HEEL-BUILDING MACHINE.
T 0 all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER A. HUD- soN, a citizen of the America, and a resident of United States of Cincinnati, in
the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio,
have invented a new and useful ment in a Heel-Building Machlne,
cation.
the following is a specifi This invention relates machines and partlcularly Improveof which heel-building to machines to be used in the building of rough heel blocks from stock leather blanks.
Heretofore the manufacture of rough heel blocks has been conducted by the building up leather in a series of clamps,
which travelled about were hand operated,
all of which a large wheel or belt and eventually returned to the place of the beginning.
of the wheel, the glue blanks would dry, and block turned to the oping this movement used to secure the when the dry rough erator, the operator move the block and then new block and place it in would Durmanually reproceed to build a the emptied clamp.
An object of my invention is to provide a device for building rough heel blocks in which the block ismutomatmally secured in the clamps and discharged therefrom.
Another object is to provide means whereby heel blocks can be built than has been possible hereto Another object is the purposes stated cient in operation.
Another object is to the'purposes stated, wherein more quickly fore.
to provide a device for that is simple and effiprovide a device for the parts are readily adjustable to permit varylng of the pressures exerted upon the heel blocks,
and
to permit adjustment of the parts to accommodate various sizes and shapes of blocks built thereon.
These and other objects are attained by the means described herein and disclosed in the accompanying drawings,
Fig. 1, is a front bodying my invention.
Fig. 2, is a rear view vice shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3, is a sectional Fig. 1.
Fig. at, is a plan view of a' in which elevation of a device emof parts of the de view on line 3-3 of modified form of a discharge mechanism forming a detail of my invention.
Fig. 5, is an enlarged front view of a clamp forming a detail of my invention.
which rough of layers of Serial No. 461,821.
Fig. 6, is a sectional view on line 6-6 of Fig. 5.
Fig. 7, is an enlarged sectional view taken on line 77 of Fig. 6.
My invention comprises a revoluble support d upon the periphery of which is mounted a series-of heel clamps H upon heel blocks K are built up. The support d is intermittently actuated by means of a motor 6 adapted to transmit rotatory motion to the\ support and a suitable means such as the foot lever 6 is provided to control the transmission of power from the motor to the support. wheel E is engaged by the yoke h of the clamps and is adapted to co-operate with certain other mechanisms in automatically moving the yokes into and out of clamping the worm I) mounted on the shaft 6 driven by the motor I). The shaft?) is supported by suitable brackets 19 A clutch shoe b is mounted on the shaft 6 and is adapted to revolve with the worm wheel I). A clutch b is fixedly mounted on the shaft 1) and has formed Within it a bore 19 parallel with the shaft 6. A slot 7) extends between the bore 6 and the outer surface of the clutch. A pin 19 is reciprocally mounted in the bore 5 and has extending from it the lug 6 extendingthrough the slot 7). A spring 6 is mounted in the bore 6 and tends to move the pin 6 out of the bore 12 The shoe 6 has a series of notches 19 adapted to be moved into registration with theflpin 6 whereby it is possible to transmit motion from the shoe and the worm wheel to the clutch, when the pin b engages in one of the notches 6 The rod Z2 is reciprocally mounted upon the brackets 5 which may in turn be mounted upon the brackets 5 A spring 19 is adapted to yieldingly retain the rod 6 in engagement with the clutch b. This isaccomp-lished by securing one end of the spring 72 to a bracket b and securing the other end of the spring to the rod 1). The upper endof the rod 5 has a face 1) formed thereon and disposed at such an angle that when the lug b on the pin 72 engages and is moved over the face Z), the
Acamthrough slots 6 lug 5 and the pin 6 will be moved against the spring 6 whereby the pin 6" is retained wholly within the body line of the clutch If. A cable I) is secured to the rod Z) and is adopted to be actuated by means of a foot lever 23 secured upon a platform a forming part of the frame A. The foot lever 6 cable 6 and rod I) bear such relation that when the foot lever is depressed. the rod 6 is disengaged from the lug 6 The forward end of the drive shaft Z) is mutilated whereby a lug 6 is formed thereon. A collar 1) is mounted upon the shaft Z) adjacent to the forward end thereof, and has a stud 6 formed thereon. The forward face 6 of the stud 6 is spaced from and does not engage the support (5. A driven shaft cl is revolubly mounted upon the frame A and has mounted upon its forward end a support (Z. The support as shown herein is circular in form. A gear d ismounted upon the shaft (Z and is adapted to transmit rotatory motion to the support (5. The gear (Z has a series of alternating deep and shallow notches (Z and (Z respectively. The notches d and (Z are spaced by the faces (Z formed on the gear. The stud 6 formed on the sleeve 1) is adapted to engage in the deep notches (Z and the lug 6 formed on the shaft 5 is adapted to engage in the shallow notches 6Z A stationary cam wheel E is mounted upon the frame A adjacent the support cl. The locking cam c is mounted upon the cam wheel E and has a ledge 6 having a cam face 6 eccentric to the shaft (Z and the support CZ. The forward or upper end 0 of the ledge formed on the locking cam is formed into a shoulder 6 extending away from the shaft (Z. The locking cam is adjustably secured upon the cam wheel E by any suitable means such as being bolted upon the cam wheel, the bolts 6 passing in the locking cam. A discharge spring e is mounted upon cam wheel E on the side opposite the locking cam on approximately the same level with the locking cam. A disc a is mounted on cam wheel E in alignment with the spring 0 and the shaft (Z. The purposes of these elements will be more fully explained hereafter. The outer edge or periphery of the cam wheel E has formed on it a way or track (2 that is engaged by the clamps H. At the top of the cam wheel E the track 6 extends away from the support (Z for a reason that will be explained hereafter.
