arms or poles are each provided with a spring which causes it to be moved in a horizontal plane so as to hold a pulley situated at its extreme or outer end in constant contact with the adjacent length of the twopart cable; the arrangement being such as to cause the slack or paying-off rope to be held clear of the set of plow shares in work.
In order that our invention may be clearly understood, we will proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings; wherein Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a motor plow in which our invention is incorporated.
Fig. 2 isa plan View of the same. I
Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation on an enlarged scale illustrating the yielding means for holding the trolley arm in such a position that the slack in the paying-off rope is held clear of the plow shares when at work, and
Fig. a is a plan of the parts shown in Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, the tractor frame 1 is mounted on running wheels 2 Serial No. 678,436.
and carries an internal combustion engine 3 adapted, through mechanism not shown, to drive the main shaft 4 having the winding drums 5 mounted thereon and which carry the two-part cable 6, while 7 are the plow share frames fitted with plow shares 8; all of ordinary construction.
According to our invention, two arms or poles 9 are pivoted at 10 to the tractor frame 1, one at each end thereof, and the said arms or poles 9 are each provided with a spring 11 which causes it to move in a horizontal plane so as to hold a pulley 12 situated at its extreme or outer end in constant contact with the adjacent length of the two-part cable 6; the arrangement being such as to cause the slack or payingofi' part of the cable 6 to be held clear of the set of plow shares 8 at work.
Assuming the tractor to be travelling forward, the pull on the taut or windingin part of the cable 6 is suflicient to over come the spring 11 of its corresponding or leading pulley-arm or pole 9 and render the latter inoperative for the time being, while simultaneously the other or rear pulley-arm or pole 9, through the medium of its spring 11, holds the slack or paying-01f part of the cable 6 clear of the working plow shares 8 (see particularly Fig. 2). A At the end of the forward travel, and on the tension of the winding-in part of the cable 6 having been relaxed, the leading pulley-arm or pole 9 comes into action and moves the now slack winding-in part of the cable 6 to one side of the implement, when the positions of the plow shares 8 are reversed and the implement started on its return bout which has the effect of rendering the now leading pulley-arm or pole 9 inoperative.
lVha-t we'claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In motor plows of the type specified; the combination with the tractor and its cable, of spring-operated pulley-arms or poles mounted on the tractor frame and being adapted to hold the slack or paying-off part of the cable clear of the plow shares at work.
2. In motor plows of the type specified; the combination with the tractor and its cable, of two spring-operated pulley-arms or poles pivoted to the tractor "frame, one at each end thereof, adapted through the medium of their springs to move in a horizontal plane so as to keep their pulleys in constant contact with the cable and hold the slack or paying-off part of said cable clear of the plow shares at Work.
In Witness whereof We have hereunto set our hands in the presence of two Witnesses.
