Description
June 3, 1924. IAQGASS N. M O. NEAL ET AL PICKER CAM Filed July 25, 1922 Patented June 3, I924.
NEWTON MCCAIN NEAL AND GEORGE WALTER DAVIS, 01? NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE.
rIoKEn CAM.
Application filed July 25, 1922.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, NEWTON MCCAIN N EAL and Greece IVALTER DAVIS, citizens of the United States, and residents of Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picker Cams, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cams especially adapted for use on looms.
The picking cams for looms are subjected to extremely hard usage and it is frequently necessary to remove the same from their shafts for repairing or replacement and this operation is very time consuming and consequently expensive. It is therefore an important object of this invention to provide a cam of the character specified having novel means whereby the cam may be attached or removed in a highly expeditious manner and without the exercise of unusual skill.
A further object is to provide a cam of the character specified which is of highlv simplified construction, durable in use and cheap to manufacture Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
igure 1 is a side elevation of the improved cam assembled,
Figure 2 is a group view of the cam, the parts being shown in elevation.
In the crawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodi ment of the invention the numeral 5 designates the body of the cam which as illustrated in Figure 1 is provided with a centrally arranged opening 6 for the reception of the drive shaft. The cam is provided on its periphery with the usual contact mem her 7 in the nature of a rim or rib.
In order to facilitate the removal of the cam we have provided the same with a detachable segment 10 the edges of which Serial No. 577,315.
flatly abut the edges of the body so that an extremely durable connection is provided. In carrying out the invention the edges of the detachable segment 10 are provided with arcuate ears 11 which flatly abut the body of the cam and are secured thereto by means of bolts 12 and nuts 13. It will be observed that the ears 11 are formed with arcuate slots 1% for the reception of the bolts 12.
\Vhen it is desired to remove the cam from the shaft it is merely necessary to remove the bolts 12 from the slots 14 and from the arcuate slots 16 in the inner portion of the body. When the bolts 12, of which there are two, have thus been removed the cam may be detached from the shaft by an edgewise movement. It is understood, of course. that the segmental sections 10 are first detached. When the cam has thus been removed from the shaft the desired replacement may be quickly made. It will be seen that a substantial saving of time and money will be brought about by the employment of this cam as more than an hour is saved at each change of the cam.
It is to be understood that the form of the invention herewith shown is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that such minor changes in arrangement and construction of parts may be made as will remain within the spirit of the invention and the scope of what is claimed.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is A cam for looms comprising a body having a detachable segmental section, the edges of which flatly abut the adjacent edges of the body, arcuate ears formed integral with said segmental section and flatly contacting with one side of said body, said body and said arcuate ears being formed with arcuate slots adapted for registration. and fastening'bolts extending through said registering slots whereby to secure the ears flatly in engagement with the body and to ecure the segmental sections in position.