n unlocking cam F is mounted upon cam wheel E adjacent to the spring 6 and has a lug f formed thereon. The upper or cam face 7" of the lug f is adapted to engage the clamps and to unlock them in a manner that will be explained hereafter. The lug 7 extends upwardly on. a line substantially tangential to the periphery of the cam wheel E.
A U-shaped bracket G is mounted upon the cam wheel E and has an arm 9 extending over the unlocking cam F. The bracket G is positioned intermediate the spring 6 and cam F. The forward branch 9 of the bracket G has extending from it, the guide arm 9 adapted to engage the forward or front side of the clamps as they pass by and to retain the clamps in engagement with the track c. It is at this place that the upper end of the track extends away from the support all. The branches of the U-shaped bracket are so disposed that part of the clamps will pass between them.
Each clamp H comprises a base it upon which is pivotally mounted one end of a bottom plate it, by means of pivot 71/. A transverse cam shaft 72 is mounted revolubly upon the base and has formed upon it a cam h adapted to engage the plate It and to adjustably retain the plate at a determinable inclination to base it. A bolt it extends reciprocally through the bores 72/ in the plate, It in the base 71, and (l in the support d. The bore 7L7 is countersunk as shown at [L and is adapted to accommodate a head It formed on one end of the bolt and which normally engages the plate 71.. A head it formed on the other end of the bolt is adapted to engage the disc 6*. A spring h mounted upon the bolt engages the head it and the support d, and yieldingly retains the head It in engagement with the plate It. Adjustable rods 11 are mounted upon the base 7L and extend upwardly from the base adjacent the free end of the plate it. These rods are connected. at their tops by bar it having a lip It under which the heel blanks are inserted as the heel block is built up. The lip retains the blanks upon one another until the clamp secures the heel block. The rods serve as an abutment for the forward ends of the heel blanks and also as a gage for the guidance of an employee in building up heel blocks. The cam shaft 71. has an apron 72. formed thereon adapted to lie upon the side of the base. The apron has a slot 72 concentric with the shaft 72 A bolt 7t extends thru the slot [L12 and engages in a threaded way formed in the base. The head of the bolt it is adapted to engage and lock or clamp the apron upon the base, whereby the cam shaft may be secured in an adjusted position. The base is secured upon the support 0? by any suitable means such as bolts it. A yoke 72. has its branches it and 71. pivotally mounted upon the ends of the base It by means of the adjustable bearings or pivots 72/ and 71 respectively. The pivots 72 and it engage in the bores it and it respectively in the base It. A bore 71 parallel with the branches it" and arms h and h.
' in the position shown as it extends thru the body it of the yoke and in this bore is slidably mounted a sleeve it having within it a threaded way in which an adjustable screw 77. engages. A top plate it is mounted upon th-elower end of the screw 72/ by means of a pivot h A. U-shaped clip I! is. removably mounted upon one end of the top plate h, extends slidably about the branch it and serves to prevent rotation of the top plate and the screw it. The lugs 7H formed on the yoke body It extend from the yoke body in a directionopposite to the branches 71." and 72.. The bore h in the yoke registers with the space between the lugs h A transverse slot h is formed in each lug, these slots registering with the space between the lugs and being in alignment with one another. A pin it is reciprocally mounted in the slots h and extends thru the arms h and it formed upon the upper 7 end of the sleeve h. A spring it is disposed about the upper end of the sleeve h and one end thereof is secured upon the pin 7 and the other end thereof abuts the yoke body it. A roller h is mounted upon the pin 71- intermediate the A shaft 71 is mounted upon the upper end of the lugs k and has rotatively mounted upon it, intermediate the lugs, a lever arm h. The lever arm has a cam face 7:. formed thereon, which face terminates at the shoulders 712' and it formed on the lever arm. The shoulders are adapted to engage the roller h and to thereby limit the movement of the lever arm.
A roller it is mounted upon the shaft h mounted on the free and bifurcated end of the lever arm. The shaft it extends beyond the lever arm as shown in Fig. 6, for a purpose which will be v explained hereafter. Lugs h and it are formed on the rear of the yoke body and have disposed between them a roller h revolubly mounted upon a shaft h extending thru the lugs 72k and it.
