Be it known that I, GEORGE A. BOUVIER, a
, citizen of the United States, and resident of Detroit, Wayne County, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Connecting Rods, of which the following is a specification.
This invention Y relates to hydrocarbon motors and particularly to connecting rods therefor.
The salient object of the invention is to produce a light and extremely strong connecting rod.
Another object of the invention is to produce a-practical connecting rod of stamped steel or built up construction.
A further object of the invention is to produce a stamped steel connecting rod provided with a reinforcement whereby the load is transmitted between the bushing at the large end and the bushing at the small end without putting any strain on the` weaker portions of therod.

Referring to the drawings, the connects ing rod 10 is shown as comprising two principal body parts, 11 and 12, the part 12 having practically its entire edge 13 folded over the edge 14 of the part 11. This folding over operation is done under considerable ressure or by hammering so that it securely iiinds the two parts of the connecting rod together.
The long rod portions of the parts 11 and 12 are channel shaped as shown in Fig. 4 being bowed outwardly in transverse section along the center line so that this middle part 1917. serial No. 169,263.

At both ends of the rod the stamped steel body parts 11 and 12 are formed with lateral y extending integral'hollow bosses 15 and 16, the bossesl being at the small end of the rod and the bosses 16 at the large end thereof. It willlbe understoodthat these bosses are preferably punched or otherwise formed in the parts 11 and 12 beforethese parts are secured together by folding over the edges. Y
The principal members 11 and 12 are reinforced to some extent by their interlocked edge" portions, but in order to provide reinforcement of ample degree to sustain the working thrusts so as to Guard against buckling a reinforcing plate 1( is provided. This plate is arranged between the members 11 and 12, andk forms an internal web.Y The edge 18 of this plate rests against and follows the line of the edge 14 of the bodypart 11. The edge 13 of the body part 12therefore encloses the edge 18 as well as the edge 14 (see Figs. 2 and 4). '-At the small end 'i of the connecting rod the piece 17 is provided with ahole 19 between the bosses 15 and of the same size as the openings therein. The reinforcing piece terminates at the large end of the connecting rod adjacent the bosses 16 and the edge of that piece is curved as at 20 to correspond to the curvature of such bosses.
A bushing 21 is arranged in the bosses 16 to receive the crankshaft and a second bushing 22 is provided in the bosses 15 to receive the piston pin. The curved edge 20V of the piece 17 being shaped to contact with the bushing 21 as shown in Fig. 5, receives a large part of the load and transfers it to the bushing 22 which fits snugly in the hole 19. Thus while the bushings pass through the bosses of the body parts in the usual manner the greater part of the load is carried between the bushings by the reinforcing piece 17.
At the large end of the connecting rod the parts 11 and 12 are formed with hollow lugs 23 and 24 respectively at the sides of the bosses 16. These lugs are interlocked or folded together the lugs 23 being enclosed by the lugs 24.
It will be understood that when the connecting rod is completed as shown in Fig. 1
the lower end is sawed along the line 3 3 thus severing the cap 25 from the main section of the rod. The bushing 21 which is usually flanged as shown in Fig. 7 may then be positioned in the bosses 16 and clamped therein by bolts or other means passed through the combined lugs 23 and 24.
Fig. 7 shows another embodiment of the invention wherein a portion of the body parts ll and l2 is employed to carry the load. In this form of rod two reinforcing pieces 26` and 27 are substituted for the single reinforcing piece 17. The piece 26 has the same outline as the large end of the piece 17k and: besides being clamped by the edge 13 is weldedv along the line 28 to the edgesl and le of both body parts. The piece 27 in the same way corresponds to the small end of the piece 17 andl is similarly welded to the body parts l1 and l2 along the line 29.
s The load' therefore between the bushings 2l and 22 is transmitted in a large part by the reinforcing piece 267 body parts ll and l2 and reinforcing piece 27, avoiding the weak portions of the body parts around the bosses 15, and 16.
YTwo embodiments only of the invention have been shown and described but it is obvious that others could be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as set forth in the annexed claims.

A connecting rod comprising two bushings arranged apart from each other'7 a flat member arranged between and in contact with said bushings to transmit thrust from one of the bushings to the other, and a pressed steel shell formed to enclose said bushings and clamp said member and to keep them in cooperative relation.
et. A stamped steel connecting rod having a crank shaft receiving bushing at one end and a piston pin receiving bushing at the other end anda fiat reinforcing web clamped in position within said connecting rod and contacting with both said bushings to transmit motion directly therebetween.
