UNITED JOSEPH MAX YOUNG, or .oRooKsTon, ammsomr ocoUPAn'r-PnorELLEi) CHILDS WAGON.
Application filed April 27, 1923. Serial No. 634,937.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH M. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Crookston, in the county of Polk and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Occupant-Pro pelled Childrens Wagons, of which the following is a specification.
In carrying out the present invention it is my purpose to provide a toy wagon that is provided with a highly improved and simplified form of occupant controlled propulsion means.
A further purpose of the invention is the provision of such a wagon that is comparatively simple of construction and onethat will at the same time embrace the desired features of efficiency and durability and that may be manufactured and marketed at.
considerable lesser expense than similar wagons with which I am now familiar.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detailed description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as claimed. I
In the drawings forming part of this application, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved device.
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Figure 3 is a detail cross section taken substantially upon the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a sectional view upon the line H of Figure 1, and 7 Figure 5 is another section taken substantially upon the line 55 of Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a front elevational view of part of the wagon.
Referring to the drawings in detail, my improved wagon comprises a floor board 5 supported at its rear end by wheels 6 upon the ends of a stationary axle 7 that is carried by one end of a desirable form of bolster 8. Upon the front end of the floor board 5 is a swivel bolster 9 that carries a cross axle 10 upon which are steering wheels 11, it being noted from a consideration of Figure 2 that the front end of the said floor board 5 is of a lesser width than the remaining portion for permiting the said axle 10 to extend outwardly of the sides thereof re= ceiving the feet of the operator whereby the steering of the wagon is controlled.
Upon the board 5 adjacent the rear end is a wagon box 12 equipped at its front end with a drivers seat 13.
Pivotallysupported between upwardly directed plates 14 upon opposite sides of the floor board 5 and adjacent the front end thereof is one end of a hand lever 15, the upper end of which is equipped with a cross handle 16. Pivoted to said lever 15 at 17 and adjacent to its pivotal connection is a propulsion bar 18 that extends rearwardly and downwardly through a slot 19 in the board 5.
Pendent from the board 5 and at the rear end of said slot 19 is a pair of channel members 20 at opposite sides of said slot, the lower ends of the same being provided with inturned flanges 21. Slidable between said channel members 20 are rollers 22 journaled at their opposite ends within plates 23 which plates are provided with inturned flanges 24 at their upper and lower ends and impinging upon which are the ends of the upper and lower pairs of expansion springs 25. The bar 18 extends between said rollers 22 and is equipped at one end with a metallic pronged head 26 which through the medium of the springs within said channel members is normally maintained in engagement with the ground surface.
In View of the above description it will at once be apparent that when the lever 15 is swung in the direction of the arrows, Figure 1, the bar 18 will be consequently moved forwardly and rearwardly relatively to the floor board 5, the rearward movement of this bar causing the biting of the pronged head 26 into the surface of the ground for consequently propelling the vehicle.
Although I have herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Pattent, is
In a wagon of the class described, a wheel supported base board, a seat upon said board, a hand lever pivoted adjacent the I front end of said board, a bar pivotally secured to said hand lever and extending downwardly and rearwardly within a slot in said board, a pair of channel members pendent from the board and at the rear end of said slot, 2. pair, of spaced rollers'slidable within said channel members, springs Within said channel members at opposite sides ofsaid rollers, said bar adapted for engagement between said rollers whereby the same 1 is normally maintained in engagement at one end with the ground surface.
In-testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
JOSEPH MAX YOUNG.
