Description

NI ED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAC O. ANDREWS AND AMZI S; DODD, OF NEW'YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNORS TO HOME FIRE-EXTINGUISHER COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN FlRE-EXTINGUISHERS- Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,629, dated April 14, 1874; application filed January 31, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ISAAC O. ANDREWS and AMZI S. DODD, of the city, county, and
State of New York, have invented a new and of the apparatus, taken through the line .00 m,
Fig. 1. 7
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Our invention has for its object to improve the construction of fire-extinguishers in such a way that the acid-vessel may be securely held and readily and surely disengaged to discharge the acid, which cannot be tampered with without indicating it, which will give warning should any one attempt to remove the head while the apparatus is under pressure, and which shall be light and at the same time. strong.
The invention'will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.
A is the alkali-vessel of the apparatus, the body of which is made of light sheet-copper or other suitable material, securely riveted or otherwise fastened together. The body of the alkali-vessel A is closely wound with wire a, securely soldered together and to the said vessel. This construction gives the strength necessary to resist the outward pressure of the gas generated when the acid is discharged into the alkali, and at the same time enables the Vessel to be made tight. In the mouth of the alkali-vessel A is placed a screw-collar, ta which is made with a shoulder or .fiange upon its inner end, to rest against the inner surface of the breast of the vessel A, and
which is securely soldered to said breast.
This construction also greatly strengthens the alkali-vessel against outward pressure. B is the top, cover, or head, which is provided with handles 1), in the ordinary manner, and which screws into the screw-collar a of the alkalivessel A. G is the inner or acid vessel, the bottom of. which has a transverse V-groove formed in it, which receives the V-shaped bottom bar d of the bow or U-bar D. To one side of the acid-vessel O, at or near its bottom, is secured one end of a short chain, E, the other end of which is secured to the bottom bar 61 of the bow D. To the center of the bottom bar 61 of the bow D is attached, or upon it is formed, a rounded projection or knob, F, which enters a concavity or recess in the'bottom of the acid-vessel O. This construction enables the acid-vessel C to be readily adjusted in place, and also enables it to tip readily when the stopper is withdrawn. The how 1) is strengthened at or near the upper end "of the acid-vessel O by a ring-bar, d", as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, so that the bow D cannot spring while being operated. The arms of the bow D pass up through stuffing-boxes in the head B, and their upper ends pass through sockets in the ends of the frame or plate G, which is secured adjustably in place by nuts d screwed upon said arms above and below the said frame G. To the upper side of the head B is secured a vertical standard, H, which is slotted longitudinally and in line with the arms ofthe bow D, so that the frame Gr may pass through and move up and down in the said slot. In the frame G is formed a slot or opening, to receive an eccentric, I, which is pivoted to the slotted standard H, in which it works by a pin, to which it is rigidly attached, and to the ends of which, upon the outer sides of the slotted standard H, are rigidly attached the ends of the arms of the slotted lever J, so that the said eccentric I can be operated, by operating the said lever J, to lower and raise the bow D, as required. The mouth of the acid-vessel O is closed with a stopper, K, the body of which may be made of any suitable material, but the lower end or point of which should be made of metal or other hard substance, for the purpose hereinafter set forth. The stopper K is attached to the center of a spring bar or plate, L, the ends of which are secured to the head B. The spring L prevents the acid-vessel G from being broken when forcing the stopper K into place, and when handling the apparatus, and also allows the apparatus to accommodate itself to in g the acid.
variations of temperature without loosening the said stopper K. The mouth of the acidvessel 0 is rabbeted, countersunk, or beveled to form a shoulder, 0, to receive a glass or other plate, M, which is cemented or otherwise secured into place, and which is broken by the hard point of the stopper K, as the said stopper is forced into place. This allows the acid-vessel C to be conveniently put into the machine without any danger of spill- It also allows a number of the acid-vessels to be kept filled and ready for use, so that the empty ones can be readily removed and replaced with filled ones, as required, and enables the empty vessels to be refilled when their contents have been used. The lever J may be locked, holding the stopper K in place by a spring key or pin, N, which is passed through a hole in the said lever J and upper end of the slotted standard H. The springkey N should be attached to the end of a short chain, O, the other end of which should be attached to the head B, or to some other convenient part of the apparatus. P is a small eccentric plate pivoted to the lower part of the slotted standard H, and which has one or more holes through it, corresponding with holes through the said slotted standard, to receive a small pin or pins, Q, to act as a seal, so that, should the lever J be operated to withdraw the stopperK,-the said pin or pins Qmay be broken off by the eccentric I, and the plate 1? allowed to drop, thus calling attention to the fact that the apparatus should be examined. For conveniencein putting in the acid-vessel, a curved bar, It, may be attached to the arms of the bow D, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. When the bar or plate R is used, the screw-threads upon the collar a and head B must be so arranged that the said bar or plate shall be upon the side of the apparatus opposite to that to which the carrying-straps are attached, so that the acid-vessel, when the apparatus is carried, will always incline toward the operator, and from the bar or plate It. By this means the acidvessel 0 will always fall when the stopper K is withdrawn. S are chains, the upper ends of which are attached to the end of the lever J, and which pass through holes in the ends of the handles 1), so that the operator, while having the apparatus upon his back, by pulling upon one or the other of the chains S, can withdraw the stopperKand discharge the acid. The bow D has toes or shoulders (1 formed upon its arms, in such positions that when the said bow is forced down by operating the le' ver J the said toes or shoulders (1 may strike against the breast of the acid-vessel G and force it ofi the stopper K. Across the screwthreads of the collar 01. or of the head B, or of both, is formed a groove, T, as shown in Fig.
such a form as maybe most convenient for the attachment of the hose or other connections.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The frame G, eccentric I, and lever J, in combination with the standard H, head B, and bow D, for removing the stopper K from the acid-vessel G substantially as herein shown and describe 2. The knob or projection F, in combination with the base-bar d of the bow D, and with the recessed bottom of the acid-vessel 0, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. The combination of the spring L with the stopper K of the acid -vessel 0, and with the head B, substantially as herein shown and described.
' 4.. An alkali-vessel provided with head B and collar at, having the notches T across the screwthreads of one or the other, as and for the purpose specified.
5. The combination of a frangible plate, M, and a downwardly-projecting conical stopper, K, of an acid-vessel having a'conical or shouldered neck, as and for the purpose set forth.
6. The seal formed of the perforated eccentric plate I? and pin or pins Q, in combination with the slotted standard H, substantially as herein shown and described.
7. The chains S, in combination with the lever J and handles b of the head B, substantially as herein shown and described.