The operation of my device is as follows:
The operator takes his position upon the platform a and builds a rough block K upon the bottom plate h when a given clamp H is X, Fig. 1. In this position the yoke extends from the base in such direction that the branches assume a substantially horizontal position.
After the operator has built block K upon the clamp in position X, by placing glue on several leather blanks and mounting the blanks onone another, he operates the foot lever I), thereby disengaging the lug b and the rod 6 whereupon. the spring 5 causes the pin to engage in one of the slots 71 in the clutch shoe 7) The shaft 6 and the sleeve 1) are therefore rotatively actuated by the worm wheel 5. The stud 5 engages the gear 03 and moves same, see Fig.;1, in a counter clockwise direction. The mutilated end of the shaft 6 permits the faces d on the gear to pass the shaft Z), and when the next shallow notch registers with the shaft '5, the mutilated end or lug 5 enters in the shallow notch and secures the gear against further motion. During this time the clutch 7) has made one complete revolution and providing the operator has released the foot lever I), the rod 7) will engage the lug Z2 and thereby disengage the pin 5 from the clutch shoe 6. This movement of the gear is sufficient to advance the clamp shown at Y, Fig. 1, to the position X.
The roller it engages the track 6 on the cam wheel E, and as the clamps are moved towards the locking cam e, the yokes of the clamps are moved to positions so that the top plates 72 are disposed over and above the rough heel blocks this position the roller 71, on the lever arm 72, engages the shoulder 6 formed on the ledge e on th locking cam. As the roller passes over the locking; cam, the roller is moved towards the. shaft 03, whereby the cam face it on the lever arm 723" is moved over the roller 72, mounted on the sleeve 71 thereby causing the top plate h to be moved upon and clamped upon the rough heel block K, and tensioning spring it. When the roller 7L engages the shoulder h the lever arm is locked upon the yoke. The heel block is retained under pressure in this clamped position until the clamp has moved to a position wherein the shaft h engages the unlocking cam F. The rough shoe block is gradually released from the pressure exerted thereon by the clamp when the shaft h engages the cam face f which serves to move the roller it away from the shaft (Z, whereupon the roller engages the arm 9, nounted on bracket G. The arm g is so formed that the roller is gradually extended. The spring it retains the roller in engagement with the arm g, wherefore the pressure on the heel block is gradually decreased. By the time that the clamp reaches the position Z, the lever arm has been fully extended and the heel block is ready to be discharged from the clamp. At this time the head 72F of the bolt 72: engages the disc 6 and the head h thereof is projected from the bore in the bottom plate h, and unseats the block K from the bottom plate It. At approximately this time the spring 6 engages the rear of the blocleK, and between the spring 6 and the bolt h, the block K is ejected forwardly from the clamp and falls into a suitable container provided therefor. At about this time-the guide arm g engages the forward lug h formed on the yoke and serves to retain the roller if? on the yoke track 6 which at this place extends rearwardly from the support rZ, wherefore the yoke and the branches move about pivots h and If, whereupon the yoke is moved by gravity to such a posi- K. "When in tion that the branches are in a substantially horizontal position, whereupon the operator can build up another heel upon the empty clamp.
The adjustable rods it serve as a gage or guide whereby the operator can determine the height to which he should build up a heel block. A. suitable stand A is constructed above the support (Z and upon which the heel blanks or lifts may be disposed. The heel lifts are glued at the time that they are placed upon the bottom plate It by the operator, and when they are discharged they have dried. The lip h on' the bar it mounted on the gage rods serves as a retaining means under which the heel blanks are retained until the top plate clamps the heel block. A check it may be mounted adjustably upon the base a so that it will extend over the bottom plate and serves as an abutment for the lowermost heel blank to prevent slippage or movement of the lowermost heel blank while the heel block is being built up.
The knock out mechanism M disclosed in Fig. may be employed to supersede the spring 6* and perform the function thereof. The mechanism comprises a rod m pivotally mounted intermediate its ends upon the frame A by IllQZlIlSOTE a pivot on, the rod having an angular face m on one end adapted to be engaged by the block m mounted on the clutch b and to be moved thereby against the yielding resistance of spring m mounted at one end on frame A and at its other end upon the rod m. A reciprocating arm m is pivotally mounted at one of its ends upon the other end of the rod and extends intermediate its ends thru the frame A at approximately the place where the spring 6* is mounted (see Fig. 1). A head m is mounted on the free end of the arm and is adapted to be moved into engagement with a heel block K when a clamp assumes the position Z, thereby ejecting the heel block from the clamp. The arm m extends reciprocally through a sleeve m mounted on the frame, the sleeve serving as a stop determining the forward limit to which the head m may be moved. This limit is such that the head wa will not interfere with the movement of clamps.
